While On Vacation~~Ate A HEALTHY BREAKFAST,BUT Lunch and Dinner...OOPS!

Sunday, June 13, 2010

As I listed in my secret of success for today, I did WELL in the area of BREAKFAST while ON VACATION and DID NOT eat the freely offered Waffles,Danish Pastries,English Muffins. And Mini Muffins--ok-only ONCE! {Our Comfort Inn Accomodations includes free breakfast with the room& exercise room & pool---however, too cold at Monterey!]. I DID TRY to go by My sparkfriend HEPPJSHEPP's idea of the "plate method" of DIVIDING UP THE PLATE into SECTIONS ~~ 1/2 veggies[or 1/4 veggies, 1/4 fruit] and 1/4/protein and 1/4 whole grains/starches.It did work for one dinner. But I learned the portions served are JUST TOO LARGE and I did ask for a box. And I did follow RONIE11 and other SPARKFRIENDS advice and buy the 100 calorie -packs of crackers---only used in the car forgot to BRING IT IN!! I also kept track of all the foods I ate in a pocket notebook in my purse[so I could log them later] and AM PROUD of myself for doing that since THAT is A NEW HEALTHY HABIT I didn't expect I would do! We did use the EXERCISE ROOM,taking turns watching our toddler in our room while one of us exercised, using the stationary bike or treadmill. Still , I gained 3 lbs.on a 4- day trip, but didn't do as BADLY as I thought I would{maybe should have brought more POSITIVE MINDSET with me,ya think?!}LOL! And though I didn't eat dessert [not counting the 1/2 cookie!] , I KNOW I CAN work the lbs. off easily now I'm back to a regular routine. MY HAPPINESS LIES IN MY SUCCESS~~~ I DID eat HEALTHY at BREAKFAST and did not feel tempted like I thought! My hubby HELPED ME ALOT by eating HEALTHY,TOO! He's been seeing the change in my eating habits and HE'S slowly adopting them~~like salads MORE OFTEN!!!And of course, our TODDLER is eating HEALTHIER because of OUR FOOD CHOICES!! So, our family's eating HEALTHIER~~~ONE MEAL at a TIME!!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticonNote: After blogging this morning, went to weigh myself and LOST 2 of the 3 lbs.[after being only ONE DAY back]! Helps to be able to get back into the morning mile run routine and eating my cottage cheese-2%- for a regular snack!

Great job, Betsy! And I thought those pounds looked suspiciously like water weight from eating out. Glad they are coming off quickly!

Sounds like you had a fun vacation. You were prepared to keep up your healthy lifestyle. I am so encouraged by how good you are doing. I have not had enough vegetables today.

Anyway, you are GREAT!!!!!!

It sounds like you had a great time and was mindful of your food choices.. It will be a sign of success when we no longer need to think about how we feed our bodies and all this knowledge will become second nature and that will be so much easier.
Congrats on shedding a few of those pounds already.. thats wonderful.

I think it's wonderful the kind of example you are setting for your family! You did really well on your vacation because you made choices not to eat certain foods and you did log your food which is helpful! We can't always have perfect days, but we just have to get back on track the next day! Keep up the great work and stay focused! emoticon

I have an idea those pounds will come off quickly! Think about what you ate - did it have more sodium than what you have at home? I bet it did, and that can make a difference!
How wonderful that you are setting an example and are a role model for you little one! That's being a GREAT mom!

A Cholestrol Numbers Blog OR How I Went DOWN 77 points on my cholestrol TOTAL in 4 months time !!!!

Saturday, June 12, 2010

I started Sparkpeople in January 2010 with a cholestrol TOTAL of 268. I THOUGHT I had a family history of high cholestrol, but found out that one of my older sisters[who is overweight by at least 30 + lbs.] does NOT have high cholestrol,so it is NOT a FAMILY HISTORY thing.
I started eating OATMEAL-Quaker -flavored kinds [since I DON'T LIKE regular] 1 packet +1/3 or 1/2 of ANOTHER packet ---I like my oatmeal THICK!---EVERY DAY since Jan.21. I also EXERCISED EVERY DAY [ including 1 day off each week]! ~~~A HELPFUL HINT~ We buy a CASE of 55 packets of OATMEAL from SAM'S to save $$$---Quaker ----Flavored --MULTI PACK-- Apples & CInn., CInnamon & Spice, Banana Bread, Cinn. Roll, etc.
I got tested MAR.22 and my cholestrol WENT DOWN 47 points!!!!! [ 3 mos. later---30 MORE PTS]
Here are my numbers--wt. DOWN 11.4 lbs. from 193.8 to 182.4 [3mos. later-Lost 7 MORE lbs.- wt. 175.4]
body fat from 33% to 30 %[29%]
Triglycerides[should be under 150]--- 79[3 mos. later-- 80]
HDL---HEALTHY,GOOD CHOLESTROL [should be OVER 45]---62 [3 mos. later--84]
LDL----LOUSY ,BAD CHOLESTROL[should be UNDER 130]---143[3 mos. later-----91]
TOTAL CHOLESTROL[should be UNDER 200]--was 268 --went DOWN to 221 [ 3 mos. later-191]

