Short Hello

Monday, September 05, 2011

We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses ---Abraham lincoln
I like this because the day I stupidly got married at 16 my mother told me .Life is like a bunch of roses.beautiful but full of thorns. Oh how true.

Not doing much today. Wait a minute.Thats me every day isn't it emoticon
We had some rain this morning and looks like we will get more.I hope when we get the sod down we still get rain. It is a very windy day too.

Bill is threatening to take all my knives away. I cut my thumb on mandalin last night and stuck myself twice with the tip of a knife. Mandolin was carelessness on my part and knife was from using the wrong kind of knife. Nothing serious but will need to keep a bandaid on for awhile.

Ok here is another trivia. I think it was the only one of the 10 I am looking at that I knew.

A flounder has a unique trait where one of it's body parts migrates postion as it matures. What is it.

Ok Thats it for now.Hope you are enjoying your day

Life is definetly like roses, a lot of manure, a lot of thorns and a few beautiful blooms that make it all worthwhile.Loved learning about the desert plant and can't wait to learn about the flounder. One more week to Florida. Hope it quits raining when I am there.

Oh oh oh... I know this one too! I won't spoil it though. Weird eh?

I love that quotation. I have heard it before but I think I will print it and hang it on my fridge for the week. I've kind of got a peaceful easy feeling today. Got several odd jobs done and I am feeling fine.

Did I tell you I lost 2.5 pounds this week? It feels good and I want that feeling next week too. We are on a roll. Let's go!

  Hi Eleni.........
Your Mom was certainly right about life being beautiful but full of thorns. But then, I guess if it weren't for the thorns, maybe we wouldn't appreciate the beauty as much. I have to admit, some of my thorns have made me a stronger person.

Don't feel too bad about your knives. Last Saturday, I was cutting sails for Ken's sail boat with my best sewing shears. They weren't cutting just right......catching along a part of the blade.......so I sharpened them and cut my thumb so deep that we questioned the possibility of stitches. I let it bleed lots and then pinched it together and put a strong band aid on. It is fine.

It is VERY cool here today. I love it, but it reminds me so much of Fall, that I changed all of my seasonal flower arrangements, candles, windsocks, and pictures to Fall colors (which are my favorite). Some of our trees, especially the Hickory are even changing color already.

Must close as I still have so much to do before our company rolls in, which could be any day now.

Later.....
Patti emoticon

What is the strangest desert plant of all??

Monday, September 05, 2011

Welwitschia mirabilis

One of the truly remarkable members of the Kingdom Plantae belongs to the Division Gnetophyta. Its scientific name is Welwitschia mirabilis, and it only grows in a remote region of southwestern Africa in the Namib and Mossamedes Deserts. Welwitschias are extraordinary plants and certainly rank among the top ten list of "most bizarre plants on earth." Old, mature plants have a short, woody trunk or crown (caudex) that protrudes above the ground. Below the ground, the caudex extends into a large taproot. The woody trunk (stem) gives rise to two, wide, strap-shaped leaves that may reach two meters in length. Like grass leaves, their meristematic region is at the base so they continually grow even though their tips get worn off by abrasion. In fact, the leaves lie on the ground and as they flap about in the wind they become split and frayed. Welwitschia plants are dioecious, with pollen-bearing and seed-bearing cones (strobili) produced on separate male and female plants.

hard to believe the pile of stuff all comes from 2 leaves. It is indeed a strange plant

Lazy Sunday

Sunday, September 04, 2011

It is just a little cooler today. If you can call 90 cool. Really doing not much of anything. Did get stuff in fridge washed and prepped.Just have a few cans in back room to take care of. I did lose another pound this week.It was actually closer to 2# but decided to just go with the 1. I am happy with any loss.
Ok here is a butterfly that stopped by today. I could decide which to show so here they all are

And here is Abigail and Tyler.Check her little toes out.And Tyler is Mr Cool for sure

And now

Did you know

Peanut butter fact: Peanut butter was produced in St Louis in 1890 as a paste designed for people who couldn't chew well. It was a good protein substitute and George A Bayle Jr sold the ground up peanuts out of barrels for 6 cents per pound.

Now for some trivia. I am bad at this.

What is the strangest desert plant of all?? Answer tomorrow

Ok Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

  Hi Eleni.......
emoticon on the loss of the almost 2#. Good for YOU!!!!!

I could just reach into that picture of Abigail and hug her. She has had that wonderful hair since the day she was born. And her toes are too cute. Tyler is way cool with those glasses.

We are 65 degrees here today.......maybe a bit too cool........but we are supposed to be back in the mid seventies by the middle of the week, so I don't mind. After the July we had, the cool weather seems like a gift.

Take care.......
Patti

What little sweeties. Gotta just love em.
I am so glad you are doing well with the weight loss. Me too. Little by little we can do this. It does feel good to be good doesn't it!

As for peanut butter... I have not had it in the house since my oldest son moved out. I have no control of myself around any kind of nuts. Oh dear someone might take that the wrong way. emoticon. I think that might be why I am having a problem staying out of the granola. Maybe it will be the next to go.

Gazebo is up but not finished

Saturday, September 03, 2011

Bill has the gazebo up. Good thing he is good at fixing things. parts were missing etc. Right now it looks more like an umbrella but it isn't in right position and has no floor yet. Once it has a floor and the table and chairs inside it will look a lot different. It isn't a fancy wooden one as they are so expensive. I would loved to have had one of those. There are curtains and netting that come with this but doubt we will use them. I may order railing for the two openings that don't have railing.

Like I said once everything is done it will look much better
Had another yellow butterfly stop by today.

I need to do better on my eating. It isn't real bad but could be better. It is still the night time that gets the best of me.

Ok I need to finish up the grocery list. We are going to eat out at a new restaurant and then go to grocery store.

  Hi Eleni.......
Bill's pose after working on the Gazebo is the exact same one that Ken uses when he works on a project.........do you think it's a "Man-Thing?"
I love the Gazebo. You can spend many hours enjoying the outdoors or reading or visiting........lots of possibilities.
Abigail is growing too fast.........what a little beauty!!!!! My youngest son and his girlfriend and her baby were here for supper last night and I gave her a whole new wardrobe for Sadie. Ken and I went to a rummage sale and were the first ones there. It was all baby clothes and they were in perfect condition. Some still had tags on and most had had little use. Mommy was very appreciative.
Hang on with the pounds lost..........they WILL come off. Unfortunately, it all takes time.
Enjoy your Labor Day. Looks like Bill is feeling better which is good.
Take care.
