Ice Road Walkers

Friday, December 17, 2010

Hubby and the next door neighbor both tried to get to work again today. The same pile of abandoned cars was still there in the exact same places. So hubby and the neighbor both left and made it a quarter mile and came straight back home, sliding the entire way. LOL. Hubby took the FX4 but on ice the brakes didn't work. Later in the afternoon the sun came out intermittently and it got up to 31 degrees and melted some of the ice. Two of the vehicles stranded on the road were able to get out and the neighbors on the other side got out.

We went for 2 ice walks today. Saw Baby sitting in the snow.

We talked to Hondo's owner and he theorizes that Hondo was probably hit by a car and went off and died. I guess we could make hypotheses forever about what happened to him. But it appears he is gone. I will continue to look for him though as the weather allows. I intend to find him one way or another.

I called the neighbor widow lady to check on her today. She was so thrilled. We talked a long time. She told me about what has been going on in the neighborhood. She owns the most land in this area.Lots of people have been trespassing on her property and she asked us to check on her property, part of which connects to ours.

Baby was barking again tonight and there were some strange sounds outside. I called hubby out to hear them but he could not identify them.

North pole is right! Don't know how ya do it. I packed up everything headed south with my dog, a suitcase and my sewing machine.... left NY a few years after colleging at Syracuse U. A coupla decades of that was all I could stand.

Wonder if those strange sounds were the geese?

We woke up to snow this morning. I was out and about yesterday. No ice. There will be when this melts. I use shoe chains when it's icy out. Dh just makes snow angels. He has shoe chains, but hasn't put them on. It is much safer.

Do you use a traction device when you walk outside on ice? How sad about Hondo. Closure would be good even if it is sad news. emoticon We did not get any more ice, thankfully. The snow we have is enough.

I loved the title of your blog!! I keep picturing that pile of abandoned cars--isn't it amazing how Mother Nature can still bring us to our knees and render us helpless when she wants to?

What did the noise sound like? Animal? Mechanical? Rumbling of an earthquake? emoticon

I'm glad you got to talk with your neighbor; she must be lonesome. There's always somebody in the neighborhood who knows EVERYTHING that's going on, so it's good to get acquainted with them. It kind of bothers me, too, though, because I'm a private person in general. I wouldn't want everybody to know, for instance, that I'd up and left my wife of 30 years for a chickie in Florida (and then came back with tail between legs) or that I'd tried to blow my head off and just left myself without a jaw. Both of these things have been the talk of our neighborhood--the latter within the past week!

What's the deal with this trespassing, though? I guess you folks have enough land that people can creep about and cross boundaries easily. Was it hunters or just weird strangers, do you think?

Please give Baby extra attention when you see her as I suspect she is "grieving" in her dog fashion.

We're The New North Pole!!

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Welp, the ice storm came and NOAA was wrong. The rotten turds. LOL. We were supposed to get a little ice but our county got the worst of it. A glaze of ice. Hubby tried to go to work this morning and made it a quarter of a mile from home and could not get up the hill. He returned and in the mean time the neighbor left trying to take the same southern route to town too. Hubby was going to try to take my vehicle as I have new tires but in the mean time the neighbor returned as the south road was blocked. We walked down the road to see if the other roads were open and there was a small black car blocking the north route, a white truck blocking the east route, and a blue truck, red truck, and beige van blocking the west route. So he gave up and called his boss. No one had made it to work yet. Two employees (the bosses son/plant manager and the salesman) called and were stuck on the road on the way there. So not sure if anyone made it to work or not. It did not get above freezing and is supposed to get really cold.

I ended up falling on the ice and bruised both hands, my left elbow, and who knows what else. But no broken bones. YEAH!! Hubby is not feeling well.

Hubby worked on the Maytag since he was already home and he may have it fixed but wants me to wait until he is home to do clothes. It will be really slick trying to get the clothes to the pole barn anyway so I don't have any choice but to wait.

We had a mockingbird at our feeder today. They are so cool.

No Hondo.

I had 84 emails left and got rid of 87 on Truesday.
On Wednesday I had 85 left and got rid of 110.

So if you fell and are now the new North Pole, and you pick yourself up and dance, does that make you a fallen woman and a pole dancer?

: )

Sure I hope you're laughing and not throwing snowballs in my general direction!

Not to be a copy cat, but I fell off the ladder while cleaning out my gutters a coupla days ago. (okay there's some material for you to work with... ha)

Actually the ladder chose to fall as I was descending and I just kinda went with it before flinging myself free before it hit the ground, or should I say fell into the rose bush. I earned a nice scraped ankle and a bruise on my already bruised foot & toe, an injury earned earlier this week when I dropped the huge metal door knob when fixing the lock. This being the same foot which just coincidentally happens to sport a permanent mat of a jillion tiny red and blue varicose veins.

So yesterday at Sprouts I picked up some Arnica blossoms for tea. Its suppose to help with the cuts and bruises. But a quick look at wiki revealed that the active ingredient, helenalin, is highly toxic. Hmmm.

I guess even water is toxic if its over your head and you can't swim. So we'll see if it heals me faster than it kills me. If Pointy's listening, he's prolly planning a delayed onset allergic reaction to the arnica. yeesh. Wattaguy! ha

Heal fast and well... ttay warm while you're doin it!

The ice is the worst. I have shoe chains. They are in the back of our car. I put our boots back in the shed. We're suppose to get 2-3 inches of snow by tomorrow morning.

