To the New Year of 2009

Thursday, January 01, 2009

While I do not do the New Year’s Resolutions I am setting some new goals to help me keep the momentum of the last six weeks. I know that 2009 is the year I can and will get rid of the excess weight and take the necessary steps to become a more health and fit person. My goal is not just to lose weight but to change my health status. One of my main goals this year is to do the 110 mile bike ride during the month of August that completes a loop around the Utah Lake. Several of my goals that I am setting will assist me in meeting the goal of the 110 bike ride.

emoticonMy weight goal is to take my over all weight loses in small steps of 5% at a time. Since last March I have reached my 5% goal of 15 pounds and currently working towards my 10% goal of 30 pounds. Then when I reached my 10% goal I will re-evaluate my next goal. I am looking to meet my 10% goal by the 28 of February.

emoticonMy Nutrition goals are to make healthier choices.

I will continue to ensure that I get at least three fruits and three vegetables a day, working up to eight a day. emoticon emoticon

Eat more whole grains by changing from regular pasta and rice to whole wheat pasta and brown rice. emoticon

The one part of my diet I currently struggle with is getting the correct amount of lean protein, this is the one area that I will take steps to work on over the next several weeks until I determine the best way for me to meet my daily requirements. > emoticon

I will continue to ensure that I drink a minimum of 6 glasses of water. emoticon

emoticonMy physical goals are to become more active on a daily bases
Get up from my desk when at work and complete a fifteen minute walk at least twice during my eight hour shift. emoticon
Do 30 minutes on the spinning bike three times a week. emoticon
Do 30 minutes on the treadmill two times a week. emoticon
Add yoga and stretching to my daily routine to become more flexible. emoticon

I look forward to meeting my goals and adding new ones as I continue my journey to a more healthy and fit lifestyle.

August 31 Updated Log

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Well it has been several week since I updated my blog. A lot of things have happened over the last several weeks. If you have read my previous blogs you will know that I was scheduled to complete a 67 mile bike ride on August 9. I did complete all 67 miles it took me at total of six hours of those 4.5 hours of actual riding but was gone a total of 6.5 hours with rest stops. I am looking to complete the 110 mile bike ride next year. So I need to start the training process now. So my goals going forward will assist me in building the endurance, strength and stamina to complete the 110 miles next August.
Between now and next August I will complete several short organized bike rides besides weekly rides on my road or spinning bike.
Now for my September Goals:
1. Keep a daily food log.
2. Eat six fruits and Vegetables a day.
3. Drink at least 8 glasses of water.
4. Be in bed by 10:30 each night to so to arise by 5:00 am each morning to allow time for daily exercise.
5. Do a weekly blog to update my progress on meeting my goals
6. Keep a personal journal of my feelings.

Until next week I hope everyone a great week and that you take the necessary steps to accomplish your personal goals. Because together we are stronger.

Kris

Goal Update

Monday, July 21, 2008

Today is July 20; this blog is to update progress on meeting my goals for the summer. This is a follow up for week ending July 12th and 20th. My overall goal is to take steps that will allow me to live a healthy and fit lifestyle. With that said my goal this summer is to lose 15 pounds by September 1. The following are the steps that I will be taking to make this happen.

• Complete three cardio workouts where my heart rate is in the 80% zone. (I hope the majority of the time these workouts will be on my bike).
emoticon Well over the last two weeks I completed 5 workouts via the bike two were 25 mile bike rides. They challenged my weakness on the bike which is climbing hills. The new route that we have been riding over the last two weeks has been a variety of terrain.
• Complete three cardio workouts where my heart rate is between 65% and 80%.
emoticonI have gotten on the spinning bike for exercise once or twice when we did not go biking. But I would say the majority of my cardio outside of the rides on the bike have been yard work. This year to save gas we purchased hand push mower (no motor) I can mow the front lawn in 30 minutes. But it usually takes about an hour because I mow over the same line twice.

• Eat within my calorie range for 6 of the seven days. Including 4 vegetables and 2 fruits a day.
emoticonI have been doing great at staying within my calories for the six days. What I have struggled with over the last couple of days is getting in the fruits. But we picked up some peaches to add a new choice in the fruit. That means that some of the choices may not be the best.

• Do a weekly blog on my accomplishments for the week.
emoticonI am doing great for July 20 but missed for July 12. But I am back on track for this goal and making a point in keep on track for the rest of the summer.

• Keep a daily journal.
emoticonSo far I have not manage to get this one going.

The main reasons for wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle are to move me towards a life that will be filled with physical activities as well as traveling.

