To Mom With Love~ Lessons I've Learned From You

Thursday, August 19, 2010

This blog is inspired by a blog I read about the loss of a loved one. My mom would have been 74 yesterday.~~~~
Mom, I've learned to be a good mom to my son, teaching him to eat healthy snacks--like cottage cheese, yogurt, and dried fruit as well as fresh! To try to be patient with him--though I don't have as MUCH patience as you had with me and my 4 sibs!!!
You'd be proud of me and my cake decorating skills --just like you--!! I made him a yellow submarine cake AND an arctic iceberg cake----reminiscent of the time I couldn't decide WHICH cake to have you make for my birthday--a doll cake or a square chocolate one and you made BOTH!
I well remember the OTHER creative outlets you did,too---making swan centerpieces --50 of them by hand for Dad's musician friends' party, wallpapering the bathroom, hallway, each of our bedrms.,baking ,making waste baskets by hand using rolled magazine paper-all 50 of those for the women's boutique at church. Is it any wonder I LOVE to CRAFT WITH MY HANDS?!!!
I miss you dearly, especially the ADVICE you would be able to give on raising my young son that no one CAN DUPLICATE~~~ a daughter wanting to hear from her own mother....YOU had TWO strong-willed children {I was compliant} and now I HAVE ONE!!!!
You knew how to celebrate LIFE with birthday parties or social gatherings of our neighborhood to the house for holiday luncheons, teacher appreciation luncheons,Christmas parties, graduation parties and just having moms in for coffee and A chat! Dad was always there helping you with us kids and giving advice ,too--though I didn't always listen then. Isn't that the way of kids?
Always opening our home to the neighborhood kids with an annual cookie-bake and I've started traditions in my neighborhood ,too! Maybe not ANNUAL Christmas parties and cookie-bakes,but also opening our home to the MOMs Club for Storytime,Kids' Kitchen and our playgroup dates!
You were such a GREAT MOM !!!! I am happy God gave YOU to ME and that you were such A RESOURCE for me to follow and a WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF LOVE,especially since you didn't have a mother to raise you {die in childbirth and grandma raised her}.
I carry all those memories in my heart and lovingly scrapbook the photos of your life so that your FIRST GRANDSON can know who you were, how important you were to me and what A DIFFERENCE you made in my life! Your loving daughter, Betsy emoticon

Happy Birthday to my son ~~turning 3 today!!!!~~A Letter of Love

Sunday, August 15, 2010

Happy Birthday to my son ~~~you're not a toddler anymore ,but moving into the world of preschoolers!!! {Don't worry~~ Mommy is homeschooling you ~~no preschool for you!!}
You AMAZE me with your accomplishments already~~
~Getting a bottle of water X3 all at ONCE ~~carrying them in your arms~~Here,Mommy. Here's One for Mommy, one for Daddy and one for you{he means himself}.
~You READ! Not everything of course, but you don't let that stop you ~~ you try to sound out words with your limited knowledge of consonants and short vowels ~~{ he wanted to learn so I --with the help of my consonant chart --from my former teaching days--& Leap Frog--- Taught Him!---The Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory.
Your EXTENSIVE Vocabulary and word usage! You seem to understand not just WHAT the word in the sentence I'm talking about IS,but IT'S CONTEXT AND WHAT IT MEANS and you use it CORRECTLY!
~Having a NICER ATTITUDE towards people who are thoughtless than I HAVE!
~Showing an aptitude for spelling by sounding the letters out and putting the magnetic letters together on the fridge!
~Pointing out all the interesting information about ocean life in the library books we get!{including the rattail fish---now THAT"S an interesting creature of the deep I never knew about!
~Always enjoying the beauty and showing delight in God's creation~~ whether it is a fresh blackberry to be eaten, a beautiful rose to smell, the sound of a waterfall or touching sand, dirt and whatever else you can get your hands on!
~Your strength and agility at riding a bike with training wheels already and turning those corners fast even though I know you have learned to use the foot and hand brakes!
I love you dearly, and thank God EVERY DAY for you~~ being the blessing in my & Daddy's life!!!
I hope you loved having the ocean life birthday party with friends, family and neighbors!!! Daddy & I enjoyed hosting it for you and all the arts & crafts we did!
Sleep well, little one! We love you!
Love, your parents emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Don't you DISLIKE it when....

Sunday, August 08, 2010

people don't RSVP a party and then SHOW UP anyway?
people BLAST the radio from their cars?
people DISMISS your weight loss as MINOR because THEY have ALOT MORE to LOSE? {I'm talking mainly about my FAMILY}
people who dismiss a child's feelings?
people who think just because kids are little, they don't have any SIGNIFICANT problems?{Dealt with a FELLOW TEACHER Of 2nd graders on that one!]
people who are not mindful of their NEIGHBORS and the noise THEIR PARTY,BASKETBALL GAME IN THE DRIVEWAY OR LOUD conversations at night are causing?

