Quarantine - LOL

Thursday, May 03, 2012

My son is still sicker than a dog. He was up all night and I had to get up to calm him down. He is very irritable. At least he did not end up at the doctor's office again today and he rested for longer periods. The antivirals, steroids, and antibiotics seem to be helping some. I am pushing him to eat and drink. He is having some vivid daydreams that frighten him as he thinks they are hallucinations. They are the result of the fever, lack of sleep, meds, etc. His temp is actually better today.

In answer to questions, he has never had chicken pox before nor the vaccine. They did not offer it when he was young. I wanted him to get the vaccine but his doctor was not eager for him to as he has some pre-existing medical problems. Both his dad and I had chicken pox as children but the exposure makes us susceptible for shingles or a subclinical case of chicken pox. It is so contagious that everyone he has come in contact with has already gotten a dose of it. The incubation period is around 2 weeks. He will be infectious until he stop getting new pox and they dry up.

His dad and I have taken over all of his chores at home so we are both ready to drop. So my day was nothing but work taking care of him. I managed to fix a decent breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He is not in the mood to eat. I unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher. I spot cleaned the cages. I took out the compost and fed the wildlife. I cleaned the porches/patios/steps/pavers, swept the floors, vacuumed, shook out the rugs, emptied the waste cans. I did 11 loads of laundry in the pole barn. My hubby helped me carry in the last 2 loads when he got home from work - stated washing at 7:30 in the morning and got the last load washed at 6:30 P.M. and the last load dried at 10 but I was too tired to fold it. We will have a lot of laundry with him being sick.

Well. I'm exhausted. Hubby and I need to get some sleep while we can in case he is up all night again.

Wishing your son a speedy recovery. I hope that your stamina holds out. You are amazing! You do so much! I am envious.
My Dad has shingles. He has had them for over a year. It is hard for him to fight infection since he is working on managing his leukemia situation. He does well but it can be overwhelming at times.
Hope you have an easier day tomorrow. Maybe you will get some reprieve from enjoying your beautiful natural setting. Hope so!
Hope those baby bunnies are doing well, btw.

Hope all returns to normal soon. You've had your share of crap in your life for quite a few years. Poor son is miserable. All 4 of my kids had chicken pox at the same time. I got shingles vaccine today with a dpt. Since shingles is a live vaccine, you can get shingles. My friend has it now. If you get to the doctor's office within 24 hours, there's a Rx to head it off.

Wishing you the best and crossing my fingers that you don't get really sick. I've had shingles several times, and they're miserable but my bouts were relatively light. From what I understand (and this is from the "natural" sources) the vaccine really doesn't do any good. I'm a little confused as to how this works when you're around someone with chicken pox. If you've had chicken pox, it means you're likely to get shingles? I thought that came from its lying dormant in your body. Need to look that up...but anyway, sending good thoughts your way.

Yes get some rest , that's all you need to get over tired it sounds like you are already not feeling well either. I forgot you can still get a second case of chicken pox. I wasn't given anti virals when I had it I dont even know if they were that common. My GP wanted to admit me to a hospital to get them and I was told by the doctor there that I couldn't leave the room if I was admitted because of his precious AIDS patients. What a JERK. Needless to say I went home.

    holy mackeral....
hope you get some rest for sure tonight..i have the unfortunate problem of shingles as a result of my chicken pox..and my son had it three times..all confirmed by the doc before the vaccines..first one side and then the other side and then all over his head and neck..that was a treat for sure..me ..my shingles present on my scalp and my hair gets real thin and i have headaches because of course it hurts to touch it..the doc had a hard time believing that until the dermatologist con firmed it and it's rare on the head lol and my son was hospitalized with mumps even after the vaccine..he was there for several weeks
while they tried to contain it..fortunately it did not sterilize him as it is apt to do but they he had a hard time for two weeks
it's hard these diseases for sure and they are out there waiting for us to fall into their holes for sure rest and try to keep up but if you overdo it well hire some friend to come and get your laundry and take it home and do it or to the laundromat..take care of yourself also because you are barely over the mrsa

The Pox

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

I don't have much time to talk. I spent the day trying to get some meals fixed and my chores done in between taking care of my son. He's very sick. The high doses of antibiotics didn't work. He got up this morning and was completely covered in pustules, especially his face, scalp, and trunk but it has progressed to his extremities as well. He does not have an inch on his upper body that is not covered. I called the doctor and they had me bring him in right away. I was not leaving until I had a diagnosis. They were pretty shook up when they saw him as he had deteriorated so much since yesterday. They tried to get him an immediate walk-in referral to a dermatologist. The dermatologist won't be in until Friday due to a death in the family. My son is in a lot of pain and is itching at the same time. His lymph nodes are swollen, he is febrile, anorexic, irritable, has a headache. The dizziness is better. I told the doctor I thought he had chicken pox and he started to examine him and has decided that he thinks I may be right. My son is so bad he had to put him on antivirals and on steroids. He got 2 injections in the office. We picked up his prescription and some things from the grocery store he wanted. If he gets any worse he will have to be hospitalized so if you don't hear from me you will know what is going on. The doctor said that hubby and I are infected with chicken pox as well and should be on quarantine. I'm not feeling real well so I'm sure he's right. Kind of hard to be on quarantine when hubby has to go to work but I will stay home. So I can't get my errands or shopping done this week.

Whoa! Chicken pox in adulthood is serious business. Thank God you know what you're doing and could tell the doctor what's wrong! Geez. I was just about to say "shingles" when you said "chicken pox." So you and Benny didn't have the pox as kids? Or did the doc mean that, because you're exposed, you're carriers and could infect, like, a pregnant woman or something? My God. As if you guys haven't had enough trials, now the pox as well?

