Mixed Up Hump Day

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

This morning I got up early at 6 A.M. because I had an appointment at the Webster Grove Animal Hospital in Webster Grove, Missouri to take two of my chinchillas to have their teeth worked on. Blocker has to have her molars trimmed and has to be anesthetized to have it done. Bun needs her incisors trimmed. I got my son up early so that he could help me get their/my water, snacks, papers, loaded in the car plus both of them coaxed into their pet carriers and into the car. No small feat. I always leave an hour early as I never know what the traffic will be like or if there will be delays from wrecks and such. I had just gotten the car loaded and was ready to leave when the phone rang. It was the animal hospital calling to cancel my appointment. The vet has a sick child and they wanted me to come in at 5. I did that before and I am NEVER driving in St. Louis again in rush hour after dark so I told them no. They seemed pretty shocked but, like I told them, I have a 2 hours drive over there and 2 hours back plus the waiting time which can be extensive and am not wanting to do this at night again like the last time I did it. That is why I make appointments so I don't have to risk my life to get my pets taken care of. So I am back to square one.

My son was supposed to work from 12 until 7 tonight. He seldom gets to work days any more unless it's Sunday and his place of business only work days on Sunday. LOL. He works one other day a week. He loves his job though and has a great boss. The other assistant manager had an emergency so he didn't get off at 7. He just called and will be working overtime and has to be back tomorrow to open. So he is working a 9.5 hour day with less than 12 hours off. They don't get paid for working overtime. When I was head nurse I encountered people who always had emergencies when they worked the weekends or late shifts and I always wonder when I hear this happening if it isn't the same deal. Suspicious minds. LOL. Of course I fired these people. Yep, I was that kind of boss.

Hubby is still working hard on getting the estate settled and is getting a lot done. We can't wait for this to be over with and to say good bye to a bunch of negative whiny people. There are some people you can never please no matter what you do for them and my policy is to weed them out of my life ASAP. We are blessed to have a lot of support from my family, my online friends, our local friends, our MIL's friends and neighbors, and our attorney and his staff. They have been our port in a storm.

When I had my business here they spelled out that over time was paid after 40 hours. Everyone had to be given a 15 minute break after 4 hours 6 Hours was 30 minutes and 8 hours break was one hour. I kind of thought it was universal.
I had that posted on the wall of the shop.
Too bad the vet cancelled knowing where you were coming from, I hope he schedules you soon. Tough "M".
Good news is Hubby is doing a lot more of this, it helps take some of the burden off you. HUGS Pat in Maine.

I am glad you were that kind of boss-I worked in a nursing home while I was in college-even though my major was art. I really liked my job and in the summer worked full time.
We had a great super of the nurses and nurses aides ... Well..full time would sometimes end up 2 weeks in a row because of people and their emergencies- she ended up firing them and would also stop me from working too many days in a row because I would get burnt out.
She also fired those awful people would try to get away with not washing patients -for ex. those in later stages of alzheimers ..oh the stories...
and good for you for not leaving later on. The only way they could justify that is if they were willing to give you the appt. for free emoticon

Thank goodness you got the call from the vet's call before you left! It is a shame that your son needs to work extra shifts or any overtime without pay - that seems wrong. It's good that he likes his boss. Maybe the boss can ensure that the staff respects the schedule.

How irritating to be ready to go and then get canceled!! Too bad for babies but I think you made a good decision to not go late afternoon. My vet is now sending me a reminder card that my dogs need their "mature wellness check". What this really means is that he wants me to bring my dogs in twice a year and give a lot of money to the vet. No way!!! I barely have yearly exams--my dogs sure as heck don't twice yearly. Actually, my exam probably costs less than theirs! LOL
I can't believe Ian doesn't get paid overtime! That does not seem fair at all!! At least he likes his job and boss. That is a good thing.
OMG!!! This estate business drags on forever. I don't know how you guys are still hanging in there with it. Hopefully, there's a light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Sounds frustrating, I'm glad you hadn't already left for the vet. I agree, making an appointment is so you can schedule a time that works for you. You were smart not to take the later time especially given the long drive. I hope you were able to get rescheduled. Chinchillas are certainly high maintainence, it's good they are so cute!

    A. Yes, I definitely think people have the tendency to have "emergencies" on the weekends! Even with over-achievers like vet students, it amazes me how people are ok with screwing other people over...
B. I am so, so sorry about your vet. I'm sure I'll face this problem one day with having sick kids, but I'd like to think I'd do everything in my power to see patients who come from far away. In fact, even when the vet school closed suddenly do to the "possibility" of a snow-storm, we didn't cancel on our patients. We called them and gave them the choice. Some people were already on their way from hours away and we happily saw them. I'd hope that if I knew a patient was coming in from 2 hours away, I'd find a way to see them, even if the "locals" had to reschedule...But who knows...maybe this vet had no choice.

Boo. Sorry about the kiddos :(

Non Fat Tuesday

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

I had another killer day.

It was really cloudy today for much of the day. It is starting to warm up again and is really nice but I'm so busy I have no time to enjoy it. LOL.

