Yes, on an elliptical, and not on a threadmill... This is my new exercise. Today in the last 10 minutes, my heart rate was around 170bpm, and did not feel any discomfort. Mind you, I am 42, and thus my max. heart rate (MHR) is 178bpm. So that means I exercised in the last 10 minutes at 96% of my MHR. This is a first for me. According to

ess_articles.asp?id=1044
I have even exceeded the "advanced or high fitness level". Over 55 minutes, my average heart rate was 150bpm (84% of my MHR, at the upper end of the "advanced or high fitness level").
So how do I run on an elliptical? I set the program to its maximum setting, and I just start running; I don't pull at the handles, my arms do the swinging motion of a run. In the beginning the resistance is set to 10/14, but in 5 minutes it becomes 11/14, in another 5 minutes it becomes 12/14, and in yet another 5 minutes it becomes 13/14. Finally, starting from 20th minute, the resistance becomes the max. possible on that machine, 14/14. At 20th minute, I had just passed the 150bpm.
How does it feel? Pretty challenging. It is like running in swamp. Your feet are so heavy, and it gets worse and worse... But I needed that challenge. Good for me!