My daughter got an infected pock on her side when she was in kindergarten and ended up in the hospital for nearly a week on IV. While she was there, a teenager was in for the same thing because of an infected pock on his foot, which is more serious. If one of Ian's pox starts to look inflamed or black ... but never mind, you were a nurse!

You're in my prayers.

Back To Nursing

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

I lost my blog last night when my computer froze up. It's been a long time since that has happened and it's very irritating. I had backed part of it up previously so at least I didn't have to start from scratch today.

Last Saturday there was a horrible sight on the interstate. Traffic was at a standstill for 10 miles and people were standing outside of their cars. A semi's brakes caught on fire and burnt the trailer to a crisp, warping it and making it look like a tin can that had been in a trash compactor. There were tons of police, rescue vehicles, and a fire truck on hand.

There certainly are a lot of bunnies this year. I like bunnies. It will take a while for the predators to weed them out. My MIL has some tiny day old bunnies at her house. My hubby found the nest when he was weeding. They were so cute, Their ears were the size of the end of a tine on a fork. We didn't touch them as we did not want the mother to abandon them. A buzzard was on our road last night eating a bunny that had been hit by a car. Buzzards have huge gross poop. Ugh!!

I have seen some pregnant deer laying around the yard. It is about time for them to deliver.

I had to make a turtle rescue yesterday - a small one on the Dix-Texico blacktop. If you are not familiar with the term blacktop that is what they refer to as a secondary road using asphalt in my area. Today I had to rescue a water turtle and a box turtle.

We have been getting our walks in every day again and I am getting my steps in on most days. Sometimes I'm getting a lot, like yesterday - 18463. If I would eat right that many steps would cause me to lose weight. I like my new pedometer my son bought me for Mother's Day. It's supposed to be more accurate. It's smaller too.

I slept in a little today and a lot Sunday and it felt good. I still didn't want to get up at 8:30 A.M. Sunday though. LOL. I'm getting so lazy lately.

It has been cloudy and warm again. It rained yesterday and we just had a thunderstorm go through this morning. It will be hot the rest of this week.

I decided it was a good time to plant my herb transplants in my herb garden on Sunday. My husband has lost my garden trowel or whatever you call it so it was challenging. I don't like him using my things because he never puts them away where they belong. Hisssssssssssss! Rattle. LOL. He was a good boy though and mowed a lot of the yard on Sunday.

I filled the bird feeder on Sunday. The indigo buntings are back and I would like to attract some to the feeder. I need to get some new seeds. I had a male and female rose-breasted grosbeak at my feeder today.

I had to talk my son into going to the doctor today. He is really sick. He has rash on his face and trunk, hip pain, dizziness, headache, fever, sweating, etc. The other assistant manager watched the store while he went to the doctor. He has a sinus infection, inner ear infection, severe allergies, and a skin infection. So his boss is going to work for him tomorrow and give him the day off. I had to go to town to take him his prescription and something to drink.

Love to hear about your critters. We have not seen pregnant deer yet, but tis the season. It was amazing to see the number of deer last year that had twins. Bunnies are out and about here. So is the fox which is a bit scary.

Love all the wildlife reports! We have vultures around here, but I can't say I've ever seen their poop. I've just seen them at work on carcasses or on top of dead trees, looking all ... vulturey. I don't hold their ugliness against them, though. They serve a function.

I was just wondering this morning where the bunnies were , and then I saw a nice fat one on a nearby lawn.

We had two yellow-crested night herons in our yard this morning--a little change of pace from the woodpeckers, mockingbirds, mourning doves, and cardinals.

Poor Ian! He gets MRSA, too, doesn't he?

Now if I could get rid of this nasty cough in the morning I would feel good, but really tired of starting the day with coughing so hard that I get a headache and then blowing my nose constantly. Takes about an hr or so then not too bad for rest of the day.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like spring has definitely arrived with all those pregnant animals and babies!!! Sounds like you're doing fairly well. I can't believe Ian is on his feet with all of that!!! Gonna take longer than a day to feel better from all that!!! Hope he feels better soon!

My, you've been busy, as usual! Sending out healing thoughts for your son. I need to spend more time observing the wildlife around here. Strange that I haven't seen one rabbit on the property since I've been here. I wouldn't think cats would keep them away.

All those critters! I am envious, but I do enjoy reading about it and picturing what it must be like to live in your corner of the world, it must be pretty wonderful!
Sorry to hear about your son, it sounds like he just got caught in a whole bunch of health issues that hit him all at once. Hope he gets to feeling better real soon!
I am glad that you are getting some extra rest, it will help with all that is going on with you and the hubby.
You have a good week and let us know when the baby deer get here!

emoticonYou have had quite a Day!! Glad that you rescued the Turtles! I love Bird Watching, too. A few years ago I worked for a man who had a wild Mockingbird that would - occasionally - fly down to you and take raisins out of your hand. He kept Bird Feeders all around his yard.
emoticonPraying that the Medicine works quickly and that your Son gets well soon.

Interesting blog. The bunny part reminded me of when I was a kid and we found a nest and took all the bunnies out and played with them and rounded them up and put them back in each time until one time they all ran off in opposite directions. We were sad when that happened. Looking back, I guess the mother didn't abandon them because they were there for many days. Or maybe she did, who knows. As kids we didn't know any better.

Hope your son gets to feeling better.

What an interesting and varied life you lead! I live in Australia, so I can only imagine some of the sights you describe. I would love to see some photos!

All the best for your son. He certainly sounds challenged at the moment!

Thank you for your wonderfully newsy blog! Have a wonderful rest-of-your-week!
