New motto - Baby Steps

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Here I am again - starting over, trying again
I'm writing here to let go of the frustration and grumpiness with myself - they aren't helping - I know what I want to do, I know what I need to do, the only thing stopping me is myself; it's too easy to sit on the couch and read about everyone else's stories, too easy to make excuses and too easy to say I don't have time.
Instead of grand plans, I'm starting small, going baby steps - since all the big plans in the world are no better than small ones if you don't do them. Its not going to be a fast journey, so I will set smaller goals based on actions, not just results. I've set them up in my goal tracker

First Baby Steps:
1/ Plan weekly menus so I have healthy meals on hand
2/ Track nutrition - every day
3/ Enjoy my meals - savour each mouthful and think about what I eat
4/ Take 15 minutes each day for exercise - it's only 15 minutes. I can do that.

New Scales!

Saturday, October 10, 2009

So I went and bought some new digital scales since the old ones were giving me different numbers depending on how I stood on them. I was wanting them to be reliable and accurate - I wasn't expecting them to read differently! So thank-you Mr New Scales, you've given me an extra 1.2kgs - I jumped on the old ones to compare, no I hadn't astonishingly gained 1.2kg overnight the new scales just read heavier (or maybe it was the old ones reading lighter...)

In any case, I'm using the new scales, since they are more accurate and have better granularity (and a large readout!) - it really brought home just how silly the numbers are - scales are a good tool to gauge weight loss, but I won' t be held hostage to the numbers - just the trend (downwards!) to check my tape measures all measure the same (just kidding)

I understand completely. I just a bought a new digital scale with fat/water measurements, and I lost a pound depending on my weight shift, then my fiance hopped on and got readings within a six pound range. So, it was returned today for a standard digital scale. Problem solved!

Getting Serious Now

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

I joined Sparkpeople a while back with the intention of getting back to a happy size to help me enjoy life more. I got a bit lost on the way when work got crazy, so restarted the Fast Break stages to get me going again. I'm hoping blogging will help me stay on track this time. I think telling people about what I'm doing and how I'm going makes me more accountable and motivated to do well.

So far the best advice I've got on Spark People is the article about excuses - that usually they don't start with 'I' (like its cold, don't want to go out walking). I've used the trick of turning the excuse around so it starts with 'I' and they loose their power (and I usually end up going walking)

This time around I'm doing well with my food and exercise tracking - I still need to work on my portion control and serving sizes - maybe swapping our dinner plates and bowls for smaller ones might be a good move!

Using the nutrition tracker religiously and staying in my calorie range is the number one thing that has helped me lose weight. I usually plan and enter my foods a day or two in advance. I notice you don't have yours posted on your main page.

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know how important the tracker has been to me. Good luck to you.

Me too mostly my diet is good but my portions are way too big. When I go out I often get tempted but life and friends are to be enjoyed and it kills the mood when the food police are on duty

I find by visiting and particpating on Pp it keeps me focused.

Haven't lost any weight but I am reducing my cals and exercising and my clothes are looser.
