The Final Part of My Wt.Loss Journey~~~

Monday, January 24, 2011

As a continuation of the other previous two days ' blog, at 4 months ,[well almost five], I had gotten accustomed to being on SP as a daily habit~logging in every bite, exercising daily & logging that in,too! The Nutrition Tracker & Fitness Tracker were like my "nutritionist" and "trainer" that would reflect what I was doing --whether good or not so good! The weight was coming off slower--after the first five & then ten total pounds, I hit a plateau! I sought advice from Sparkers in a blog and one Sparker said if I have upped the Strength Training, then up the CARDIO !!! So ,I ran more and the weight started coming off more ,but still slowly [which BTW, IS THE BEST way and safe way to lose wt.!]--a.5 lb in two weeks, then another .5 lb. in a week and eventually15 lbs.!!! By 19.6 lbs. I was impatient to be DONE so I reset my goal wt.and then I lost the .4 of a lb. the next week =total =20 lbs.!!!! That may NOT seem like much if you have more to lose, but to ANYONE including myself,ANY EXTRA WEIGHT lost is such a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT and all the great things that follow~~less STRESS on the heart, the mind!,the cholestrol DOWN to Normal, ENERGY is WAY UP and Metabolism is now at a GOOD WORKING RATE!!! And THAT is my weight loss journey!!! Remember with DETERMINATION & PERSEVERANCE , emoticon!!!!!
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY!!!! ~~~Betsy
PS---If you look at my caloric intake sheets[dated Jan/Feb/MarApr/May /Jun2010---particularly Apr & May],I wasn't ALWAYS eating healthy, but I always tried to exercise THE NEXT DAY,if I went over board with the calories! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My First Few Days on SP~Simple Changes~Part TWO~THE WT.LOSS!

Sunday, January 23, 2011

After then having been on SP for a few days ,then weeks and then months~~it happened! I was LOSING THE WEIGHT! I first lost 5 lbs in my FIRST MONTH with SP as I was working with 1200-1500 cals. a day[FOR MY 6' FRAME] and working out on the Soloflex machine 3x/wk for 30 min. {Note:My caloric range was a huge difference to the probably 2200-2300 cals .I would GUESS I was consuming at the time BEFORE I joined so I COULD NOT STAY IN THE RANGE the whole month---I only MADE THE RANGE 8X that month!} BUT I WAS WORKING OUT REGULARLY !!!!!!THAT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!{And slowly making HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES!!}. AND MY METABOLISM [BMR] was getting HIGHER b/c of Strength Training,so I KNEW I was on THE RIGHT PATH TO LOSING WT. HEALTHFULLY AND SAFELY!!!! I THEN LOST 3.3 LBS. MORE AND THEN 10 FOR AN AVERAGE OF 2.5 LBS A WK. FOR THE FIRST MONTH! I was DRINKING MORE WATER ,too!! After that it was slower... but I WAS JAZZED AT MY WT.LOSS! After fighting with weight that was creeping up slowly in 12 yrs. and my family having a history of obesity and dying young[my dad @ 56 and my mom @ 58],I was DETERMINED TO BEAT THIS and prove to my siblings that YOU CAN DO IT ~THE HEALTHY WAY[LOSE WEIGHT]! I did NOT want to be on the road my parents had taken and I could see my older siblings had taken [FYI--I am 50yrs.old and the middle child--]and my younger sister & brother slowly letting go of the sports they had participated in & putting on the weight....{to be continued....} emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My First Few Days on SP=Simple Changes~ A Year's Perspective[Part One]

