Friday update for Dennis

Sunday, October 30, 2011

Friday, October 28, 2011 7:48 PM, EDT

Hi Everyone - Jo here,

Sorry again for no updates this week. Getting on the hotel computer was not happening as there were a ton of teenagers there while we were there. Then to be honest we have been busy and tired since coming home.

OK, in Philly we had to see the triage Dr for 2 reasons;

1. Den's belly pain had been getting worse on a daily basis, and he couldn't take much more. They did some research as well as blood work and finally figured out why he got the pancreatitis to begin with and that trying to go even a very low fat diet to keep nutrition up for radiation was not working. So he is now on a clear liquid diet for 10 days. After 24 maybe 36 hours of this NO PAIN. So we are sacrificing calories for no pain. Even Doc's know how Den is and that he WILL gain back the weight. Oh, reason for it is drug interaction between his daily chemo pill and the type steroid he is on. It appears the steroid increases the effect of the chemo pill and a side effect of high doses of the chemo pill are belly pain and pancreatitis. His oncologist ok'd him to stop his chemo pill while he is finishing up the steroid as well.

2. He had developed an infection on his fingers and a couple spots on his face. They gave him antibiotics and said it came from the chemo pill which is now more potent due to steroids. That's all better now too. I am telling you the last few weeks have been CRAZY!!!

We go back to Philly Monday evening for tests and appts Tues and Wed. All sorts of them...MRI, PET Scan, pulmonary function tests, physical therapy occupational therapy, Pulmonary Dr appt, Oncologist and Neurologist appt. Goodness, I am already tired hahaha.

I think we should be off for maybe 6 weeks after that, Possibly 3 but I am thinking positive and going with 6!

Again, please forgive us for being neglectful.

Love to you all,

Jo

I was so glad to see this tonight and know that our prayers are being answered. This definitely tells it like it is and how true that sometimes life just takes over and we neglect to do other things. Continuing prayers for Dennis, Jo and their entire family and friends.
I will update on myself in the morning. I am extremely tired and need to go to bed. Have a great night and a super Sunday.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

No test results yet

Friday, October 28, 2011

Have not gotten a report back yet on the kidney ultrasound or the pelvic ultrasound. Hope that I will know something Friday morning and that my potassium level and my creatinine level will be back to normal. I will try to have a good night's sleep so that when I get my good report in the morning, I will be ready to rock n roll out of here.
I will talk to the nutritionist as they have to adjust my diet...lower sodium, lower potassium, limited carbs, limited protein, no gluten. Hmmmm...is there anything left to eat? To start off this new diet, they brought me in a bedtime snack which consisted of a banana and roast beef on a regular white dinner roll. Saw what was in the bag and just closed it, told the nurse and asked for an apple...haven't found one yet. I am sure though that I won't starve before breakfast. If nothing else,i am filling up on liquids from my i,v, bag.
I am very thankful that we have the medical knowledge and medications to get to the bottom of these issues. The nurse just told me that she will check to see what my creatinine level is and that my potassium level was down to 5.6 which is is very close to the normal range of 4.5 to 5.5. Praise the Lord that things are falling into place.
It's late and I am going to try to get my beauty sleep. Thank you to all my wonderful friends for your prayers and support for me always. You are the best and I love all of you. I will update as soon as I know anything.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

I hope they get the results soon and you can get back to your life.

The Lord blesses us with many things; trials by fire among them. If life has taught me anything, it is that a positive perspective during the darkest times in our lives can lead to extraordinary results. Believe that God is there with you, watching over and out for you, Darlin'.

All of life's tests are Pass/Fail. But the questions are frequently worded to confuse. Just stay positive, and know that the right answers will come to you when they are needed most.

Best wishes, as always.

