Everyone's Giving Cookies & Candy,But AM Maintaining!

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

I can't believe how almost a year of SP has helped me through the holidays! Christmas is my WEAKEST LINK ;0[pun intended!] in the chain of eating poorly and making bad food choices during the year!
HOWEVER~~THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT!!!!!
I did NOT eat the whole plate of cookies collected from the cookie exchange this year~~I ate some and GAVE AWAY the rest to neighbors!!!!
I have made plans and followed through when I could[still having breathing problems now & then due to bronchitis] to EXERCISE & MAKE IT A PRIORITY!!!
I have tried to keep active with my 3 yo despite the constant rainy weather~~~but am not complaining~~~we need this rain!!:)
How are YOU faring right before Christmas???? emoticon

Oh yeah the cookies and candies are all over the office. I just kindly say No Thank You and smile. I have been eating yogurt instead of the usual sweets. I also pack my lunch and a few extra pieces of fruit just in case my lunch and regular fruit is not enough. SO far I have been doing good! My co-woker brought in a little box of treats for everyone. She had the right idea, by making bite size pieces of each goodie and giving a little taste in your treat box of each goodie.

Thankfully we have only received one plate of goodies so far and we dutifully went through and said, "We like.." "We don't..." and got rid of those "don't" items.

Good for you sticking to it! You've been such an inspiration and motivator to me over these past several months. Thank you!!!

What Christmas Traditions do YOU do in YOUR House???

Monday, December 20, 2010

As I posted this thread on my parenting teams---LIL Mommies and Parents of Preschoolers,I thought it would be fun to read what everyone does ~~~It can be with or without kids.
My tradition I did with my younger brother & sister & the whole group of neighborhood kids{since I was the oldest in our group] was go to our different neighbors[we knew!] and sing Christmas carols and after the caroling was done,we'd go to MY house for cookies & my Mom's homemade hot chocolate! Maybe next year for my 3 yo!
Now,with my son we light the ADVENT WREATH each Sunday before Christmas & on Christmas Day and we count the days to Christmas by opening a door each day on his Advent Nativity Calendar depicting the manger scene and all its participants in celebrating Christ's birthday!
What do Christmas tradition[s] do YOU do?????

We have an Advent Wreath in the middle of the dining room table. The kids' favorite tradition, though, is the advent calendar. It's quilted, and there is a pocket for each day of December through Xmas Eve. In each pocket is a stuffed character, eg camel, donkey, palm tree, shepherd, wise man, Mary, Joseph, angel, etc. Each day you take out the character in that day's pocket and add it to the scene. By Xmas eve when you add the Baby Jesus, you have the complete nativity. The kids love it--of course, the soon-to-be 13-year-old likes to "tip" the cows and make the shepherds sit on top of the palm trees, but he's still into it!

Usually a good breakfast, that consists of all the things I know I should not be eating, but it is Christmas day. This year we are spending it at home. My son is in charge of the cinnamon rolls, he loves those. That's it.

we watch "White Christmas" while we decorate the tree.. we usually go and cut down our own tree.. last year our son was able to cut it all by himself.. usually papa has to help..lol
we spend our days making gifts and decorating the house.. everyone adds their own little touches.. we go to our friends homes and leave little gifts.. just something for them to know we appriciate them and we are thinking of them.. sometimes thats the only gift they get.. I use to make candy and send it off to all my siblings but that got too expensive..
Thats all I can think of now.. we usually have a nice crab dinner for our Christmas dinner and if someone got beef logs and cheese we eat on that all day...LOL I hope you have lotsof holiday traditions to make and continue to do for your little one.. he will remember them all his life.. its a wonderful gift to give to your child...     Typically, we spend Christmas Eve at his parents house, go back for our gifts there on Christmas morning and then go to my parents house for the rest of the day. Right now we don't have kids, so according to his parents, we have no reason to change any of this. Nevermind the fact that maybe we would like to be able to enjoy our Christmas morning together, alone, as a couple...

So, this year we have started the tradition of watching all of our favorite Christmas movies between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Home Alone, The Santa Clause (1-3), How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jingle All the Way, Deck the Halls, Elf, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, The Family Stone... Love them all! It's something we can do together and it doesn't take much time out of our days.. and it doesn't interfere with everyone else Christmas plans for us.

I have several because I got tired of waiting to watch them on tv.. and some years they don't show the classics.. I love the Bishops wife. Bells of St. Mary. Boys town. Miracle on 34st.. Holiday Affair.. Holiday Inn , White Christmas... I'm not a fan of Its a wonderful life.. to much yelling for me.. but its still a fine movie.. I have never liked the Christmas Carol.. it scared me as a kid and I've never gotten over it.. I will definatly look for A Christmas wish and Holiday... I love adding to my Christmas Movie collection.. I have the original Christmas in Conneticut to watch its on my DVR... and hubby loves A Christmas Story... I'm not a fan but I bought it for him a few years ago any way... I also this year got him a collection of Red Skeletons Christmas's... I know he will love those... Ronie

I've always been a sucker for "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven. It doesn't hurt that Cary Grant was so gorgeous! He plays an angel who comes to earth to help out David Niven, an Episcopalian bishop trying to raise money to build a cathedral and keep his family together.

Until I saw the picture I would have said, Alastair Sims Christmas Carol.

Looking at your picture, It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart is another winner!

I don't believe I ever saw A Christmas Wish!

I used to have a cat named Blackie also. She was one of the most interesting & loving cats I have owned. She had been a stray that lived under our house until I started feeding her. She was forever grateful and forever hungry. I hope you get as much enjoyment from your Blackie as I got from mine. emoticon

One of my daughters has a golden lab and a miniture Cocker Spaniel, another one has a black lab and a bull dog - so for Christmas we will have 7 dogs here. My other two daughters each have 2 cats. I do guess we love our animals!!.

My son wanted a turtle emoticonbut when I looked into it I was blown away by the cost and the care required. So he has a beta. emoticon

Very cute pix! I also have 2 kitties, Chloe and Honey, they are 15 and 14, respectively. Cats are fun but I especially love KITTENS, lol. Too bad they have to grow up! But I really miss having a dog. My canine best friend Samantha passed away very young in November 2009 and she left a hole in my heart:-( We tried fostering anhd I realized I am not yet emotionally ready for a new dog, sigh. Maybe next year!

I love them all, and through out my life had everything from mud puppies to a Clydesdale horse. Mostly dogs and Horses but love our one kitty too. I now have five dogs, one cat who thinks the dogs are her kittens and cleans them all the time. I also have a barn with a six pack of miniature horses, the smallest is 29 inches tall and the tallest is 33 inches. They are all pintos, three black and white and three sorrel(red/brown and white) I have a cart and harnes and have been working to modify it for me as a paraplegic to drive the minis.