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Since it is my FIRST YEAR {YAY!!!!!} SParkversary this week, I am highlighting changes I made in my life [sometimes including before/after photos-like yesterday's blog-} that helped ME and maybe will be of some use to other Sparkers....
That day --Jan.21, 2010---I will not forget. I was in the Biggest Loser Challenge in my local MOMS{Moms Offering Moms Support}Club and another mom [who has since moved to another state] introduced myself and the moms in the club to a website called Sparkpeople.com. She said it was helping her lose the weight slowly and safely.
I was intrigued yet a bit intimidated as it was a WEBSITE and I had not been on the computer very much at all [I'm a baby boomer and we didn't HAVE computers in the classes at the schools I attended! Plus in my teaching career, computers were used to teach the reading & math & writing games & assignments only and they were on their way IN as I was on my way OUT~retiring after 21 years of service]and had never taken a class to learn HOW to use the computer [I learned from hubby sporadically & by myself through trial & error. Since we had a 3 yo, I could never seem to make the time for a home course or learn at the library.]So to say I was OVERWHELMED BY THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SITE is an UNDERSTATEMENT!!!! I looked at HOW things were set up and navigated my way AROUND the site, but DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BUT READ AND LEARN MY WAY AROUND THE SITE the FIRST FEW days!
The FIRST week----I FINALLY STARTED TRACKING MY FITNESS! This was a BIG HURDLE as I am a SAHM[Stay-At-Home Mom] and my 3 yo does NOT want mommy working out! I PERSEVERED!!!!! He woke up from his nap and I went and got him & told him he could watch mommy finish her workout in the garage {on my Soloflex machine] or not,but I WAS GOING TO DO IT!!!!! I DID and felt SUCH A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT as I had stopped working out for 3 years when he came along!!!!
The fourth day I wanted to TRACK MY CALORIES as I KNEW that was THE WAY for me to BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE BIGGEST LOSER CHALLENGE as I had NO IDEA how many calories I had consumed each day. I had tried writing them down & totaling them ,but it was too TIME-CONSUMING!!! SO, I TRACKED MY FOOD that day---VERY HARD to track EVERY BITE!!! But I was DETERMINED TO DO THIS ,so I pressed on!
After the fourth day-----I got used to "micro-managing" [as my hubby calls it!] my food REGULARLY like clockwork and started TRACKING FOOD DAILY!
From then on,I added A LITTLE to my list of getting familiar with SP each day----I got points [the easiest thing to do, read LOTS of articles[love to read & love information on health issues!],joined Sparkteams, huddled and chatted on many topics, made Sparkfriends and then the BIG HURDLE for ME was THE BLOG!!!! How could I write something people would want to read????? I had a hard enough time finally getting MY PAGE DONE!!! It was a MONTH before I blogged !And then I thought , it's just like talking to my Sparkfriends! And then I blogged REGULARLY til I lost the weight and then later ,once, every couple of days.
To be continued tomorrow....:) emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon -----Betsy

Fantastic! Love your vison boards. Very artistically arranged too, with personal photos and words of inspiration. It was so helpful for you in the process of putting it together, deciding what should go on it, and having it to look at to inspire you each day. I would love to make one like that but for now took an easier option and made one on line with tools from Oprah's site. She has a large selection of photos to choose from that I put together on a page and then I added key words like cleanse, gratitude, focus, walk. It is now what I see each time I turn on my computer as my screen saver.

Keep focused on that maintainance and keep on inspiring the rest of us here on Sparks! Thanks!

My fave is Cardamon Cinnamon from Republic of Tea. I have about 10 different flavors from them right now. I also love their Cherry Apple kid's tea and Spring Cherry-very mild. I get it from their web-site but you can buy it at Whole Food I think and other specialty stores. emoticon

Harney and Sons is a fabulous brand. You can get it online or at Barnes and Nobles. I like english breakfast, all dark black blends, darjeeling and various herbals, all are loose tea. I make my own chai yummy. Teas and teahouses are one of my loves. I collect cups, pots and all kinds of tea books and gadgets. I also get tea of the month from Teavana, a gift from my son a few years ago. You must be a lover also? I have a picture of my sisters and me at a teahouse nearby in my gallery.

I have fallen in love with loose tea! I make it every day and it is a decadent treat. I get my tea at Teavana and my favorite is all of them but I especially enjoy Sweet Oolong Revolution, Samurai Chai Mate and Skinny Chai Pu-erh. The tea alone is so tasty it does not require anything. These loose tea blends also have bits of dried fruit and blossoms -- divine!!! It is a little pricey but you can steep the tea two or three times. Like with anything else, the less processed the better for you -- there are purported great health benefits from drinking tea! emoticon emoticon
