Starting again

Sunday, October 27, 2013

I am at 180 - down 3 from all time high. Going to follow Spark Diet suggestions. Especially challenged because I've been dealing with arthritis in left knee and a couple of weeks ago I injured my right foot in a fall. These challenges are also incentives as I know losing weight will help ease the discomfort I am now experiencing when walking. Re-set my starting weight and have made my goal to weigh 5 lbs less by late November. Should be do-able. That will be my strategy - short, achievable goals.

Nancy - WELCOME BACK! Glad to see you again. I love your goal for November. You can do this. It is tough dealing with arthritis and injuries on top of everything else.

Focusing more on your diet (as in what you are eating, not a specific type of diet) now is a great idea. Perhaps you can do some upper body conditioning or seated exercises while the lower body heals if you want to keep moving during this time. It can be done.

Have fun! FEEL BETTER!

Have you tried water aerobics or just swimming? They are very doable with your situation.

Yes, losing weight, cutting back on salt and animal fat, eating more fruits and veggies, drinking your water, exercise and plenty of sleep will make you feel incredible and get your weight in the healthy range.

Go slow one step at a time. You aren't in a race.

    Hi Nancy,

Welcome back! I have thought of you often over the months.

I'm glad to hear you are going to follow the Spark diet. I'm just convinced that the weird things (calorie cycling, paleo, fasting, etc. etc. etc) just don't work long term. My personal opinion.

It might be a good strategy for you to concentrate on your diet while your foot heals.

My weight loss has never been more than 5 pounds a month; that's just what it is at this stage of my life *sigh*. I know you aren't happy with your weight being up, but you are in the right place and I for one am happy to root you on as you work to whittle off the pounds.

Have been doing pretty well but eating has been off the charts. Going to start the new fasting diet tomorrow. Fast two days a week (500 calories on fasting days). I hope this will be a good plan for me - I despise planning ahead and would rather not think about what I'm going to eat. This way, I don't eat so nothing to think about except which days - Thursdays and Mondays for me.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks Travelgrll, Vandal and Cindi for checking on me. Alive and okay.

Glad you hear from you. A lot of us have struggled recently but the good news is that "recently" is DONE - gone and we start from where we are right now!

I have a few more pounds to lose than you do but if we work together we'll both get there!

You stay focused and confident in yourself!!

Dr. Mercola recommends fasting days on his web site. He says that in olden times we didn't eat everyday since there wasn't food always available. It rests the body not to eat.

Summer has flown by. My daughters head back to school this week - the older one tomorrow, the baby on Sunday. I still have much to do to get settled in my new house...hope that not having to work around the kids I'll make more progress.
Started new job last Wednesday only to learn the Federal Grant does not go into effect until September so I only worked half a day and went home. That's okay though - I really wanted to have the summer off to spend with the girls.
We went to Cape May for a long weekend. Just got home today.
Haven't been cooking - again, I'm hoping when I'm home alone, I'll develop a good routine. Would like to make a big pot of soup and have soup and salad for dinners. Smoothie or oatmeal for breakfast - lunch?
When the job starts - whenever weather permits, plan to walk to train (a little over half a mile) and then it's a little under a mile and a half to my office. Round trip that will be four miles a day. I will start posting weigh-ins every Friday after I start work.
Shout out to Travelgrll for posting photos! You are doing so great! I'm as happy as could be for you and your success.
Thanks to Vandal and others who have checked up on me the past few months. I'm okay.

Happy to hear from you!! Travelgrrl really is kicking some serious @ss isn't she?? I really need to step up my game.

Sounds like you have things going your way and I hope this new job works out for you. I also hope you have some nice neighbors that you can get acquainted with. Seems like that's something lost in California at least - no one goes to meet the new neighbors.

Oh well - hope you can continue to blog on a regular basis and that we both get our acts together so Travelgrrl doesn't get to gloat forever!!

Take care!!

    Hi Nancy,

Hey, thanks for the shout-out! When you asked me to post pictures I knew it was time. It seems strange but I found it strangely liberating. I feel like I am more accountable now that I'm not just some random picture -- I'm a real person!! LOL

It is so great to hear from you! I'm sure having your daughters home for the summer was a huge blessing to both you and them. A weekend at Cape May -- what wonderful memories to send them back to school with.

