Enjoying the Outdoors

Saturday, January 09, 2010

My cabin fever got the best of me yesterday and I winterized myself and braved the 17 degree temps. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. After I got outside I decided I liked it and stayed there for about an hour. I walked my 4/5 mile long path through the woods which was fun. It was very quiet except for the occasional chirring of a woodpecker and the wind rustling dead leaves still clinging to their branches. I didn't see any animals but could see their footprints where they had been walking in the snow - deer, dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels. Sometimes I was the first one to use certain parts of the path but usually an animal had beaten me to it. In some areas a lot of animals had congregated so I wondered what the attraction was. Party!! LOL. Every once in a while there was a hole dug in this snow about the size of a large cantaloupe or basketball by some animal digging up some food. I usually see some kind of droppings but yesterday there were none so I assume that they are not finding much to eat. I left some food out for them by the woodpile. They also get into the compost scraps I put in the bin.

The most striking thing about being outside in the winter is how the cardinals look against the dreary landscape. We have a lot of brush on our property so we have a lot of cardinals who live here and they are always at the feeders. Yesterday there was about 20 of them surrounding the feeders. Some birds like chickadees, titmice, and finches will get a seed and leave but the cardinals like to stay. The males spend too much time challenging each other when they should be eating.

I cleaned the snow off the outdoor furniture and the swings and enjoyed swinging for a while. It was a nice day.

Man that is one thing I really miss about Southern Illinois are all the cool birds. In central Illinois we have the most uninteresting birds. I very rarely see cardinals here. But down there they seem like they are everywhere. Also the mockingbirds, I miss southern illinois. Thats nice to you used to cold and went for a walk. Sounded like very calming to go out by yourself.

You sound so much like me.

I love the outdoors and I love the peaceful walks too.

I feed my birds every day and the cardinals are of course my favorite especially when there is snow as they are absolutely beautiful.

Your area where you live would be just what I wish for.

I love the animals and would love being able to set out and watch them.

I have so many hummers in the spring and summer and I have lots of squirrels but then again that's about it since I live in town.

I grew up in the country on a farm and we use to have deer come right up to the living room window once in a while and the beauty of that I sure do miss.

I loved reading this blog.. It makes me want to escape from here and go somewhere where I can enjoy the outside more HOWEVER lol it's only 1 degree this am so perhaps I need to dream for now and wait for summer... you think? lol

Have a wonderful day!

Sandy

There is nothing like a splash of red color when a cardinal sits on the branches outside our windows. I think they are just beautiful. Your surroundings sound calming and serene. I feel like my heart rate lowered just reading your blog.

You live in an extraordinary place. I'm glad you got to enjoy it yesterday. I can imagine how pretty the cardinals look, such a bright red. I haven't seen any where we are. My DH doesn't like me feeding the birds because it attracts mice. So I throw the seed over the fence to make sure they hang around...it works, hehe.

Whose Woods These Are..........

Friday, January 08, 2010

Today I have been lot more productive than yesterday thus far.

It was 5 degrees this morning with a wind chill of -15. Why can't we have this wind in the summer when the humidly is sky high and any breeze would be welcome?! LOL. The wind chill was -24 the other day so at least that is improving. Our snow won't melt off until next week when it gets above freezing. I'm looking forward to that. It will seem like a heat wave to me.

The county and city schools are closed due to the temps. We can stay home today and this weekend but I must admit that staying home without being able to get outside much is not fun.

Normally I love doing my chores outside but not in this bitter cold. I just rush through them as quickly as possible.

The birds are going wild at our feeder. Even Wrenster is eating suet today. Lots of woodpeckers, chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, goldfinches, purple finches, juncos, white throated sparrows, etc.

It is so cold, even in the house, so I am making some vegetable beef barley soup.

I am going to do some exercise.

Have a great day,

Here It Comes.

Wednesday, January 06, 2010

My internet is working today, for a while at least. It probably won't tomorrow with the winter weather advisory and snow storm coming. We are expecting 5 inches here. I hope they are wrong. This will be our first real snow of the year.

I got all my errands and shopping done yesterday. If I forgot anything my husband has to drive by a grocery store on his way home from work and he can get it. If we get the big snow I may be stuck for a while.

I am eating on plan and getting my exercise in. I hope to continue this. I have yet to find time to set any goals but have read a lot of other people's goals on the blogs and they have helped me at least get some ideas for mine. If I'm snowed in I will have more time.