I'm afraid Hondo is probably a goner after this long. Poor baby. My gf has a stray at her house. She's been trying to get her into a sheltered place with a doghouse and blanket, but the dog is too afraid yet. The dog has been eating though. They have 7 cats that were all strays, so I don't know how a dog would get along.

I hope you don't stay iced in too long. Crossing the ice with a load of laundry to the pole barn does NOT sound like fun, but it sounds like it might be necessary, and I hate that for you!

Now I'm afraid that I'm mad at your neighbors for being so careless with their dogs. But on the other hand, it sounds as if Hondo enjoyed his freedom.

Our place is probably 2000 sq ft max, counting the sunroom which we can't really use in the winter because it's so unheated. So, close to the same size, I think!

mockingbird. I don't think I've ever heard one.

Let's hope that the Maytag gets fixed properly and
don't even think of going out in the ice to the barn.

it may bring flash flooding as well, so no one wins.

The Ice Storm Cometh

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Today was cold and gloomy. The freezing rain didn't start until late in the evening around 8:30 though. I was able to slide to the post office and get my mail. So I got to talk to my friend and the rural mail carrier who had not left yet. A bob cat has been seen in the area. Not good.

Hubby's needs to go to work because he has a couple of work deadlines. I don't want him risking his life or wrecking our vehicle and/or someone else's vehicle so I will be worried tomorrow.

I saw a bunch of deer in the yard yesterday and today - around 8.

The Quiet Before The Storm

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

We are in between winter storms so today I went to town to do my errands. The secondary roads are still pretty slick. The county roads not too bad and the state and interstate highways are good. That will all change tomorrow. This is Illinois. LOL.

I went to the post office and talked with my girlfriend. Her youngest son's fiancée is finally starting to respond to the radiation treatment and the lymphoma tumor is shrinking. If my washer motor is delivered to the post office while the roads are bad and I can't pick it up she will take it home She lives about a mile from me and I can pick it up there. It would save me from having to drive a couple of miles on ice. The mile to her house is the worst mile to drive as it is very hilly but it is a snow route so they do at least scrape it eventually.

I went to the newspaper office and told my friend there to notify me if anyone finds a lost dog.

I went to the bank, Aldis, Wal-Mart, and Kroger. I got my prescription refilled.

I came home and fed the wildlife, took out the compost, burned the trash and put all the groceries away.

Hondo's owner came home while I was outside and I asked him if Hondo had come home and he hasn't. He put an ad in the paper today. Thanks for your prayers about Hondo. Even if he is gone at least he will know he was loved.

emoticonI am trying to not worry about Hondo esp in that weather you're having. Can't believe we've been unscathed so far. It's early in the season yet, though. It was in the 50s today as I sat on the front porch and read some Christmas cards. I need to do mine. Time is flying.

I'm so glad the tx is working for your friend's son's fiance.

Sounds like a busy day. Hope you do get your motor soon. Sorry to hear about Hondo...but yes, he was loved...that's what we can do for our animals...just love them. Isn't that awesome...they need the one thing we can surely give. Hope your Thursday is a good one. We're expecting an overnight snow storm, too...but we'll see. Spark on! emoticon emoticon

I am hoping for his safe return too. (how sad) emoticon We are getting blasted with this storm too here in Ohio. These sub zero freezing days make walks outside interesting. I broke my ankle last year on the ice...looks like I am getting plenty of opportunity to deal with the fear of it this year. Keep us updated on the dog.

Our winter storms have been missing us, guess we just live right. The weather here is very hard to predict.

The vet idea is good. One of the dogs when I was a kidwas taken to the vet and patched up. We didn't think to go there and ask for 2 weeks. Maybe he will turn up soon.

I was so hoping that Hondo had come home.

We are hunkering down too - getting ready for the storm. Hope we don't get that freezing rain as they are predicting.

Hugs, Sunny

You might also call the local vets to see if Hondo has been dropped off there hurt. I am holding out hope for him here!

I hope you're not getting the ice. I've heard that we will get snow then ice. I'm sick of winter already and it hasn't officially started yet.

Take care! Stay warm!

Tears in my eyes about Hondo ...

One of our close friends, whose roughly 23yo daughter has had mysterious health problems practically ever since we've known her, just had a baseball-sized mass biopsied for Hodgkins lymphoma. We're alternately praying that's not what it is and hoping that she'll finally have some answers and be able to deal with it. This family has lately had to be more resilient than you'd believe, and this just seems like one more unfair thing to have to handle!

Oh so sad losing a dog and not knowing what happened.

M I do hope that motor arrives soon it certainly will help you
Lighten your load. There is never a good time to lose a washer but between the cold weather and the Christmas mail gets slower it has to be the worst time to have it happen. Do take care of yourself. Hugs Pat in Augusta Maine. Take Care !!!!

Short Update

Monday, December 13, 2010

School was canceled today. It was sunny but windy and only got up to 18. It will be even colder tonight.

My son and I went out to look for Hondo. We found some dog tracks and hope they are his but hubby said he saw Baby running around in our front yard by the road. Baby never leaves the yard without Hondo so I don't know if she is looking for him too or what. I hope he has been chasing girls and is back home now.

I got down to 143 emails yesterday and got rid of 97. Today I got rid of 250 and had 31 left.

I made some homemade vinaigrette, French dressing, slaw, to ham and beans and some corn muffins for the boys today. It was a good day to cook.
