Winston is Retired :(

Saturday, May 01, 2010

I knew this day would come I just didn't expect it so soon. Winston Churchill my Service Dog has been retired. He was diagnosed with cancer about 2 weeks ago. He lost 20 pounds in 8 weeks and has been sleeping a lot. Being really under weight makes it difficult for him to have the energy to do what he wants to do and to fight to stay healthy.

Plus side is so far his quality of life is good. He isn't in pain just tired. He sleeps at my feet a lot as I do work on my new non profit Ubuntu Ranch. He isn't going out on many walks because I have a big old boot on my left foot. I think he is kind of happy and not all at the same time.

Winston will continue to walk with me in non event times...like around the lake, his favorite place to be. If we get his weight back up he will be able to run with me IF his body allows. He did gain 2 pounds last week but still has 14 more to go to be at the lowest "safe" weight zone.

I am looking for a puppy but due to where I live it might be awhile. Dad is being an ass about it all so I either need to move or get him to understand I need a service dog. Sigh...very frustrating when your own parental unit gives you a hard time.

Ok so that is where Winston and I are at. Fingers and paws crossed that he has a lot more healthy months; dare I ask for at least a couple more years. He will be 11 years old May 18th!

Oh Maya, my heart broke reading that. I can imagine knowing that we know our pets don't live forever, but to have him get diagnosed with that is even more devastating. I wish you both the best and know you'll always do what's best for Winston and enjoy the rest of the time you two have together. I was glad to have met him :)

Life's changes are difficult...you've had a lot of good years with him to be thankful for!!! Could you tell me about the process of training a service animal/how to register etc or direct me to a website? I have a 3 year old collie I would love to train.

    Gordon

I sprained my ankle and tore some ligaments, slipped and fell in mud going into the house. After a 2 mile walk of course.

Am sorry to hear about Winston. Such a sweet dog. I do hope he will get out with you a few more times to walk around the lake. I have been keeping busy riding my bike this year. Since the weather has been fairly nice I've put a lot of miles on it. But hope to see you on a walk sometime soon.

What's the boot for? Hope it gets off soon. And I am praying for a good answer to your living and support issue. It does make it hard when those closest to you don't give you the support you need. I guess that's why we are here.

Take care.

Yup we have a quality of life plan in place. The technical part is easy-ish. He isn't my first senior dog it is the emotional part that is hard. The vet says that him gaining weight means he isn't done yet which I agree. He is one of those dogs that if he was done he'd stop eating, drinking water and be like nope I'm finished.

Sorry to hear your lossing Winston, my own family has had a dog whom suffered a brain tumour.. Let Wintson go to sleep before he feels pain- our dog God bless her suddenly got up and began to go round in circles.. My brother collected her and we took her to the vet.. She quietly slept in, in my brothers arms..
We got another puppy, shortly efter I still remember the good times... We never forget them..

YAY for Positive Progress!!

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I am so excited! I walked 2.9 miles this morning...that is right I went from walking just short of a mile to 2.9 miles. My pace is still slow but not as slow as it was.

I walked a 17.57 minutes/mile not as bad as my 24 minute miles I was doing when I first got my Nike+ in June. But not as good as my 16.15 minute pre car accident.

Scot my Dr. was impressed and is happy to see my progress. I am being a good patient, do what I am told and trying to do as many of the exercises I can at home. I guess the most important part is that I am proud of myself. I am working hard to heal and heal right. It would have been so easy to curl up and mope around complaining of the pain. But how could I give up on walking and being healthy?! With all the work I did pre accident it would be sad to have seen it go to waste. I will be back to the 16.15 minute and better real soon because I want to!

I hope everyone else is having a wonderful weekend!

Woo Hoo Positive Car Accident Update

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

I have been seeing my Chiropractor for something different than just alignment. He has been doing a muscle memory training program. After I left my appointment today I was feeling good. I wasn't in pain afterwards.

I was also happy to hear that he thought my goal of walking a 15K March 27th was a reasonable goal. It will take work but we both think I can do it. He also said that if I am able to do it that I will be done with the medical part of the accident. Since it will be my first walking event since the accident. I might consider doing just the 5K so I don't push myself too hard plus my wallet wouldn't mind it too. We'll see.

After last year and the car breaking down I really really want to go!

I just have to remember that it will take time to build my speed back up. I think that is the hardest part since I worked so hard to get to the 16.20 minute mile. To have to start that again is frustrating.

Accident Updates Continue

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Time...it just takes time. Slowly but surely I am healing; my hip and lower back still hurts pretty bad on a regular basis. I am happy to announce I did walk almost a mile at once this week, but with that comes a depressing time of a 19 minute mile. Compared to my normal 16.15 min. miles before the accident. I worked hard to get to the 16 minute mark and will have to work hard to get back.

My goal is to be ready to walk Birch Bay Road Race at the end of March.

I walked again with mom today...I walked a mile @ 19.21 min the pain was manageable with Alieve rather than prescription drugs so that is good.

Hi glad your healing, even if its slower than you hoped. It takes a long time to heal from those kinds of injuries. Good job on the mile walk and your time will improve, just don't push too hard. Have a great week!