I am guessing that you will carve a new routine for yourself once your daughters are back in class. Routine and consistency are important and I know you'll find what works for you. I love, love LOVE the idea of getting in a 4-mile walk each day! And fairly painlessly too! You New Yorkers know how to do it.

Can't wait to have you start blogging regularly. Take care of yourself. emoticon emoticon

Dear Spark Friends,
Life goes on although it doesn't seem like it should. It is difficult to write about my life without crying. I sold my house and have moved into a small rental. I will start a new job in July. My children are all home for the summer. I have had so much support from my friends and family - I never imagined people could be so kind and caring. I have started walking for exercise again and trying to get control over my diet. Still unsettled in the new house - first time in my life going from larger to smaller living space and not very much storage in the new house. A friend told me about a new gadget - Fitbit - and I'm using that to get motivated to exercise. Thanks to Vandal, Travelgrll, Cyndi and others who have checked in on me -

Hey my friend. just updated myself a bit. Glad that you managed to sell your house and get a new job. Sorry that life is so difficult right now.

My life is still in a holding pattern, as Steve's condition slow deteriorates. he has actually done quite well, for someone with metastatic pancreatic cancer, but of course there is no fooling one's self about the ultimate outcome.

I have decided to make an effort to come back to Spark. I have gained back to my high weight, plus five pounds. I know that at some point I will be trying to take care of him, and I just can't continue to gain. I have really noticed health wise.

Will not lead a team. Just find a couple to be a "member" of. And hopefully see some blog posts from my Spark friends.

Hi Nancy - thanks for the blog. I (we) really missed you and have been thinking about you a lot.

Congrats on the job that should help. The rest just takes time. You have some great memories to call on.

Glad your family is there to help although sometimes that can even get to be a bit much!!

Take care and keep exercising.

Oh - one more thing. Tell me more about that FitBit - how it works and if you are finding it helpful. I've got to get something that helps me do a better job of measuring what I'm doing.

Nancy I'm so glad to see you back and get an update. I know this time must have been very trying for you with all that's happened this year. I'm glad you will have your kids around for support for awhile.

Congratulations on the new job! WOOHOO! That is great news.

I hope the fitbit helps you to find the courage, enthusiasm and will to start walking/exercising again. I know from experience that exercise does help ease some of the pain (go endorphins).

Please don't stay away so long this time. I've really missed your blogs and updates. Hope you have a great day and summer!

Oh Nancy, I am so happy to hear from you! You have never been far from my thoughts or prayers.

You've had so much change this year; what a comfort to have all your children home.

I'm glad to hear you are walking again; it's a great metaphor for life, isn't it? All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Life update.

Sunday, April 01, 2012

Sadly, my husband died of a stroke in January. He was only 57 years old. He had been taking medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol for years but he smoked and had heart disease in his family history.

This has been devastating for me and my children.

My husband had started a new job in California. I remained in New York because we had been trying to sell the house since last April. We took it off the market for the holidays. In late February/early March, I put the house back on the market and it sold the first day. Closing is scheduled for early June. So, you can see, I have a lot going on.

To all of you who shared encouraging words over the past couple of years, thank you.

I still need to take care my health and lose weight but too overwhelmed to deal with that now.

    Hi Nancy,

I have thought of you often over the months and appreciate the update. I'm glad the house sold because I know that's been a burden.

Agree with Cindi; we'll be here for you when you are ready!

Hugs, good thoughts and prayers being sent your way...

I've walked in your shoes too Nancy. I lost the love of my life 6 years ago and he was only 55 yrs old. Not only do we lose our soul mates, our futures as we knew them just vanish and all you are left with is wondering how to fill the void. Nothing can. Time does help some. I'm here for you if you ever want to write me a spark email and just cry on your keyboard. I am a good listener and I know what you are dealing with. Many, many hugs to you.

It hurts every day.
Sometimes it only hurts a little.
Sometimes it hurts a lot.
But it still hurts every day."
