Plateaus! GRRRR

Tuesday, April 03, 2012

Okay, since my hubby has come back home from his school about a month ago I have been STUCK at 179.5-178. I cannot seem to make the scale budge!
Now all that being said, my clothes do fit better as of late, I have noticed slight muscle tone building in my arms, my stomach (while still flabby) seems a bit firmer, and my butt seems smaller (because my pants are a bit looser there too). But I cannot seem to actually LOSE any weight!
Now I read recently here on Sparkpeople that you can either be in "weight loss mode" or "building muscle mode". The article suggested it's best to work on losing first and then building muscle which kind of seems contrary from what I've read before. What does everyone think? Any tips? Suggestions? I've started tracking my meals again because it seems like no matter what I do I'm stuck.
I kind of get the feeling like some days I'm not eating enough and I'm in starvation mode and sometimes I'm eating too much. This weekend I know I ate like crap because I was at Busch Gardens but I also walked a LOT. 16.645 steps. Not bad. My abs, my arms and my shins were bothering me horribly on Sunday.
I just know, I'm stuck!
More cardio? More Strength training? What's the secret!

I have the same problem being stuck at a plateau so I know how frustrating it can be. I know what to do, but I just don't do it. I agree, tracking is the best way to see how much you're eating. I also think Sparkpeople figures calories too high. For me, I don't lose unless I stay around 1000 (I'm short). The bottom line is calories in vs calories out. emoticon

Tracking is the only way to be sure whether you're eating too much or too little--everything, at least for awhile, to see what you're really consuming. How your clothes fit is a better gauge of how you're doing rather than the scale; sometimes it has not budged at all for me, yet I'm wearing smaller sizes. The scale eventually catches up, though.

My 2 cents as a nurse. Some exercise is needed. Too much can stall weight loss. I don't give much credence to people not losing weight because their calories are too low. They are usually too high and sparkpeople recommends them too high. Weigh your food and record every bite. Eat at the low end of your calories and have that amount estimated on a site separate from here. Mine ended up being 1200 calories - well below salespeople's recommendation.

Two Words.......ROAD TRIP!

Friday, March 30, 2012

Today at 12N I head out with my two favorite guys, (hubby and son) to one of our favorite destinations. Busch Gardens in historic Williamsburg VA. Simply CAN NOT WAIT!
It was nice this morning that my son got ready so fast because he was so excited to get this party started!
It's always nice when your kid has a fire lit under their rear end on school mornings!
I managed to get almost all bags packed, another load of laundry almost finished. Everything is now just waiting for my hubby to get home and load it all up in his truck. I get off from work, then we pick up my son from school and voila. We're on the road in a race to get past Washington DC and its nasty traffic before the beginnings of rush hour (which starts at about 2-4 pm).

Oh and another postive before I head back into the grind here at work. Hubby's leave for our cruise got approved. So we're now at the 90% chance of cruising. Happy days!

Road trip ideas

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Well on Friday (WOW TOMORROW!) we're going on a hastily planned road trip down to Williamsburg. Every year we visit down there as we enjoy the area and most of all, we love Busch Gardens.
Wonderful thing about this place. The park is gorgeous, the music is lovely, the weather SHOULD BE lovely, the rides are great and I know (from the last time I visited) that my steps that I track with my GoWearFit will be around 14000.
Each time we visit this park I am so tired, so sore at the end of the day. My legs always feel as if they are about to fall off. The next day my arms are sore from holding onto the shoulder restraints on the roller coasters.
Too bad I never lost weight from a day at the park. That would be even a better bonus but then I'm not exactly eating the absolute HEALTHIEST while I'm there.

Still though, I've decided that instead of going with my normal "road trip food" of potato chips and dip, soda pop and what not I am going to substitute the chips with healthier ideas.
I've been looking it up and I think I came up with a neat idea.
Grape tomatoes, mozzarella cheese balls/sticks, kale chips (that's if I can find the time to make them), avocado and crackers, and celery sticks with cream cheese and asparagus spears.
That and lots of water, Neuro drinks, and crystal light lemonade.
Now I just have to pick that all up by this evening. I wish I could leave work early today but I don't think that'll be possible. Maybe give my hubby a shopping list instead.
Tonight we're being uber healthy and having an italian bean soup and salad with naan bread.
I REALLY want to be down to 170 by end of April!!! The cruise is becoming more and more a reality as hubby's leave paperwork just got approved!!!

Sounds like a good idea...thanks for sharing. I normally go the chips and soda route too because it's convenient.

I just love zucchini chipx on road trips, too. And, I always bring a bag of nuts, and an emergency tin of sardines. Enjoy your trip. I just loved Williamsburg as a kid.

MY GOD, I want to HIT SOMEONE!

Friday, March 09, 2012

Busy day yesterday which meant I had almost no time to come here and report.
Readers digest version? Started with appointment with my first counselor, next another counselor and then everything turned sour at my follow up doctor appointment.
What should've been a 20 minute follow up appointment turning into a 40 minute appointment full of drama and arguments. Mostly, the hospital saying I have high blood pressure, me saying I don't. I almost didn't even get my lab results because the staff was so involved in taking my BP over and over and over and over and....well you get the idea.
It seems each and every time I go to this ONE clinic my blood pressure becomes elevated. At home, at my allergist, at all the other numerous places I get it checked out it's almost normal but at this clinic it goes high.
The doctor even said she is thinking I might want to go on cholesterol medicine because my HDL's (high density lipoprotein) are pretty high and my LDL's are pretty low. HDL's are the good guys.
Uh okay, she wants to put me on cholesterol medicine to DROP my good cholesterol? Okay, whatever.

Now another bomb dropped on us. NO CRUISE. Or at least not on the 26th of May. Now I'm working like mad to get this either changed or something.
I don't know what is going to happen. All vacations are all up in the air, thanks to a commander who is denying any and all leave within the next 3 to 6 months. Right during the summer months. NICE

I have the same B.P. problem when I go to the doctor. It's called "White Coat Syndrome" and is very common. I would not go on statins. They want to put everyone on them.

I am so sorry about the cruise. That totally sucks!!

No wonder your blood pressure is high at that place, stress can do that. You're not there anymore, take a deep breath.

I hope your much needed vacation comes to be.
