2014 Quilt Retreat

Monday, November 24, 2014

Okay, so the retreat with LILYGAL is history for another year. The time flies but we do enjoy the time together and things we get to work on. This is the third year for me and hopeful I'll be able to attend next year however there is some talk about moving it up which may effect my ability with work. We shall see.

At any rate, we both worked on the same quilt but doing it with different fabrics. LG's is beautiful with the bright bold colors on the white background. I opted for batiks on what I thought was white only to realize that it is an off-white. Regardless I moved on. Mine will ALL be different with the manner by which I did my applique piece. She opted for matching satin stitch and I'm doing mine with a clear filament thread (not a good choice I might add) and some of the few I did originally I let go but my tension was clearly off so the bobbin thread pulled through. It looks like stitching on the umbrella. I have since corrected this and just the clear is on top. Not fun to work with. Lesson learned.

So here is a shot of a few I layed out so you can see the difference in mine from LG's. I opted for all black handles and did put the tip on the umbrella.

And here is just one closer and with the clear filament thread.

Now to keep working on them and getting them done so it can be put together. My goal is to take back next year to share. I took my orange/black/white quilt to share this year.

And LG made me the cutest wall hanging. I'll get it and take a photo to shrae as well. I think it will go right on my spark page to share with you all. She does lovely work.

I especially love the purple batik.

Is there a secret to cutting out those curved pieces? A machine, perhaps? As I begin to think more strongly about expanding beyond my straight lines, I need to know such things! emoticon

Thank you for sharing - I learn so much by reading yours and LG's blogs.

I think the batiks are beautiful.

There were a couple 'group project' quilts at the show I went to. It was interesting how that many people could use the same pattern but get a completely different look just by changing fabric. All were stunning and I couldn't choose a favourite ... just like yours and Lily's. I can't wait to see the finished products.

Finished Quilt

Sunday, November 02, 2014

Well I finally got this one quilted and the binding on so I thought I'd share. I ended up binding in orange as well. The name of the quilt if "Lady MaDonna". Found the pattern in Shipshewanna and thought it would be fun!

Now to get started on the next one. Retreat coming in a few weeks and hope to get the top done while there. Have been cutting and getting ready today so it should go together quickly. I hope!!

Very pretty Weezie!! I like the juxtaposition of the orange against the black and white. Is the orange appliqued? Maybe a small orange print for the backing would work.....it would pick up on the orange on the top.

Weekend Accomplishment

Sunday, February 02, 2014

So yesterday was a day of staying in. More snow and cold here in Michigan so after a bit of exercise I treated myself to a 'me' day in my sewing room.

The goal was to complete the quilt top I started before my last grandchild was born. Well needless to say the goal now is his first birthday in April. He'll never know the difference. LOL

Just wanted to share. His mama chose a forest theme for his room and likes owls so I thought this fitting plus I enjoy working with colors and I got to try a few new things that I've not done much of at all. I'm pretty pleased with how it came together.

Now to get it to a friend who will quilt on her longarm and I can get the binding done and ready to move on to a new project. So many projects so little time.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals for BLC24

Sunday, January 19, 2014

My goal is to lose 5 lbs this round of BLC and how I will go about it is as follows:

Work to improve my veggie consumption daily. Shoot for 2-3 along with 2-3 servings of fruit. emoticon Cut sugars (no baked goods) and increase protein. Doing this also cuts carbs so will work to stay on the lower end of my calorie range. 1200 is the goal. I will allow 1-2 dark chocolate kisses on occasion but will count like all other foods consumed. emoticon

Since veggies is tough I will work to get a salad daily whether I must make it myself or find a place to buy one. I will also make a veggie with our evening meal and try some new recipes. Homework will be involved for this but I need, and must, do it. If I only loved them. Hopefully I can learn to love them. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Tracking is key for me. I will track my food and exercise daily. I will also post to the team tracking thread daily so it makes less stress doing it all at once at the end of the week.
I will continue to work with weights 2x a week for toning and tightening of these old muscles and hopeful it helps with the hip pain. Will pay attention and if need be, see a doctor.

Daily I will work towards at least 30 minutes of cardio and alternating upper and lower for toning and tightening. emoticon

My friend LILYGAL is my accountability buddy and we plan to talk via telephone weekly besides our daily texts on keeping one another focused especially when we are tempted to make poor choices. emoticon

My reward for making my goal this round will be to spend an entire day in my sewing room!

You can definitely do it! Measurable, time-oriented goals are the way to go. I worry about folks who have goals like "eat better." Eat better than what? A goat? Your sister? There's no accountability tied to goals like that and that's why people let themselves down so often. It's not that they lack the willpower, they just haven't articulated their goals in a way that makes them achievable.

Sounds like a great plan and you can o it. Do you like soups like veggie soup, maybe that would be a good way to get he veggies in if salad isn't"t your thing. You can do this and sounds like you and Lilygal have a great system!

Your mention of the chicken for lunch was what got me to watching my protein again in BLC23. Are you still doing that? Will you have it in your salads? That is something that I like to do in the summer - a salad with pan-grilled chicken. Maybe you would enjoy some of the salads in a jar like Diane makes.

You CAN learn to love (some) veggies. I am living proof! I don't think I ate a single green veggie until I was in my twenties. My dad was picky and Irish and our "veggies" were potatoes, butternut squash, and corn! Mom and Dad would occasionally eat hearts of Iceberg lettuce. I started eating veggies when I went on a diet in my twenties. I would cut them up and eat the veggies with a bite of meat. That's how it started. Now if I don't have broccoli, or green beans or asparagus or zucchini or similar, I feel like my meal isn't complete. I can eat a meal without starch, but not without veggies. But the funny thing is that I STILL eat them with my meat.