Today I made my grocery list and headed out to do errands. I didn't have as many places to go this week so it was easier. I had some places on my list in areas that I don't always go to and discovered that a lot of small businesses that have been in my area for years are now out of business. I never noticed how much things have changed. One place which is now gone was a used furniture store and is now a children's center. Another place which used to be a multigenerational grocery store is now a youth center. Some places, like a small bar, are now empty parking lots. An antique store is empty. A book store is closed. A beauty shop the same. There are a lot of empty buildings. Empty malls. As people exit Illinois so do jobs and businesses. They are replaced by law offices and pawn stores. Ugh.

Today I went to the post office, newspaper office, library, bank, Aldis, Kroger, Sears, and Wal-mart. I finally bought a new pair of New Balance tennis shoes. I don't like them as well as my old ones but had no choice. I made it home before 2 and my son helped me put up the groceries. I got to finally eat lunch at 2:30 P.M. And then it was time to start supper.

Baby was patiently waiting for her meal today. She got some extra goodies - some chicken.

Hubby and I went for another walk. An owl is hunting down by the road every day. So cool!!

I'm getting my exercise in and eating okay.

Where are the people buying stuff? I can see buying only necessity but geez :(
I am so pleas that you and hubby walk together! I wish I had someone to walk with me! For now I am on my own! a treadmill just isn't the same! no fresh air or vitamin D for one thing! have fun walking (you will break in the new shoes in no time) emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

You got a lot done! We finally got to go grocery shopping as well (we hadn't been in two weeks). We had to do all the shopping after our hospital visit with John, which meant we didn't start shopping until 6:30 p.m. We went to Costco, bought what we could and came home.

Yeah they do that all the time with work shoes for me any ways (there is a chain in Canada called "Mark's Work Wear House" and it feels like every year if I found a pair I liked last year the sales person will say "oh those got discontinued" GRRRR. I would buy Doc Martins but they aren't MADE IN ENGLAND anymore and also I found out the PVA soles turn to GLASS in the cold!!! Not good for Canada in the winter!! Have a happy Ash Wednesday.

I noticed the same thing when I went home to Pennsylvania this past weekend. Many stores were closed, buildings torn down, etc... Johnstown was a once a booming steel town which is sadly past it's prime with little employment opportunity. Most kids end up moving to find jobs. Sad.

It is going to be sunny and almost 60 here today! I plan to get out and enjoy it.

Have a great day!

We had a great Fat tuesday with very little fat too.
I had a meeting for our hospital. They served us dinner, I ate before I went. They had 4 huge pizza boxes, I lifted the lid and the grease reflected my face UGH.
DH foot was hurting anf he does not have a lot of in put in to this group. It is our family Medicine practice and it is a teaching facility. I have been a patient here for over 25 years so I have seen many changes. I was the only patient there. There was the Practice manager, A couple of RN.s a social worker and a Dr.They did have a salad and lots of high calorie baked goodies too. They insist on having it after work. When I declined food they told me the practice pays for it. Needless to say, Granny will be asking for healthier food next time. I was glad none of the other patients were there. There has to be a better way than pizza. They were obviously ready to eat anything it makes a very long day for them. There has to be a better way for medical professionals to eat.HUGS Pat in Maine.

Sounds like a good day! As we have traveled we have also noticed small towns that are disappearing and even some larger that have so many buildings sitting empty. The economy has taken its toll on these small businesses. My dad lived in a small town where nothing was left but parking lots, pawn shops and a couple banks. SAD!
I did an observation of my student teacher, touched up some paint on hallway, worked on downloading some pix. Very quiet day! Today: watch grandson, get a haircut (and color the gray), walk my son's dog. He has class this evening and the girlfriend is coaching lacrosse. His dog is so strong (but sweet, sweet, sweet) that he takes me on the walk!

A Quiet Holiday

Monday, February 20, 2012

Today was President's day and I was glad I didn't have to go anywhere as this will be a busy week. It seems like all my weeks are busy and I am kind of tired of it but there is a plan for my life and my plan right now is to work hard for great rewards in the future. I'm one of those people who seems to stumble upon work. If I don't fine it, it finds me.

I am looking forward to having some free time soon to explore what I need to do about my diet. Today I ate okay but I had tomato sauce which tore up my stomach.

I got my outdoor chores done. Baby was waiting for me. LOL.

Hubby and I went for a walk after he got off work. I am loving the longer days!!

The Weekends Go By Too Fast

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Yesterday we slept in and when I got up I had to rush around to make breakfast and lunch as my son had to leave at 12:15 to go to work. Hubby cleaned the pet cages and gave the chinchillas a snack.

Hubby and I got ready and left at the same time my son did to go to my MIL's house to check on it.

After that we went and visited with my MIL's friend and had apple caramel tea, spiced nuts, and spice cake. I ate a sliver.

We then went to Best Buy and looked at washers and dryers yet again. Hubby and I end up just as confused as ever when we get done. LOL.

Then it was on to Barnes and Noble to look for some books. He wanted books about tea making and they had none. I wanted certain books about diet and didn't find much either but I bought 3 books which were way overpriced. I miss Borders.

We got home after dark.

Today started as a repeat of yesterday. After my son left for work we went for a long hike and another later in the day. The animals all think it's spring. The sun was out and the birds were singing. We saw lots of deer and robins. And plenty of squirrels. The raccoons, skunks, possums are all back. The shrubs are budding out. The perennials are up. I am loving this and hope it stays this way.

Hubby took a 2 hour nap with Reekie.
