Well Ladies I know its been awhile but I have been very busy. I started school in January and I am doing very well. I am taking 3 classes, 2 during the week and 1 on Saturday. I have also been moved to MOID at school to work with a student who is SID. This has been very stressful for me because he is extremely hard to deal with. He is very aggressive and for whatever reason not medicated right now. But I am taking it all in stride and praying about it. I am also trying to balance being a good mother to my soon to be 2year old, who by the the way has surpassed the terrible two's and is in the terrible teens.....LOL

I am also maintaining my weight..I would like to lose a little more before I go on vacation in June but I am happy at how well I did last summer and also that I am still that weight.

I just wanted to fill you guys in. I hope I can become a little more active on the site in the coming weeks but know I am thinking of you guys every day.....

Congratulations! I hope all goes well for you. I have my early childhood, regular elem. and high school English certification, as well as k-12 ESOL. So, if you have questions along the way, please feel free to ask. I've been through quite a few classes, and I may not have all the answers, but I'll be glad to help you if I can.

Thank You

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

I would just like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all my SP friends for the words of encouragement regarding the passing of my student Madison. The community, my school and especially Madison's friends have come together in such a great way . Last Saturday there was a bake sale held in his honor, that was put together by the students. The money raised is going to buy bracelets to keep his memory alive and to start a memorial fund for him and his father. I know that returning to school in the next few weeks isn't going to be about sadness but about celebrating Madison's life.

Once again, Thank You my fellow Sparkers !!!!!

Much Love,

Tragic Loss

Monday, July 09, 2007

I am completely lost at this moment. I just received an email from my school counselor that a 6th grade student , that I worked with last year was killed in a car accident. At this point I don't know what or how to feel . He was a wonderfully brilliant but goofy young man. He was the exact reason I wanted to become a teacher. I really don't know how it's going to be without him next year. If you don't see me for a few days it's just because I'm coming to terms with the loss. But I know that I should maintain my daily routine and I will try to.

LOVE YOU ALWAYS, MS.POWELL................

I have some idea of what you are feeling. When I started as a para 10 years ago, I was a one-to-one aide for an 11 year old boy who was a near drowning victim at 18 months. He came with an LPN to do the feeding tube and trach tube. He died of respiratory complications just before Halloween the second year I was working with him. To add insult to injury, I ended up bumping someone who had started with a wheelchair bound girl with CP because when Bryan died the other aide hadn't completed her 90 day probation period. Hang in there. Getting back to work will be tough, especially if you are in places where you used to see or work with Madison. But if your job keeps you as busy as mine does, this, along with finding other students to encourage and support will get you through it. You can also share with the students you work with that you are having a sad moment (or day) because of Madison. I never cease to be suprised at how understanding and supportive my students can be when I share that I have sad moments or obstacles to overcome just as they do.

The same thing happened to me last year except I talked to him on Friday and he was shot point blank in the chest on Sunday. He was one class from graduation. I went to the wake and made my piece with the situation. It was what I needed to let me know how much I care for the children I work with.

Remember when you hurt when they are hurt and you smile because they smile you are truly in your purpose!!!

School News !!

I am first going to begin by saying " the devil is a lie" !!!! lol Now that I've said that let me first say to my ESP Sistas ' Thank You" for supporting me and making me want to find a new was to obtain my goals of becoming a teacher.

Where I live there are 2 major universities ( 1 I applied to and got rejected and 1 that I know I won't get into), there are also other schools in my surrounding area that have a BA in middle grades education program. So naturally most people suggested I attend one of those schools. Well here was my dilemna ... I currently nor have I ever had a driver's license. I know I'm 24 what the heck am I waiting on but thats another story!!!! So anyway I really felt that I couldn't go on with my dream until I went back and researched the Spectrum program again and realized that I didn't have to have any specific 60 credits!! I was so excited!!

So here is the new plan.....I am going to enroll in my local technical school and obtain an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education ( just in case I decide to go into elementary school 1 day) . Once I complete this program over the next 1 1/2 to 2 years, I will be eligible to enroll in Spectrum. I feel like this is the best plan for me considering that I have summer's off . I plan on taking 2 classes while school is in session and then take more classes over the summer. I think this will workout really well for me ............ So that's my school news ladies !!

And yes I plan on getting my license before school starts (LOL)......

I am a teacher in Marietta, GA (actually Kennesaw). Let me tell you about teaching being a calling...
I went to Penn State right out of high school in 1993 for 3 years. I had SO MUCH FUN they told me my grades weren't good enough for me to be a teacher!
I dropped out when they told me I had to be something else.
I worked for 3 years, moved to GA in 1997, started Kennesaw State in 1999, graduated in 2001 with a teaching degree and a brand new baby. Now, 6 years later, I am about to earn my Doctorate.
The Lord definitely has a plan for us...sometimes not OUR plan, but HIS plan always comes out better in the end.
Let me know if you need any help with your course work...a classroom to observe, papers to be edited, etc. I would be HAPPY to help!
