Over 9 K steps today

Monday, February 24, 2014

I was up and out fairly early today as I had some things to take over to my daughter. With all the walking I did I've already logged over 9K steps today and will add a few more before I go to bed. I'm not sure about tomorrow or Wednesday since we're due rain and Wednesday is also supposed to be chilly. However, if it's not pouring rain and windy I will still get out both days and get some walking done, I've learned the Converse Walmart doesn't mind my pushing a shopping cart around even if I don't buy anything. Once I log at least 3 K steps I usually stop in McDonald's and have a glass of unsweetened tea before heading home. They are almost ready to open the new Walmart on Walzem Rd. just west of where Walzem jogs and Montgomery Dr. begins. I am so looking forward to it opening because it's about a mile from where I live which means I can walk there, and, since it's uphill just about all the way it will do more for me than if it were level or downhill. Not only that but there's almost no sidewalk so I'll be walking on uneven ground which is also better for me. I've also walked over 3K Aerobic steps today. Now I just need to get my eating under control. I'm aiming for having "refrigerator oatmeal" as it's called for breakfast now that it's warm in the mornings as it's good for me and seems to fill me up better than many things I eat. I've found several different versions that I like so I can fix something different for just about every day of the week if I want. For me breakfast is the most difficult meal because I have difficulty figuring out what I can eat that is not only healthy and low in fat and calories but is something I like.

Logged in my steps

Friday, February 21, 2014

I went onto my fitness tracker page and logged in my steps back through late January, I've still got some to add but decided to wait on doing it.

I've met or exceeded my goal of 5200 steps per day every day, except three, this month. Those three days were when the weather was too cold for me to get outside, my health comes first and that means staying in out of the nasty weather. I've walked a total of 121,893 steps in February for an average of 6094.65 steps per day, that's 894.65 steps over my daily goal. I'm sure that now that the weather is starting to warm up I'll easily be able to up my goal by at least 1000 steps a day if not more. emoticon

Back to the Y

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I hit the Walzem Family Y today as I need to get back to doing something more than just the walking I'm doing. I've got a list of about a dozen exercises, one of which was too painful for me to do, that I had to relearn to do on their machines. I also want to start going to their water fit classes and possibly also the water therapy classes. From their I hope to eventually be able to do the water aerobics classes. Is there anyone from here that takes any of these classes?
I won't be able to start them on a regular basis before next week as I've got an appointment for each of the next two days and I've also got a plumber coming either Thursday afternoon of Friday to do some work.
I am proud of me in that I am drinking my 8 glasses, or more, of water each day as I keep a quart bottle by my right elbow and I know I drink a minimum of two of them each day.
My walking has also picked up as I've already hit over 12,000 steps today and the day isn't over yet.

I have the rheumatologist's permission to exercise as long as it doesn't hurt, if it does then I don't do it. Also saw an orthopedic doctor who was with my rheumatologist and she told me I shouldn't have any trouble in the pool as it's actually good for the joints.

I've actually stayed with my 5am wakeup, in fact this morning I got up about 4:45am because I couldn't sleep. I'm late heading to bed but I'll survive and I'm actually enjoying my time more. I've got 11,614 steps on my pedometer today so getting up earlier is helping me with adding steps also. That works out to 5 miles, and 4847 of those steps were aerobic steps. emoticon

    emoticon on the steps!
I love aqua classes, they are best and so easy on the joints. The bonus is relaxing in the hot tub after! I have done the foam belt and exercising in the deep end as Janis has done, very enjoyable! Starting out slow is the best way to go about it! Getting help with the exercises to make sure they are safe for you is good to do as well.
Good luck with it all!

Good for you hitting 12K steps!

I belong to the Waltham Y (MA). I love water aerobics. I've taken various classes including deep water and Aqua Zumba. If they offer Arthritis water exercises, that might be a good place to start. Therapeutic and easier. My Y also has water walking. Anything in water is 9 times the resistance of doing it in air. I like to go alone, put on one of the foam belts and jog/bicycle/jumping jacks etc. in the deep end. I also do core moves such as "suntan superman" and do arm exercises with the styrofoam dumbells. Then hit the hot tub for about 5 min.

I also take Tai Chi classes there.

The staff should help you (by appointment) to get set up on the weight machines for your range of motion, starting weight for each machine, correct form, etc.

Enjoy!

Disappointed

Friday, December 27, 2013

I got an email about the little Spark pedometer or whatever you want to call it letting me know it's $10 off the normal price. I decided to check it out and was very disappointed in not only the price but what it does, the pedometer I got from the senior walking clinic at the VA hospital where I get my health care does just about the same things and it didn't cost me any money whatsoever. I guess Spark People is mainly designed for people who don't live on a fixed income as there's no way I can justify such a price just to be able to track my fitness minutes and have my pedometer automatically snyc to my computer, thanks but no thanks. I'm averaging about 7,000 steps a day and I've only been on the program I'm on for not quite 4 weeks. I think I'll do okay with what I've got as I try and up my steps 5% a day each week and so far I succeed most of the time. I've even mapped out a route in the trailer park I live in that I can walk with very little trouble, I can also change that up depending on the weather as only about half of it is paved so I don't walk on the unpaved part in bad weather, I get enough of that walking to and from the bus stop if I need to go some where, that's about 1/2 mile each way so I get in plenty of walking when I go out.

I like the fitbit because I can see the amount of steps I have on the face of it.

I'm here again

Saturday, December 07, 2013

emoticon I just realized I joined Spark People over two years ago and I still haven't reached my goal weight though I got down to within 15 pounds of that last fall when I got the flu, before I could get the shot, and was extremely sick for most of September and about a week in October. I don't think I've ever been that sick before, I lost over 21 pounds in about a month, but as is normal for me I gained that much and more back. I did get my shot this year and am so glad I did.

This past month I joined the walking program for seniors that is offered by the VA hospital here. I'm trying to walk a minimum of 5,200 steps a day and I'm doing that many and more provided the weather cooperates, which it isn't doing this weekend. I bundled up today and got in just over 4300 steps which is pretty good to my way of thinking as cold as it is as I did a fair amount of my walking outside. I'm not sure about tomorrow, if it doesn't rain I can and will get out but since I've got what's called a compromised immune system I won't go out in extremely bad weather. I guess I can always walk from my room to the back of the hall then turn around and walk to the kitchen and back several times, at least that will allow me to get a little exercise inside.

    HI!
Good to have you back. I'm sorry you got so sick last fall. I hope you are all recovered. It sounds like you have a good goal you are working on.
Take baby steps...soon you'll be at your goal weight.

    Hey there Sparky,
Saw you on the RAD feed...
Glad to hear you are hanging in there. Flu nearly got me at this time last year also and I am still trying to regain lost ground.
You hang in there! Sometimes those steps are pretty hard to come by. Even hallways count!
Sounds to me as if you are putting a lot into finding a way to make it all work. Good for you!
