First 5K, stupid calf muscle and a change of eating

So, I did my first 5K on Thursday after work. It was for Pea Soup Days in the town where I work and the T-shirt is awesome.
Other then the T-shirt, I was not totally happy with my performance. I had wanted to run it under 35 minutes but was just over 36 minutes. The course had some tough hills and my calf was killing me so it was not ideal. I either pulled or tore part of my calf muscle a couple of week ago and the hills made it scream. I will find out next week where I place. My other goal was to finish in the top 2/3. Not sure if I did that. I should be happy that I ran it and did not finish last but when I set a goal, I really want to achieve it and I feel that I did not do that.

It only really bothers me when I run so I guess I will need to stop running for a while. So, it is my elliptical and bike. Biking is my first love so I need to get back to it. I want to do another 5K or better yet a 10K the 3rd week in August with my sister. I really have to LISTEN to my body and rest the leg.

To top it all of the scale has not been moving in the right direction. Up about 1 pound from 3 weeks ago which is better then the up 4 from 2 weeks ago. So, I am going back to low carb for a while. It worked for me a number of years ago and I am getting so frustrated that I need to change it up a bit. Downside, I am so NOT hungry. Have to try hard to eat calorie dense foods to get the calories in.

I have an event in about 5 weeks that I wanted to be at my goal weight for when I started this again in January. I should have been able to reach it but my body is just so damn stubborn that I just want to see if I can get to 180 by then. We will see. If I don't make it, it will not be from a lack of trying.

  How many calories are you eating a day? If you aren't eating enough calories, your metabolism will slow down and your body will start using more muscle for energy than fat.

I hope a doctor or nutritionists can help you.

I have not been hungry the past couple of days. Even after the race I could get just a few pieces of watermelon down and a protein smoothie when I got home. Just do not understand why this has to be so hard. I understand it being work but this is ridiculous. I just wish there was more info out there on people like us, who watch everything we eat and workout but do not see results. Maybe the new doctor I am seeing will have some insite but I am not holding my breath.

    WTG completing the race on a strained calf. I certainly understand your frustration with the scale as I am dealing with the same problem. And I also had the problem with not being hungry --that's a sign that you are undereating and your metabolism has dropped (according to what I've read). Seems to take a long time to correct itself. I get myself over one wall then another one pops up. I've gone up on calories, cycled and now dropped my carbs a bit and I'm making a little headway by constantly changing. I should have been at my goal next month and I still have 25 I want to lose. Rest that leg and change up your workouts. You'll get through this!

So tired

I was really active this past weekend and now I am feeling it.

Saturday I planted and weeded my gardens for 4 1/2 hours after a 4 mile, 45 minute run. Sore that night. Burned 3334, ate 2401 for a deficit of 933.

Sunday I mowed the lawn and bagged some of the grass for another 4 hours. Burned 3642, ate 2400, deficit 1242.

Then on Monday, I went for a really long bike ride (42 miles) on one of the prettiest bike trails I have been on. Burned 3744, ate 2377 for a deficit of 1367. Activity for the day was over 4 hours with over 2 of that being vigorous.

Tuesday was training day with the personal trainer. The one good thing is that two other women were there with me that I call the "whiners". They are not nearly as strong or fit as I am so David needs to take it a bit easier and that was ok with me. Burned 2593, ate 2143 for a deficit of 450.

Today is my rest day and boy do I need it.

Tomorrow, I have training again and I might run Friday morning and Sunday morning or Monday night. I have to turn my registration on for a 5K that is going on next week. The weather looks like it should be OK so i think that I can do it (I DO NOT RUN IN THE HEAT).

Needless to say with all of the activity that I did there was no way that I could not have a huge deficit. For the 3 days I had over a 3500 calorie deficit. I had better have lost some weight when I check this weekend.

Well, time to go crawl in bed and watch some Dr. Oz.

Now that summer is here I am mowing the lawn more. My hubby said that he would but I like to use it for a workout plus, he would not do it right (I do not like dead grass lines in my lawn so I mulch or bag), but I digress.

So last summer, I would bike or run in the morning, then mow the lawn. My lawn (with some bagging) take about 3 1/2 hours to mow with the self propelled push mower (I refuse to get a rider). With cleaning the garage a bit to get my car in before the storms and mowing I burned over 1700 calories in 4 hours. So far my daily burn is 3400 and I still have a couple of hours to go.

No wonder why I could not drop with pounds last summer with cardio in the morning and mowing plus only eating 1400 calories. Thanks to by BMF, I know NOT to do cardio on mowing days or try to spread it out over 2 day. I also need to rally make sure that I am eating enough. Weekends are hard for me since I do not have a schedule I tend to push eating later and later and I am just not hungry.

Tomorrow is my long bike ride, just for me. Hoping to go for 40 miles but we will see.


Scale increase but I'm ok because....

Saturday, May 28, 2011 TTOM is coming since I can feel the increase in water weight. I have been trying to eat more but it was not enough of a difference to have a 4 pound gain. My pants are feel way way looser, I even had to retire some this week. Inches are coming OFF!!!!!!

I also ran this morning the best time I have ever done. 3.8 miles in 44 minutes (heart felt like it was going to pop out during final push). I was worried since I have pulled a calf muscle that I would not be able to run but I should be able to do a 5K race on June 9th. YAH!!!!!

Rest of this weekend - (all while trying to dodge the rain)
1. plant the garden and flowers today.
2. Mow the lawn and do some weeding tomorrow
3. Trying to do a 40 mile bike ride Monday morning.

Eat more challenge -

Day 4 - 2773 burned - 2166 ate - 607 deficit (wanted it much less but it was training day)

Day 5 - 2498 burned - 1987 ate - 511 deficit (it was NOT a workout day).

So, goals for this weekend is still to eat more and not get a sun burn.

    I was surprise by that amount as well. I cleaned by cubbie at work and did some shopping. I guess it shows that every little bit helps.

Raise money while you work out

So, I saw this on a local news station this morning and it is the coolest thing ever. There is an organization called Plus 3 Network. Basically, you raise money for charities by working out. You pick an organization or charity that you want to help. You enter how much time you workout and what you do which earns you "kudos". These kudo's get turned into money from the corporate sponsor, so basically, you get paid to workout.

There are not a ton of charities to chose from. Some big ones, Red Cross, American Heart Association and Susan G Colman and then some smaller charities. It seems like a win, win.

With all the natural disasters going on, I picked the American Red Cross that I am going to work out for.