1. To be in physical shape that will allow me to travel in comfort both in a car and on airplane for long distances.
2. To be more comfortable with myself in crowds and not be subconscious, with myself due to my weight.
3. To no longer be considered very obese.
4. To allow me to feel more comfortable in my clothes.
5. Improve my biking skills so that I can keep up with my friends, so I do not have to hold them back from getting a good workout.
6. To complete a century ride on my bike with out it taking 8 hours.
7. To decrease my health risk associated with obesity.

My friends want me to do a fifty mile bike ride on August 9th. But after review the ride that we are planning to ride it turns out that it will be 66 miles. I have not yet decided if I am going to do the fifty (66) or maybe I will do the 33 mile ride. But I will let you know on August 10 in my weekly blog.

Update on my Goals

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Today is July 9; this blog is to update progress on meeting my goals for the summer. This is a follow up for week ending July 5.

(I hope the majority of the time these workouts will be on my bike).
emoticon Only got out side riding one time this week due to schedules and heat. But I did get on the spinner bike once this week as well. But I did some heavy duty cleaning and yard work. So why I did not make it on my bike I feel good about the things that I did over the week towards this goal.
• Complete three cardio workouts where my heart rate is between 65% and 80%.
emoticonBetween the cleaning (where I moved furniture and mowing the lawn with the push mower). I worked out six of the seven days. My activity level was definitely up this week.

• Eat within my calorie range for 6 of the seven days. Including 4 vegetables and 2 fruits a day.
I did well with this goal, I did manage to stay within my calorie intake.

• Do a weekly blog on my accomplishments for the week.
A little late but better late than never.

• Keep a daily journal.
Still not doing well with this goal but I am leaving it here because I want to work on getting this accomplished.

7.To decrease my health risk associated with obesity.

This week is going to be the week for starting the journaling daily.

Update to my Goals

Monday, June 30, 2008

Well it been a week and I am going to update the steps that I have taken towards my goal.

• Complete three cardio workouts where my heart rate is in the 80% zone. (I hope the majority of the time these workouts will be on my bike).
emoticonJune 29 - I did three bike rides this week. My friend and I made goal to maintain 14 mph by middle of July. Each ride we improved by going further in less time.
So the first ride was 14 miles in 70 minutes, second ride was 15 miles in 63 minutes and the third ride was 25 miles in 105.
• Complete three cardio workouts where my heart rate is between 65% and 80%.
emoticonThis one I need to work harder on. While I did some cardio and gardening over the last week, I am still working to make this a more consistence habit.
• Eat within my calorie range for 6 of the seven days. Including 4 vegetables and 2 fruits a day.
emoticonI eat within my calorie range for all seven days, but one day I did not get my fruits but when I look back the number of fruits eaten in the week is more than I would have eaten in a month back in January.
• Do a weekly blog on my accomplishments for the week.
emoticonI am working on my second blog. This assisted me in reflecting on my accomplishments of the week and to determine what areas need work.
• Keep a daily journal.
emoticonThis is an area that I need to work on. I did not journal one day.
3. To no longer be considered morbidly obese.
4. To allow me to feel more comfortable in my clothes.
5. Improve my biking skills so that I can keep up with my friends, so I do not have to hold them back from getting a good workout.
6. To complete a century ride on my bike with out it taking 8 hours.
7. To get at or below the weight on m drivers license before the renewal date of September 2010.
So as I reflect on the activities and steps that I have taken over the last week I feel this week was successful but definitely have areas that I would like to improve upon. I will keep working on those goals and look forward to reviewing my success again next year.

emoticon emoticon(This is my Rocky cheer for your blog!)

Good job on your reflection on your efforts in this blog. Blogs are like public journals . . . it is an important tool in tracking your Healthy Lifestyle Odyssey. You can use it to record your mental and emotional steps in this journey. Blogging is a great way to review your challenges and successes, just like you did in this blog. Include how you do and how you feel in regards to your progress. You can even include a photo that you find inspirational or just allows you to visualize your goals.

I hope you find blogging a great way to chronicle your journey as well as to spread the spark. Did you realize that your blog titles appear in each of your team pages (near the left hand side of the page near the bottom)? Unlike journals, blogs are public and for good reason. When a team member sees a blog title that appeals to them they may check it out and comment. Comments are great as they are wonderfully supportive, sometimes insightful to the fact that others share our challenges and concerns, and sometimes just plain funny. One more benefit that I have found is that blogging often helps to identify your own supportive network of SP friends who will drop by and comment on a regular basis. So keep your eye out for the follow-up comments.

Kudos on your ever evolving blog style. Keep it up and blog often. Also, keep up the effort with biking . . . Wow, 25 miles is most impressive! You are an inspiration to all of us who are not as confident riding bikes in traffic. Remember your helmet!
