The Birth of the DIY Bride

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

So this has been a crazy good weekend. I got engaged yesterday! now the fun of planning a wedding begins. We plan on getting married almost exactly a year from now in February 2013.

I was totally shocked he took me to one of our favorite places Oakland Nursery. He took me to the greenhouse and got on one knee and popped the question. I was so shocked. I am still so shocked!

We are working with a pretty tight budget for our wedding. Lucky for me I can work as much overtime as I want at my job. Iím going to attempt working 4 12 hour shifts every week. Iíll have 3 days off so hopefully it wonít be too stressful. I have bills that I want to pay off before we get married and I want to pay for our wedding and honeymoon. I really donít want to start our marriage in deep debt but I donít want to have a cheesy wedding either.

To cut down on cost Iím thinking about doing all my invitations/printable materials, favors, and centerpieces myself. The biggest thing that has me worried right now is catering cost, and flowers. I want the decorations to be pretty but I canít justify spending tons of money on flowers that are just going to die. Iím on the hunt for super cute flower alternatives.

I planned to lose weight this year but now the pressure is on. I lost 140 lbs a few years ago but gained back 67. Now I want to lose around 100 pounds before next February. I never reached my goal weight during my first weight lose attempt but I plan to this time. Working so many hours and planning a wedding is going to make it super hard to cook and keep up with a workout schedule. Last time I lost weight my life wasnít very busy so that was my primary focus. This time itís just one of many things that I have on my plate. This week I started a system of cooking some meals ahead so that I can just take my dinner to work or just reheat it if Iím at home. So far its working out very well.

For my workout plan Iím going to do 90 days of Revabs with some additional workouts included. Today I did my first workout and it was super hard. I am so out of shape. This program last 90 days and it is perfect for my fitness level right now. Iíve also been doing wii workouts lately. I really like Goldís gym cardio. The boxing routines are super fun and challenging. I managed to do one a boxing workout this afternoon even though I was worn out from Revabs Power Intervals.

The program is 90 days and I expect that mid way through its not going to challenging for any more even though you change workouts to increase intensity. I plan to start doing Kettleworx along with Revabs once it starts getting easy for me. Kettleworx is the perfect add on workout program because its only 20 minutes and you do 3x a week.

If you time your wedding right, you can get a good deal on local flowers. My friend bought the bare minimum of flowers from a local florist and then went to a wild sunflower field the day before the wedding. Her and her husband took pictures and then they cut lots of flowers for the wedding.

First let me congratulate you on your engagement and good luck with your weight loss efforts.

My son and DIL did a DYI wedding which they chose to be very informal. They held thier reception at the town hall-it was a quaint location on Lake Erie which they got for a song - My DIL and her mom designed and made the invitations - I made the cake (including a seperate gluten-free decorated cake and cupcakes- her grandfather and mother and several other relatives have celiac)and petite cookies. Her parents had the food catered by the local IGA (it was delicious). My DIL is a teacher so thier favors were books which included bookmarks her sister designed and they printed themselves. Her sisters boyfriend acted as photographer. My youngest son was bartender. and her brother was DJ and helped guide the reception. Like I said it was informal and not quite "traditional" and the table settings were bamboo in tall clear straight vases.

While it was not a formal reception everyone had fun and it was very memorable because it reflected thier unique personalities.

Huge congrats on the engagement! Your ring is spectacular!!

I'm also a DIY bride! I'm getting married in October of this year. One of the best resources I've found is TheKnot.com's community boards - there's a DIY and a budget forum, as well as local forums. I have gotten so many fantastic ideas from there so far and more just keep coming! I'm doing my own save-the-date cards, invitations, essentially all decorations, and possibly floral. I'm going with a partial brooch bouquet with silk flowers mixed in. I'm buying it a piece at a time, whenever I find brooches or charms that catch my interest, and I'm using a lot of heirloom family pieces, which will of course be free!

If you're still in Columbus (I saw this blog through the Columbus SparkTeam), let me know if you want to go wedding thrifting or craft store hopping together!

Beautiful Ring.. Congrats on the engaement.

First I suggest you join pinterest.com there are soo many DIY ideas out there. Second I am not doing flowers at all for our wedding.. Right there with you girl- too much money.. My Bouquet is going to be a broach bouquet-garage sales here I come. I have also seen super cute/easy DIY fabric flower boquets. I am thinking about those for my bmaids or they are going to carry a clutch.

Second we are paying for the majority of our wedding- granted my parents are taking care of the food and beer which is going to be a huge cost, but I was soo stressed.. Now that we have started stuff its pretty manageable.. We are getting are downpayments made and then we are going to make monthly payments to our photographer etc until they are paid in full.

    Congratulations!! Love Oakland Nursery!!
I'm planning a wedding too! October of this year! I plan on doing my own flowers, corsages and bouts for the bridal party and family along with the help from a bridesmaid (we met while working at a flower shop). My mom is doing centerpieces, my (future) mother in law is doing favors (pretty & delicious cookies) and my MOH is doing my cake. Ask around, you never know what kind of hidden talents your friends and family have!

Rediscovering Purpose

Friday, July 01, 2011

I've been totally off my game this entire year and it has been pretty hard getting back on track. I realized the other day I'm starting a new leg of my journey so I have new obstacles to tackle which means I need new tools. We get so stuck into our routines and what got our journey started that we forget that we change as people so what we do in order to succeed must also change.

