I went shopping today and I came away with this feeling.

What does it take to eat healthy? Walking through the grocery store today I had to wonder what has happened? Why is it so hard to shop for healthy food? It seems like the aisles should be overflowing with the good stuff and the fat, sugar, and salt filled items should be the ones that you have to hunt to find. When did grocery stores change into aisles and aisles of unhealthy traps so creatively wrapped? Do you think if we did some research we would find that the same parent companies that own the diet food lines also own the snack-cake lines?

So, as I know I've read time and time again, I shopped the outside of the store. The cheese corner first, adding low-fat ricotta cheese to my cart. Then after grabbing that laundry detergent and those canned beans and chicken broth, I made it to the produce section. Onion, potatoes, celery, carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, ginger, and spinach looked good. Next on to the seafood and meat corner. Shrimp and ground turkey this week.

Although there is good stuff to be found, it can be very overwhelming walking up and down those aisles trying to find it amongst the rest.

    Maybe we ought to print out this blog and send it to the CEOs of the major grocery chains. We could then boycott the chains that constantly feature junk food in their ads. Enought people doing this and you might see some changes in grocery 'specials'. Money talks and we are the ones spending the money.

    It is horrible that they don't want us to eat real food anymore. So many additives and preservatives.

During a recent trip I noticed portion sizes are out of whack too. I got a snack pack of cheese and crackers and it was huge, 8 sandwiches which is 16 crackers and a dab of cheese between each. They called it one serving. (Augie and I split it and it was perfect). And the apple juice was large too. According to tables, one serving is 6 oz. They took a 12 oz. can and calmly listed it as one serving. If they keep supersizing things and not telling us, is it a wonder we gain? Even eating the right foods can be a problem if we routinely eat large portions.

    I agree with you completely. It is hard to make the choices that need to be made to make us feel good and be healthy. It is equally hard to figure out what those choices really are in the first place. I have found the only thing that works for me is to go shopping by myself when I have the time to make it adventure. I try new markets and try to make it fun. It sounds silly but without my husband along and by going to new stores where I don't know where anything is I tend to make different and better choices. I do like your idea of working the outside of the store. I never really thought about trying that. Perhaps this week!

  It's also discouraging that the weekly sale papers are filled with discounts on chips and soda, not the healthy foods. It's a lot less expensive to eat horribly, which is a shame.

    It definitely can be overwhelming. That's why I had to stop going to the grocery store without a list. That way I know what I am making for the week and can narrow down my selections much more quickly.

    Sounds like you are doing great! I hate going to the grocery store. I always end up being there for at leat an hour because I look at all the labels and compare prices. I'm a big coupon person too, so I'm the person that most people grumble about taking so long in line.

The holiday has gone smoothly. This year it so happened that everyone came (or are coming) around at a different times starting on Christmas Eve and continuing through until the 30th. Part of me wishes that everyone could be here at once, making sure everyone sees everyone, cutting down on the number of meals to prepare; but another part of me knows that smaller groups are a little easier to manage. emoticon

    I know what you mean! When I first started exercising (in my living room, sidestepping my kids), my boys would do anything in their power to get me to stop. They finally figured out that I was a much better mom when I got that time in. Don't give up on's when you give yourself that time that everything else in your life goes better!

    I sometimes forget the journal but every time I remember and use it, I feel so much better. Do you use the electric one with Sparks or a paper one?