Yes!!!!! I also dislike people that refuse to walk a few extra steps to return their shopping carts and instead just leave them to roll around in the parking lot.

Oh boy did you get that right.. I sleep with ear plugs because this time of the year even with the fan going the noise level is way pass our bed times. And I have always felt that children need validated. They have minds and feelings and adults shouldn't sheww them aside. I hope you have a wonderful week.

Well, you know that your weight loss isn't minor. You feel better and feel better about yourself. It isn't all about losing the weight, but about being more active, energetic and healthier because you have good eating and exercise habits.

If the weight loss program works for me and I share it with my family, they'll just say that they've tried everything, and it didn't work for them. I had lost 30# with Weight Watchers all the while being told that it would never work. My grandma used to do weight watchers and tops. She'd get off the program and in the end probably weighed 300#. So the story goes, "Your grandma would lose with Weight Watchers and she always gained it back." Well sure she lost and gained it back, because she didn't stick with the program. Just became of vicious circle of yo-yo weight loss and more excuses. So, I've sort of just given up. I'm glad I can be on Spark People and share with people who encourage me instead of discourage me.

  Yes to all of them!

It's amazing how insensitive people can be. Just when you think you can't be shocked along comes someone to do the deed!
I know a lot of people who put RSVP only if you can't come so it will minimize the # of calls they get, but I'd rather hear from people so I'm sure -- even then you have some that won't show but I can't recall having anyone show up that didn't respond. That's rude.

It's one thing to have a party and some noise, but you have to be respectful of your neighbors and by 10 p.m. it needs to be toned way down. Maybe inviting all the neighbors would help.

Yes, yes, yes, and again yes. Probably a few more yesses in there. I also dislike those that say they are coming to a party and don't, and those that show up several hours late and wonder why nothing is left.

What was Your Family /Relatives' Reaction to Your Wt. Loss?

Friday, July 30, 2010

My older sis and hubby are visiting today! She hasn't seen me in a year! I will post a blog tomorrow on HER reaction.
What have been YOUR family/Relatives' reactions to your lost weight?----What did they say????? emoticon

MY family thinks it is absolutely emoticon

Other people, well, I can tell they don't like it about what I've done with my weight because it convicts them. I am not out to convict or gloat over ANYone. It hurts when you can sense the cattiness in the room when people feel this way.

I just want people to see that it can be done, but I did NOT get healthy to make them miserable. I got healthy for my own reasons. They gave themselves way too much credit when they think that way!

I'm proud of you! You are doing GREAT and people need to NOTICE and REJOICE with you!

You are looking great! Have a great visit with your sister

This past week we visited friends that we hadn't seen in years (5 years to be exact) although our families have kept in touch... They were very impressed about our accomplishments.

Well, I'll say you look AMAZING!!! Great work, good job and CONGRATS!!!!

My mom was happy for me and said I looked great. But the best feeling was when I met up with my sister (she is 2 years older). She was always "the super skinny one" in the family and I suffered through years of my dad always making a point to say something to the affect that she has always been skinny and I am the "big one." Now that she is older, her metabolism is finally slowing and she has gained weight. So, it didn't need to be said, but now I am smaller than her (can't tell if it's the weight loss or her weight gain though, lol). I actually feel bad because where I have always had to work hard to lose weight and maintain the weight loss, she has not. So, she has no knowledge of how to workout, or eat healthy what-so-ever. Sounds like I'll need to step up the sisterly love and help lead her to "water" and teach her to "drink"... of course, only if she wants to.

They were astonished, and wanted to know what I did. My sister got on board with Sparks immediately and lost her weight quickly. She learned her healthy habits and she is now happily maintaining and no longer using Sparks. She is doing great.
My Mom didn't really have a weight problem and isn't on a computer so Sparks isn't really necessary for her, but she will try Spark recipes if I give them to her..
My brother and his family can't break free of the junk food, fast food lifestyle. His wife is on Sparks, but doesn't utilize it, just lurks and reads blogs. She was given a Doctor's warning about being prediabetic, but even that didn't scare her enough to get on the wagon, she tried, but has too many bad influences around her :(( Its a real shame. Once her and her husband went on Weight watchers and they did terrific, but it didn't stick, and they went back to their old eating habits..You can't help people who won't help themselves :(
It will be interesting to see your sister's reaction (you need a hidden cam to capture it on video LOL).
Have a fabulous Friday!
