My 1-year anniversary!!!

Today is my 1-year anniversary with SparkPeople. I actually started my lifestyle change on March 9, 2009 when my daughter got me started using a government website to track my food against the food pyramid. I had learned a bit about my food intake and lost 5 pounds before one of her friends told us about SparkPeople a couple of weeks later. I began learning not only about what food I was eating, but gained a better appreciation for things like sleep and water intake and their impact on my lifestyle changes. I continued to track food for several months on the food pyramid site while I also tracked it on SparkPeople. I consistently tracked my exercise also. I found it was so much easier to make changes when I could actually see in black and white what I was doing.

Last March 9th, I weighed in at 198 pounds and was petrified of hitting that 200 mark. On my 51st birthday in October, I saw the number 148 staring up at me from my scale! But the number on the scale is only part of it. I went from a size 14-16 to a size 8-10 and discovered that shopping for clothes with my daughter could actually be fun! I no longer had to ask for help to get the clothes downstairs to the laundry room because my knees were so painful on the stairs. Now, I make extra trips downstairs just for the heck of it. My last health checkup was the best I have had in years. I smile more and donít mind quite so much when I have to have my picture taken. I sleep better at night and have more energy during the day. My lifestyle really is different and so am I!

All of this and I have never considered myself on a diet! I still have a glass of wine most days Ė and eat chocolate or a piece of cheese when I really want it. I just enjoy them in smaller quantities. I take smaller bites and savor every one. Iíve rediscovered the sweetness of fresh fruit when I want a snack and added some new vegetables to my plate. I took a break from logging things and enjoyed holiday treats a little more than I should have, but I have gotten back on track and more engaged with the SparkPeople experience than ever. What a fun learning experience this past year has been.

A daughter's inspiration

emoticon My first blog ever - another offshoot of my daughter's inspiration. Three weeks ago my daughter and I engaged in a conversation about how hard I was finding it to take the steps I needed to change my lifestyle. I was eating the wrong things at the wrong times. I was at my highest weight ever, my energy level had decreased and my arthritis was becoming more of a problem. My daughter, who hopes to major in nutrition when she heads off to college in another year and a half, suggested I start by looking at what I was eating. She introduced me to a government site that helps track food intake by the food pyramid. We talked about changes I could make - and even helped me get lunch and snacks prepared to take to work for the first couple of days. We talk daily about how to have a healthier lifestyle and are working as a team to see it happen. I can already see and feel the difference. Now - to get the fitness level up!
