Gaining or losing?

Have you ever had a week where you thought you were doing pretty well, only to find out on weigh-in day that you had actually gained? That's been my week. I was up 1.5 pounds despite more exercise than usual and I thought I was doing a better job on portions and snacking. This is nuts. My clothes are getting more uncomfortable. I guess I'll start tracking food again and see if that helps?

I bought a new Weber grill and we'll use it tonight for the first time. Our old grill became unusable with one intense hot spot in the middle and nothing anywhere else. It was like trying to cook with a flame-thrower, not too satisfactory. This is my attempt to improve the economy. I'm looking forward to grilled foods!

    Oh yeah, only too well 8-(. I don't know about you, but my ability to fool myself is quite boundless.

To be fair, the weather here has been hot and humid, and I am definitely retaining water. How are things by you?

    I know exactly how you feel. I don't even want to get on a scale right now.

Try not to be so hard on yourself, and yes tracking your food intake will help. (I should take my own advice)

Exercising

In response to my "human sponge" post, H. asked how my exercise regime was going. I was surprised last spring when Denise Austin was no longer available on Lifetime TV. I've been able to fill in my exercise time with some exercise shows on public television, but they are not as rigorous in the cardio sense that D.A. was. Luckily, I do still have some of the old "Daily Workout" shows on videotape, so I'll usually do one show when I wake up at 5:30 and then whatever public television is broadcasting at 6 a.m., which alternates between Classical Stretch and Body Electric. A couple of mornings a week, since it is so beautiful outside right now, I walk. That's what I did this morning and then did a bunch of crunches before hitting the shower.

Lately, I've been walking or biking to work a couple of days a week. I've also gotten to the point where I can bike comfortably for 3-4 miles, so Kate and I have been taking bike rides. Our town is ideal for this as it is pretty flat and there is a bike trail near the lake. So far this week, and it is Tuesday a.m., I've logged over 2.5 hours of exercise. We'll see if I can keep this up and if this does the trick on the scales for me!

Keep up the good work. Remember you are doing the best you can. Has it occurred to you that you are eating more calories because your body needs more nutrition with al this exercise? Maybe stocking up on fruit and veggies and protein will help?

Human sponge

Wow. I'm a human sponge, just sucking up calories all the time. I'm hovering in the high 180's, 10 pounds over where I should be and probably 20 pounds over where I want to be. Blah. I always have trouble with weight gain in the summer. I guess I need cold weather to shiver off the calories.

The kids are home and they want snack foods. If I don't buy them, they make them. Too many temptations around. Plus, I have more time to prepare food in the summer as most of my evening commitments go away for a few months. I'd do better with a bit more structure and discipline to my days.

I'll keep trying. It occurs to me I've not felt hungry all week, so that should be a clue there, eh?

    Sorry about the temptations, J! As to the calories, there is always the other side of the equation - what's happening in your exercise world? I know you lost your early morning workout lady, have you found something else to do instead?

Still fightin'

It hasn't been a particularly good week. I was up a couple of pounds again. Bleah. It seems like I'm always up a couple of pounds all summer long and then when cool weather hits those three-five pounds are gone again. Weird. I'd like to get to the point where I stay the same weight year-around if I'm not losing it.

I was sick Sunday night, so did the BRAT diet all day Monday. I ate a ton of rice that day. Everything is good again now, but the carbo-loading is showing up now.

I changed my weight ticker to reflect my REAL weight loss overall. I lost the first 30-ish pounds on my own before I found SP, so my weight ticker reflected my beginning SP weight.

    Interesting about the summer weight ... could it just be water retention due to heat and humidity? Would cutting back on salt help? Do your hands and feet swell?

Struggling

I haven't written much lately because I keep getting error messages every time I try to post a blog entry. By then I've written so much I don't have time to re-post.

Trying again....I'll keep it short.

I've been struggling. Last week I was up 5 pounds in one week. I had a flurry of baking and cooking last week, trying out new recipes, etc. Some of that gain was water retention from too much salt, but a good deal of it was plain ol' fat. I was down 3 pounds this week, so I'm making progress, but I'm still more than a pound over that number I never wanted to see again.