I've eaten at restaurants more this year than I have my entire life. I really need to learn how to incorporate eating out and eating clean. I've also been eating pretty bad things when I'm at home. I need to cut back on the sugar especially in drinks. I have lemonade and fruit juice. I'm slipping back into some of my old habits of drinking like a fish. The weird thing is now I drink tons of water plus things I shouldn't. Before I would just drink the sugary drinks.

My biggest hurdle is getting back to my workout plan. I'm going to attempt to complete all 20 weeks of Turbo Fire with Kettleworx thrown in for extra resistance training. I'm excited to start working out on a regular schedule. I really miss it.

Have a great 4th of July everyone. I'll be back Tuesday.

New Love, Old Habits

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

I haven't been focused at all on losing weight this year. I have been working out some but I haven't been watching what I eat all. My workouts are sporadic at best. I'm not in the best shape of my life any more but I'm not in the bad shape either.

Before I started dating my boyfriend I didn't eat out at all. Now I eat out every weekend all weekend. To top things off my mom has been cooking brunch every day and she always makes unhealthy foods. I haven't even been trying to use my willpower. Lately I've been eating whatever whenever I feel like it without thinking about the consequences.

I don't have same obsession I use to have about being skinny. My boyfriend really loves my body the way it is. Curves and flaws. Over the past few months his acceptance has lead to me accepting myself. I still want to get leaner. My goal weight range has changed. I would be happy at 160-140 before I was thinking 130-125. Right now I really don't have any number I'm working towards. I'm more concerned about how my clothes fit and how much body fat I have. I want to add some more muscle to my curves and have super fit body.

I'm so happy with my life right now. I just want resolution to all the unfinished business from my past. Getting healthy is big unfinished chapter that I want to close so that I can move on and focus on starting a life with the man I love. It's crazy how life works I wasn't looking to fall on love or start a serious relationship but it just happened. I never thought that one person could make me so happy or change my life so much in such a short amount of time.

I think I'm going to give Supreme 90 days a chance. It's a cheap/ easier knock off of P90x. I'm also going to do Powerfit by Stephanie Huckabee. I've never been much of a program person because I like a lot of variety. At this point in my life I think programs might be the best solution for me not being consistant.

I am soooo happy for you. You sound so happy, your boyfriend is so lucky to have an amazing person like you in his life. Funny, love comes when we least expect it often when we don't want it. Congrats on all that you have accomplished. I am happy that you are back on Spark. Let's make the month of May wonderful.

I hear ya about the boyfriend and mom's cooking things! My boyfriend's in school 2 hours away, and when he comes home disaster strikes as far as my diet goes. Also, my mom just loves cooking fried things and tempting me with them. haha

Good luck handling all the temptations!

Valentine Self Lovin'

Monday, February 14, 2011

I'm so excited I lost 3.8 pounds last week. I was so surprised that I had lost that much because I missed quite a few workouts last week. I'm pushing forward to my mini goal 175.

I went out for Valentine's Day on Saturday so today is reserved for self love. I'm going to workout and read a book about body image. I have quite a few of them but I settled on the Good Body By Eve Ensler. It is so weird how the view you have of yourself is so much diffrent than how other people view you. I know it's a little strange but I hate it when people say I'm beautiful. It makes me feel so uncomfortable. I don't like that hearing positive things about myself makes me feel that way. I'm going to make an effort to change my frame of mind.

This weeks workout schedule:

Mon: Kick Punch Crunch Cathe

Tues: the firm 500 calorie workout - airclimber 20 minute workout

Weds - The firm complete body sculpting - Turbo Jam 20 minute HIIT

Thurs- 10 minute solution tone trouble zones

Friday - Step Boxing - fit to the core

Sat - Cardio Pump fusion Brooke Benten

Sun -10 Minute solution yoga

Motivator of the Day is Motivated

Saturday, February 12, 2011

Things have been going pretty well so far this year. I've been doing really well with my nutrition. I still need to step my workouts up some and spend more quality time on SP.

I've been a little distracted lately. I just started a new relationship which has been a complete joy and surprise. I never really wanted to date until I reached my goal weight. Life seemed to have different intentions than I did. I'm learning to go with the flow and accept that life doesn't begin when you reach a certain number on the scale.

I haven't been very consistent with my Turbo Fire/ Chalean extreme rotation. I need more variety. I'm bored with the routines so I'm starting a 90 day Firm Rotation tomorrow. I'm going to use all the workouts that I have in my arsenal but I'm following a workout schedule that is based on using workouts made by the Firm. My goal is to workout 2 times a day. One full workout in the morning and a mini workout on slow days when I don't have to many plans. The mini workouts are going to be short cardio ones that are 10-30 minutes long. For some of them I'm going to do HITT workouts from Turbo Fire.

Overall I feel really terrific. I just want be finished with the weight loss chapter in my life so I can move on to other things like the maintaining weight loss chapter. It's been a long journey full of ups and downs. I still can't believe how much my life has changed in such a relatively short amount of time. I am so blessed and I thank God every day for things that he has helped me achieve.

Have a good day sparkers. I'll be back tomorrow with my workout schedule for the week.

And by the way, congrats on your new relationship! And I can totally relate to wanting to be done with the weight loss chapter. Sometimes I feel like it's taking me forever, but I try to remind myself that it's the slow and gradual changes than will keep me where I want to be in the end.