Prayers requested for me this time

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Just a short blog. I am in the hospital due to kidney problems and very high potassium, super high creatinine levels and a kidney infection. I also have a pelvic mass blocking my left kidney. BP is running low due to a new med... which they stopped. Things are a bit crazy at the moment. Don't worry, Everything will be ok. This all just came up after my visit to my neuphrologist yesterday. She did blood work and called me this morning before I was able to get out the door to have my pelvic ultrasound done. (They may do it while I am here.) Her instructions were to come straight to the ER. She was worried and jumped right on it. I came to the ER and they liked me so much they kept me as a patient!! Who would have thought!!! I have learned several things today.
It's late and I am going to try to get my beauty sleep. Thank you to all my wonderful friends for your prayers and support for me always. You are the best and I love all of you. I will update as soon as I know anything.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

Radiation continues this week

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Saturday, October 22, 2011 9:51 PM, EDT

Hi Everyone - Jo here,

We are home, had a busy and great day today. Poor Den is really tired...but have no worries, he WILL NOT miss the game. We will go back to Philly tomorrow afternoon for treatment Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then thats it! HOORAY Now we do have to go back for 2 days the following week but that is just for usual PET and MRI scans and doctor appt. His pain is same; belly is BAD, daily headaches improving! Doc's finally talked him into getting back into taking his pain meds. This belly issue is due to pancreatitis, and the only thing to really fix that is rest it by sticking with clear liquids. He can't do that right now because he needs the nutrition to get him thru radiation. So, after rad, we'll go more clear liquid for a week or so and once pancreas has "rested" we'll buck up his weight again. He is down about 12 #'s right now and Dr's aren't to happy but are ok as long as he doesn't lose anymore! He really is fatigued and to be honest, pretty weak. But this too will pass! His spirits and attitude are GREAT! This round of cancer craziness has been short but intense. ha ya think? 2 holes drilled in your head might be considered INTENSE!
Love to you all,
Jo

I am starting my week off with two doctors' appointments tomorrow. First appointment is with my regular doctor, then off to the chiropractor for severe discomfort between shoulders and neck. Tuesday morning, I will be in Pittsburgh to see my neuphrologist. At 1:00, Ken has an appointment at the Wound Care Center due to ruptures in his skin on both legs (lymphedema). Thursday morning, I will be seeing the urologist before heading to Philadelphia to the Cancer Treatment Center of America for Ken's appointment Friday morning. I guess keeping busy will keep me out of trouble.
It's late and I am heading to bed for my 8 hours of beauty sleep. Thank you to all my wonderful friends for your prayers and support for me always. You are the best and I love all of you. I will update as soon as I know anything.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

For you from the Holy Spirit:
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Late Thursday...Sitting by the toasty fireplace...Denny update

Friday, October 21, 2011

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 4:52 PM, EDT
Hi its denny here, I am just going to do a short update as I am totally exhausted. I believe all is going well with the exception of the difficulty in getting food down, no choaking just the terrible burn caused by the pancreatious. Many activities today including RAD, PT and acupuncture, they are focusing on the digestive track and hopefully I will soon see some relief. Everything is going the way it should. I am checking out, you are all important to me, love, dad, pop, den

It's late and I am off to bed. We did light our fireplace today as it has been cold and rainy making the house very chilly and damp. Now our living room is just "toasty" and I love it! It appears that Ken has camped out in the recliner for the night...right beside the burning fireplace. Have a great night and a super Friday. Talk to you tomorrow.

Thank you to all my wonderful friends for your prayers and support for me always. You are the best and I love all of you. I will update as soon as I know anything.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

Denny has enough courage and positivity to fill the world. By the grace of God, that will see both he and Jo through this very difficult situation.

Best wishes and prayers for you all, Helen.

sorry the pancreatitis is causing so much deifficulty! Hope it's resolved soon.

Yikes . . . we did the same thing yesterday evening! The kids and I lit a fire in our fireplace and camped out there last night. COZY!!

So glad Dennis is seeing some progress, hopefully they can get that pancreatitis under control so he doesn't suffer so much when eating.
That is amazing you are getting fresh raspberries at this time of the year! Lucky you!
That sounds so wonderful that fireplace! My Mom has one, but they haven't lit it in many years, worried about the chimney being blocked by bird's nests, etc.
Enjoy your McKenzie Friday!
