My Mother in Law

Sunday, December 04, 2011

As some of you may know my 70 year old mother in law was diagonsed with ovarian cancer in September. After surgery the first week of October, things have not gone well. Three weeks in the hospital after the surgery, home less than a week, back to the hospital with an infectin, home for a week, back to the hostipal for another almost three weeks. Yesterday she was discharged and got home and fall in the driveway hitting her head. Back to the hospital after the several hours in the ER, back home at 11:30 last night. It has been a long road and it is starting take it's toll on me. My husband and his brothers can't seem to agree on anything. But she can barely walk and my father in law is in a boot for foot issues and not in good health. I love my in laws but I am at my whits end and just need to vent.

Feel free to vent all you need to. It sure helped me when I was caregiver to my Mom for many years and then my DH for several months last winter. Someone needs to step up and help to guide the family in making tough decisions. It may be you, or it may be someone not so emotionally involved if they can't agree on what to do. Maybe the social worker at the hospital or doctor or even pastor can be of help. This is a very trying time for you and your family. I will keep you in my prayers. ~Holly

Dear Halloween Candy

Wednesday, November 09, 2011

Dear Halloween Candy,

I know that we had a relationship in the past, but its time has come to end. It is time to move on. I know that you are lonely when the trick or treating was light this year because of the weather and you really helped my through the days without power, but this relationship is just not good for me. We need to find you a relationship that works for everyone. So I am shipping you off to someone who can handle you better.

Goodbye peanutbutter cups, goodbye nerds, goodbye taffy. TeddyGrams you can stay, but everyone else you are going to a better home before it is too late for me.

It's been good.

Well It's Been Awhile

Wednesday, October 05, 2011

As I was trying to catch up on my SP stuff, I realized that it has been awhile since I posted a blog. So here it goes my life for the last few months. I spent several weekends at the shore over the summer, made several trips to my parents to help take care of my Mom as she recovered from her lung being removed, and spent as much time as possible watching and attending Phillies games. I continued adjusting to my new position at work, which is a lot more work and time then I thought it would be. Everytime I think that I am catching up at work I find more that needs to be done. Being the Starfish Challenge Leader, continues to consume a lot of my SP time, but I love it. I also discovered Facebook games over the summer. In September, DH and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary with a trip to Cancun. All and all it has been a busy summer, to wrap it up we made one final trip to the shore this weekend, followed by a two day safety conference in Hershey.

So now the summer is over and fall has made it way in. I had a great time this summer, but unfortunately all the good times have led me to gain a few pounds. Now I need to figure out how to get back to where I was before my fun filled summer.

Goal #1: Track all my food again
Goal #2: Make better food choices, bye bye DD bagel for breakfast, while you are good and I can make you fit into my calorie count for the day, you are not the healthiest choice I can make.
Goal #3: Break out the Wii again. No more excuses. The weather is not too nice, I don't have too much to do. I can squeeze in a workout.
Goal #4: Switch back to water. Ice tea and lemonade I love you but I need to get back to water, rather than sugary drinks.
Goal#5: Catch up and stay caught. This maybe the hardest but hey I was there once, I can get there again.

Typing thing out helps me to get them straight in my head and focus. So they are typed, they are the rules!

Wow, you did have a very busy summer! Congrats on your 10th wedding anniversary and a great way to celebrate with your trip to Cancun! Hope your mom is doing well. I really have to do the same thing as you and get my priorities lined up again. Have had a tough time adjusting to my hectic school schedule, work and readjusting the girl's daycare schedules. Now I feel ready to jump in and get myself organized, including menu planning and scheduled workouts. Of course, once my nursing clinicals come in a month, that will throw my schedule all off again and I can start over. Thanks for sharing your goals, and giving up so much of your time to kick us in the butt to keep going! emoticon

Update on my Mom

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

This summer seems to be flying bye. I canít believe it is almost July already.

On Friday, my Mom had surgery. They removed about half of the right lung. The doctor said that everything went well. They donít feel the cancer has moved to the lymph nodes but they are waiting for the biopsies to come back before they say for sure. If it has not moved to the lymph nodes, they donít feel that she will need chemo. All in all, pretty good news. Minor scare on Saturday evening, she started have trouble breathing late in the afternoon, but the nurse wasnít overly concerned, so I started making the two hour drive home. I get about halfway and my Dad called to say that they were taking her back down to surgery to remove fluid and possibly insert a breathing tube. Well I turned around and headed back to the hospital. Here some mucus was blocking the entrance to the lung causing the fluid to backup and she could not breath deep enough to cough it out. So they remove the blockage and fluid without inserting a breathing tube.

She is doing much better now, in fact last night she was complaining that she wanted to go home. We should have the biopsy results today or tomorrow, and hopeful she can come home soon.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. This has been very rough time, but we are making progress.

It's been a rough a couple of weeks for me

Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Well, it has been a very long time since I posted a blog. Life just got so busy and I lost track of the some things, including spark for the most part.

Since last June, I was doing two jobs, one in the lab and one in safety. Well, as of May 1st, I am all in safety. It has been a very busy transition. I am pretty much settle into a routine now, and have figure out how to get everything done and where everything is in my new office. I moved so quickly that I just put stuff away and then couldnít remember where I put it.

At the end of May, my Oma (grandmother) passed away. She was 92 and not in good health, but it was really hard for me. I moved away from my Oma when I was 13, after spending the first part of my childhood not very far for her, so my memories are of a healthy woman. And to think of any other way is just foreign to me. So I travelled from PA to Colorado for her memorial service. While I was there, my step-mom (who raised me from 13 to now) was diagnosed with step 1 lung cancer. As you can imagine, it was a hard blow for me. So I get home from Colorado, and there is message from me that my only remaining Grandma was taken to the hospital with unexplained bleeding. So after flying all day, driving 1.5 hrs from the airport to home, I am in the car again driving 2 hrs to the hospital, only to find out they sent her home. She ended up back in the hospital a couple days later, stayed for 4 days and is home and doing better now, but still no explanation for the bleeding.

So my life has been in an uproar for awhile now, and I am finding myself lost. I need to start to pull things back together, and focus on something. So I am going to focus on staying healthy and getting some exercise, things I can control and let God handle the rest.

So sorry for your loss, Sweetie. That is quite the roller coaster you have been on and it is understandable that you needed a break from Spark to handle your life. Remember that we are all here for you, always, just as you are supportive to us. I actually repeat the Serenity prayer when I am going through tough times and it gives me much peace, knowing that God gives us the strength and control to handle certain things, and He will take care of the rest. Take good care of yourself during this time, making sure you get as much rest as you can. Emotional stresses can really take a toll on one's entire body. Thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. emoticon

You have indeed gone through some roller coaster this past year. First, job changes, then the loss of your Oma.
You know, this is the first time I read that word (Oma) again. I grew up in Germany and we had an Oma and an Omi (to distinguish the two we had). For some reason, my oldest son didn't want his kids to call me Omi, but my youngest son and his wife now have a little girl and they are teaching her to call me Omi. It warmed my heart.
Glad things are normalizing in your life. I hope you are enjoying your new job and will now find time to concentrate on your life and what is important to YOU.

You have already made a great start by focusing on what you can control, and letting God do the rest. You know you have to maintain your own health to be there for anyone else, and that is half the battle.

Thinking of you! Hugs,
