A Saturday to remember

Saturday, June 02, 2012

We have been following the band's activities on FB. The band
director has posted pics as well as those parents fortunate
enough to fly out to Washington, DC.
DS and his best friend were given the honor of placing the
wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The military
escort walked in next to him. We saw two pics and it was
mentioned that someone had a video of it. I will keep
checking so DH and I can watch it.
The band played at the Lincoln Memorial. Lots of people
were walking by, some listened and others kept on
walking. But they were asked for an encore so they
repeated one particular selection.
Then it was off to eat and then walk through the Mall
in the evening hours. I texted DS and he was very tired
but we exchanged about 10 messages before wishing
each other good night.
As for my day, aside from checking FB, was spent baking
bread, working in the garden, some fencing projects that
needed to be done at the farm, and at last, coming home
to grill steaks and potatoes, feasting on fresh spinach
and then, sitting by the fire pit, being joined by the next
door neighbor, DD and the GC. A very peaceful ending
to an exceptional day.
I wish I could post pics from today but maybe I will be
lucky enough to figure it out, if it can be done.
Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your Sunday. HUGS!

What an honor for your son. I am sure this trip will be something he will talk about years from now. I remember going to DC with my family the year I turned 16 and I still remember it. I love traveling to places with history-theme parks don't interest me. I always felt my sons got the most from trips where they actually experienced history and that is what your son is doing.
Sounds like you are keeping busy on the home front.

What a memorable trip! My son's class in 5th grade made the trip and I well remember the ceremonies at the tomb of the unknown soldier, as well as the wall, which was so meaningful for his dad.

And the music just adds so much meaning to it! Thanks for sharing this slice of your life with us!

How exciting!! How times have changed. How great that you can stay in such good communication and vicariously experience your son's trip. Wish I could have done that with my daughter (she's 31 years old now). So glad you can. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see the pictures. I know you are so proud of him. -Marsha

How fantastic to experience such an honor! Our Josh went to Washington and took the time to find all of the names of his father's friends that sadly perished in the war on the wall of the Viet Nam vets. He had to work hard to make that happen bribing his history teacher into taking the group of kids from his class to go there. It wasn't on their schedule...but if ANYONE could make things happen that normally wouldn't it was Josh. He took pictures of each name with his video and did a small solomon tribute than gave a copy of the special memorial to his father for Father's Day.

It touched DH more than ANY gift he's ever gotten. Just the sheer sweetness of Josh to go out of his way to honor his father's friends was so very touching.

DH always felt so guilty that he lost so many dear friends in the war that he wanted to go to. He wasn't able to do that because he was classified 4-F because of earlier health problems as a baby. I'm thankful he didn't have to go..I might not have him today...but it was really really hard on him to see his buddy's leave then not return. Josh wanted to help him by honoring them. That's the kind of boy our angel was....big sigh.

I'm so happy your DS got to experience this trip and I surely hope you can chase down the video...we'd all love to see it! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Touching base with DS

Friday, June 01, 2012

The band had an awesome day, touring the White House and
playing at the Armed Forces Retirement Home for Veterans.
It was a small group of 30+ people who attended but one
veteran wrote a poem for the band. It will be fun to read
it when the band comes home.
DS and I texted back and forth and then he called to tell
me he was having an awesome time. They were walking
in the Mall this afternoon and seeing some of the sites,
saving the Lincold Memorial for tomorrow as that is
where their last performance will be. I think they will
be going to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier earlier in
the afternoon. So far, it has been a great experience for
42 kids from a small, rural school.
DS and I agreed to "lease" his goats out this year. The
new minister at my home church has 5 children, 4 of
whom are just the right age for 4-H. We signed them up
as members and completed all the paperwork so they
could each show one of the baby goats and one that was
too young to show last year. These children are home-
schooled so they need to meet new friends. The youngest
is 10 and the oldest is 14. At that age, I can allow them to
go to the farm and work with the goats whenever they
have time. Talk about excited! We sent all the fresh eggs
home with them and they all thought they would like to
learn how to milk the goats. That would be fun.
Basically, when you lease the animals, it is just to have
the children have ownership and the responsibility for
those animals until after the State Fair. Guess I'll be
doiing a few less chores LOL!
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.

How exciting for these kids to 4-H!! When I was a kid, I thought that would be so cool, but allergies prevented it. I'd get soooo wheezy around the farm animals. Well, cows and horses. Was never around the precious goats! Petting zoos were the only exposure I got to those. And hey, you got help with the critter chores! Hope you are having a great Sunday, my friend!

This trip will stay with your son forever...what a blessing he is enjoying and you'll be able to treasure all of his memories right along with him for many years to come.

I think that's SO terrific that you get other children involved...first with the goats..and then with 4H. I always wished that I could have had that experience as a kid. When we go back to the Iowa State Fair the 4H building is ALWAYS my favorite.

I think we might have to miss it this year..but I still remember it well from last years trip home.

Hugs to you and DS too!

Your DS has a beautiful day to sight see today..he is in my neck of the woods! (Yesterday we had crazy storms, sure he mentioned that!)

My SO was in 4H as a teenager, and learned how to show his cows at fairs and did quite well at that. He talks all the time about how much 4H did for him.

I loved how your blog was all about passing experiences from one generation to the next. I will keep this in mind today as I start working with a 20-year-old student intern on a music project for the summer. I'll be passing on all that I've learned to her as an investment in her future (and maybe she'll take on this job one day and I can regain my summer!!)

It's rainy and cold here today (I just gave in and turned on the furnace!!) so no outdoor work for me today.

DS and friends

Thursday, May 31, 2012

I sent a text message to DS about 10 minutes before scheduled
arrival time. I called 30 minutes later to wish him a happy day.
At 11:01, our time, he said they had just arrived in DC. This
means it was noon, 4 hours later than planned. Evidently the
travel company neglected to take into consideration for
meals. I think the kids missed at least 2 events but DS said
they had seen "lots of stuff" and he was tired. Well, he
will probably sleep well tonight. Three full days of activities
are in the works. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for stopping by. HUGS!

Moving along

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

I was pleasantly surprised that I had a quiet morning after
the 3 day weekend. The phone was fairly quiet all day. I
can handle that.
DS had his final practice before heading out to DC. He has
most of his packing done and his BIL brought his a refill of
his pain medication for the trip. He has his money AND his
health insurance card safely tucked away. He needs to be
at school at 6 am and the buses leave at 7. I hope to go
down to take pictures of them as they leave town.
The fundraiser should have cleared another $2,000
after expenses. The show of support for these fine
young students is outstanding in a town of 602 people.
I have to take into consideration that 2 of our senior
citizens have gone to spend time with family, due to
health concerns. One is the lady with the cardiac problems
that we took to the hospital a week ago. Another is Mr T's
dad, who had successful surgery today. I keep track of
my "family", every single one LOL!
Have a pleasant evening and a wonderful Wednesday.
Thanks for stopping by. Your comments are so welcome.

PS DS2's team lost 5 to 3 in the 11th inning.
