Miles and Steps

Wednesday, August 04, 2010

This morning I walked 4.12 miles in the a.m., and kept track of the remaining steps for the remainder of the day. For the whole day my miles were 6.34 and the total steps were 12,543
I really feel good about the exercise I am getting with my walking. It is good cardio and helps build strong bones and muscles. I never liked to walk before, but I like the results so I do it. It goes by pretty fast having a walking buddy.

Walking

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

This morning I went for my walk at 7:00. The breeze was blowing and I thought, Aw, the perfect day. My walking buddy and I walked 4.12 miles and by the time we got back we were both soaked and wondering what happened to that wonderful breeze. We hadn't given up.....we just kept moving forward and we made it. I have kept my tracker on to keep track of my steps for the whole day. That adds quite a bit more. I also worked in the garden for 60 minutes and did a few strength exercises. I have been really good today. Drinking my water too. That is really important.

I think it is indecent for anyone to have to rise before noon on any given day. Civilized mortals do NOT do that but look at all the time I waste each day just by sleeping. But when all of you are sleeping at night, I am writing or reading and listening to the crickets and loving the quiet.

Bear Tales

Monday, August 02, 2010

This past weekend, my husband and I went to his hunt camp for the weekend. We decided to take a walk in the many acres of forest. As we were walking, he said,"You know we might see a bear, right?". I said yes and asked if he had heard about the lady in Wyoming and the bear in her tent. As I said that, He said "Stop, a BEAR." I said yea right. He said, No, look right in front of you. About 30 yards in front was a bear coming up the hill and then another and then another. A Mama and her two cubs. Not good. A Mama bear will protect those cubs at any one's cost. I said, We can't run because a bear runs about 30 mph. Let's turn and walk slowly in the direction we came from. We were about 1/2 mile from the truck. Larry kept looking back and I said can you still see them? He said they were right behind us coming in our direction. I couldn't look because I knew I would run. I said if they get much closer we should fall to the ground in a fetal position and play dead. He looked another couple of times and they weren't to be seen. We were still about 200 yds away from the truck. I asked him to open the doors with the remote as soon as we were close enough. When we got to the truck and got in, my heart was pounding so hard you could almost see it through my shirt. We were so lucky they didn't come after us. When I asked Larry if he had been scared, he said when he looked back and saw them coming right behind us, that he just knew we were in deep trouble. As we went up the road in the truck we looked to the cleared power lines (about 1/2 mile away) and the bears were going up that path. The Mama was in front and the cubs were hopping behind her. They were so young they were not able to run yet....just hop. We took a picture but it was so far away and all you can see are a big black dot and two little dots. I am so thankful I am here to tell this story.

I would have peed my pants! Bears are scary. I had a run in with a bobcat that decided to lay in the shade of my Lindon tree while I hung out laundry. I turned around to go in the house and saw that huge paw hanging down from one of the branches. I called the police and the Humane Society and they sent TWO GIRLS to see what they could do. The poor bobcat was just tired and needed some rest and water. Everyone was there waiting to grab him and I told them to wait and I got a big bucket of cold water and backed away. In no time, he just jumped down, drank his fill and they put a loop around his neck and walked him to the back of the carry vehicle. He was so gentle he just jumped right up into the c crate and laid down. Lord he was beautiful! But a bear would scare the caca out of me.

I have this thing about bears. I am always running into them. I have had close encounters with Black, Grizzly and a Polar Bear. It is always a bit nerve racking to say the least. The Grizzly encounter also included a cub and like you said momma bears don't like anybody by their cubs.

Glad you made out OK.

Weekend

Thursday, July 29, 2010

We are packing up to go to WV to visit with friends that we have known for almost 40 years. They have a motel and we will be staying there. Part of the time, my honey will be a half hour further up the road at his hunting camp. They are having a work weekend and all of the guys are going to get some maintenance done. The hunt camp has a brand new house, just built less than a year ago. The old house (which was torn down) was over 60 years old and just made of cinder blocks and no insulation. The new house has 3 big bunk rooms,
2 1/2 baths, all the modern appliances in kitchen, a big eating area, living room, and a laundry room. There is a porch all across the whole front of the house for sitting and relaxing and a nice sized deck on the back with a grill. So different from before. The new house is so nice that this summer, the guys are taking their families there to get away for quiet weekends. The other house was so old and musty that the families wouldn't go. lol..lol... Hope all of you will have a great weekend. Nancy
P.S. The weather there this weekend will be 70's in the day time and 50's at night. A big relief from all of the sweltering temps here.

It's Raining again

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The storm we got Sunday night left us almost and inch of rain in about 45 minutes. It is raining here this morning and we got about 1/2 inch in less than an hour. I was going to walk at 6:30, but it is still raining. BUT if it is still raining at 7:00 I am going anyway. Neither my walking buddy nor I mind walking in the rain. We will go as long as it is not STORMING. The temp really isn't much better than before the rain, but we will have a little precipitation to keep us a little cooler while doing our walk. Good way to start the day.
