Making progress

I know it's barely been a week since I started tracking my meals again but I have already lost four pounds this week! It feels so amazing to be losing weight again and to feel in control of what I put into my body. I've said it so many times before and I'll say it again: the nutrition tracker makes all the difference in the world!! There is power in knowledge, that's for sure! It makes me feel so good to know I'm meeting my body's nutritional needs and treating it with the love and respect it deserves.

It really does!

    This is so true! When I track I see progress quickly, but lately I've been lacking in motivation. I need to get back on track, so I can finish this year off right!

The healthy choices I made today!

When it comes to most things in life, it's true that small things add up along the way and eventually lead to big things. I'm all about the small changes! I love how you don't really even notice some healthy choices you're making (for example, when I'm cooking) and yet they all add up and make me a healthier person!

Every day we are faced with options. We can choose how our days turn out and whether we feel good or bad about them when they're over. The healthy choices I made today include:

- I went to Subway and skipped the dressing and chose the whole wheat bread instead of white bread
- I walked around for 6.5 miles (to classes and back and around town doing some Christmas shopping)
- tracked what I ate and planned my meals so that I would stay within my calorie range and meet my nutritional goals (which I did!)
- had a SMALL dessert after dinner but chose not to have a second serving (something I normally would have done) because I knew I would then go over my calories for the day
- when cooking dinner, I used whole wheat spaghetti and ate a much smaller serving I normally would have

Those are just a few examples, I'm sure there's more! The thing is, even when I was struggling and had a hard time not going back to my old ways, I still held on to most of my new healthy habits, such as regular exercise, healthy breakfasts, regular meals and drinking my water. And I managed to not gain more than a couple of pounds even when I had no motivation. Before, I would have decided that the "diet" was over and go back to mindless eating and no exercise. At least I fought for my Spark! That makes me confident that this is a real lifestyle change, not a diet.

    This really hits me since I am NOT a binger. My whole weight gain was due to a regular daily lack of knowledge and control over about a 15 year period. It was a weight gain creep. So I do have to make sure I don't return to that. I have to take and think each day so that I can make sure I am within my acceptable limits. Thanks for the mind jolt.

    This is such inspiration here... you've totally captured what the journey into a healthy lifestyle is all about! Too often we want the quick fix with instant gratification, but we have to remember (like you said) the power is in those small *seemingly negligible* choices we make on a daily basis.. those are what give the biggest results in the long run! Hello again Friends!

I hope you all are having a great, healthy and productive day so far! Mine has been very nice and busy. I got a little Christmas shopping done! I LOVE Christmas. We're putting up the Christmas tree tomorrow and also the rest of the decorations. It's so nice that it's snowy outside. Nothing like snow to get you in that Christmas mood!

I met all my nutritional goals today and went for a walk as well! I usually always crave something sweet after my meals but today I just had a few grapes after lunch and that was enough. I didn't even get cravings! Also, I've been really trying to monitor my sodium intake and avoid using salt as much as I used to. I do still use it when I cook but way less than I used to. And much to my surprise, the food tastes just the same - or actually, even better!

As I said on a previous entry, I'm finally (mostly) stress-free and in a calm and peaceful place. I find that focusing more on the present - as difficult as it is sometimes - makes a huge difference. This SparkPeople quote rang true to me when I read it:

    I haven't dome much Christmas shopping at all. I need to get to it. I put up my tree and all my outside decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. The weather has been rather warm here for us. Over the weekend it was in the 70s. It should be cold here, not warm.

Hello Friends!

Today was a productive day and I'm so ready for bed. It's 11 pm here and I usually don't go to bed before midnight but right now I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. I had an exam today which I think went well and I also did LOADS of laundry and studied for another exam and the day just flew by! But it was a great one though! The weather was so nice: sunny, crispy, cool. It snowed on the weekend and now everything is covered in white. So beautiful.

I ate healthy today, walked to my classes and back (takes about an hour when I walk really briskly) and met all my goals. It feels really good to be back at it again! I've missed feeling this calm and in control.

Welcome to today

I've had a great day today. Nothing special happened, there's no particular reason for feeling so happy and relaxed but all I know is that I'm in a good place right now. The stress is FINALLY gone. Ever since we moved to our new place in September and my classes started I've been more or less stressed nonstop. I don't know what happened but I finally seem to have reached a peace of mind. Let's hope it's here to stay! I know I need to work on stress management and find healthy and helpful ways to deal with stress when it's unavoidable. Mediation, yoga and exercise have all proved effective.

In another note, I weighed myself this morning and was happy to see I had lost 1 kg/2 lbs! I won't be weighing myself before next Sunday because I really want to stick to weighing myself only once a week. My goal is to lose 2 pounds by then but obviously I'll be happy with any amount I manage to lose. I don't want to obsess about it but at the same time I really feel like it's good to have weekly goals.

Today I tried a few new recipes from the SparkPeople Cookbook. For lunch, I made the Lower Count of Monte Cristo sandwich and Carrot slaw with apples. And for dinner I made veggie and chicken quesadillas and they were delicious! I used whole wheat tortillas and much to my surprise they were really good!

I met all my goals today and I'm feeling so confident and motivated. It just goes to show that small things can make a big difference: we can either make our day count and face its challenges head on or we can spend it procrastinating and avoiding mirrors. I'm so glad I made today count. I've been procrastinating for long enough now.