Fast forward to 3 months LATER-- June 8 --still exercising EVERY DAY & eating OATMEAL EVERY DAY [again 1 pkt. + 1/3 or 1/2 pkt. for breakfast only] --ate other meals ,ALWAYS staying within my cholestrol RANGE of 0-300 for the ALMOST the ENTIRE 4 months--once in a while I went OVER the cholestrol range but NOT TOO OFTEN!
Number comparison is in [parentheses] UP ABOVE~~~

I hope this information may be of help to anyone who has HIGH CHOLESTROL or family members who may have it.
IT's TRUE and my stats PROVE IT~~ EATING OATMEAL every day + EXERCISING EVERY DAY--even though my DIET was NOT ALWAYS HEALTHY=LOWERING YOUR CHOLESTROL!!!!!
I wish all sparkers GOOD LUCK in the fight to BEAT HIGH CHOLESTROL!!!! ~~~~Betsy emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I eat the instant oatmeal (lower sugar) at least four mornings a week, mixed with Dannon activia light yogurt (I don't like milk) and some form of fresh fruit. Like you, my cholesterol is down and in a "normal" range. High cholesterol does run in my family - mom, dad, and both brothers (even the skinny ones!). I had bloodwork last month and things were good, but the doctor wants me to stay on the meds (Crestor) until I go back in August.
I've lost 84 pounds and my blood pressure is now 120/90 - down from stroke level (I don't remember the number!). I do take meds. Like cholesterol, high BP is a family thing. My dad, both grandfathers, and 6 uncles all died from heart problems, one uncle at 37 and one grandfather at 63. My dad was 60. My younger brother has had 2 heart attacks and congestive heart failure. (He's 58)
Diabetes also runs in the family - the same brother is diabetic, as were my grandfather and 4 of my aunts.
Taking care of our health is so important! Thank goodness we found Spark!
Stay positive,
Sheila

I, too, eat oatmeal most days for breakfast. I exercise most days. I've lost almost 40 pounds. Like you my numbers have seriously improved. For most of us this is a problem we can take charge of and solve. Good for you. Good for me.

YAY!!!! happy dance...LOL
I haven't been to the Monteray area in decades but I remember it was so beautiful.. I hope you had a great time...

Betsy, how wonderful!! I was wondering if it really helped to eat oatmeal every day. I just don't always believe the commercials and advertising. It's so wonderful to know from someone who has been there and done it that it works!

Thanks so much for posting this blog--it gives me hope and I will add in oatmeal right away so mine will be down the next time. (I have already increased my exercise immensely--from nothing at all to 80-100 minutes per day--and have lost almost 25 pounds. The oatmeal should put the icing on the cake!!

Great going! I think that it is so good that you did it without medication. I see a lot of people that would rather take a pill than change their lifestyle, so I am very much encouraged to see someone do it of their own initiative.

Good Food Choices=Good Results!!!

Saturday, June 05, 2010

Came up with this blog title when I was reciting to my toddler ~~Good Behavior Choices=Good Results!! We are constantly as parents~~especially with TODDLERS, trying to get them to make HEALTHY CHOICES! It is HARD when those little eyes are WATCHING to eat healthfully ALL THE TIME,so I've come up with the "Eat something that is GOOD for YOU,then you can have something SWEET." Not specifying what is sweet leaves my options OPEN~~Fruit, etc. instead of traditional ~~Candy, cookies, etc. HOWEVER, we DO indulge OCCASIONALLY!!! What do you do with YOUR food choices???? emoticon emoticon

My first 3 grew up with lots of junk food emoticon The last 4 are learning to make healthier choices. When they have snacks they know to look for a serving size and put it in a bowl.

We potty trained my grand daughter with hershey's kisses.. geez I hope we didn't start something... She seems fine now and she potty trained much faster than her brother..lol My daughter and my son both ask for fruit or a veggie for a treat.. I have no idea where they got this from. Maybe I have always eaten better than I thought. I know you will teach your little one to eat right.. He may surprise you and ask for something healthy too...

Well, when my kids were young, they had to eat a serving (child size -- not my MIL's serving) of everything on their plate AND do their chores before they got dessert -- whatever it was.

MHNGJR 6/5/2010 4:11PM

emoticon I used to say that to my kids. They started asking for something sweet by saying, " If i eat . . . (apple, cucumbers, etc.) can I have?"

For me right now, if I finish my day's tracking and have done good balancing everything, I eat some dark chocolate as a treat. So I guess I'm doing the same thing. emoticon
