Life is never as bad as people may think...

Friday, February 12, 2010

As I was driving to McKenzie's house today, I saw devastation everywhere. Houses burned, buildings caved in, trees down, snow everywhere. The schools in our county and beyond have had no school all week and may be out even longer. People are still without electricity and heat. They are not coming into the heating centers for help...possibly because they cannot get there. This brought back the memories of Hurricane Katrina and what devastation they went through. I was in Walker, Louisiana, for three months after Hurricane Katrina due to Ken's aunt's death. Tens of thousands of people had been stuck in New Orleans without sufficient food, water, medicine, medical care...seemingly without hope. Many are still fighting back there several years later and they continue to hope. Efforts to assist those affected by Hurricane Katrina still continue even as those affected by the terrible hurricane continue to work to regain the health and livelihood that they had before the storm. The Saints winning the Super Bowl has again brought even more hope and pride to a struggling area. May God continue to bless them.
I praise God that nothing we are enduring now even begins to compare with what those involved with Hurricane Katrina went through. We can, and for the most part will, survive while continuing to help everyone we can.
I still found out something this evening that surprised me and made me smile and thought I'd share it. I saw on the news tonight that 49 of our 50 United States have snow. The only one without snow is... Hawaii. Amazing!!!
Stay warm and be safe. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

It never ceases to amaze me how deeply Katrina impacted SO many people, and not all of them in our region. The rings of her boulder dropping into the ponds of our lives seem never-ending. But! She's gone. Isn't that the most wonderful news?! And we are still here. And we are WINNERS! I SO hope y'all get to come back and bring McKenzie to Mardi Gras one of these years. It's such a magical time, especially for the kids. I can run from a hurricane. You can' t run from that snow!! Tell Ken I said it's 34 in Hammond tonight and parades are gonna roll in New Orleans and Baton Rouge while he has icicles forming on his hiney! lol Come south, young man, come south! It sounds just dreadful for so many up there. I pray relief is on the way for all who need it.

Helen you made me realize how lucky I am .There is always someone ,somewhere that is worse off then I am .Sometimes when I look around I don't feel that way especially when others have so much and we have so little and it seems like we are always struggling to just survive or exist .Like I told my oldest son that is in jail today God has us right where he wants us and at the time he wants us there.I keep trying to find the positive in things .
With everybody saying that everything was heating up that we are having GlobalWarming, God decided to cool it down .I believe God has a sense of humor or I would like to thing so .

You are right regardless of your situation, you can always find someone that is worse off than you. We have had so much happen to our fellow people lately. I am in a position and I am seeing the devastion of the job lose in this country. These people are trying to keep their heads above water and care for their families. They are living hand to mouth and are just getting by. I see the sadness in their eyes when talking with them. They ar proud, but all that is happening is breakng their spirits. Personally, we are fortunite that we have work but we are cutting our expenses as we see what is happening to so many. When we go to the grocery there we are able to donate so much for food for the Harvest Bank. Hubby always gives extra for this. As he says we are forunate and we need to share

Oh...the weather outside is still frightful...but maybe getting better

Thursday, February 11, 2010

We were really lucky today...we only had another 2-3" of fresh snow. As I was shoveling the 2" of new snow this morning, more snow was falling. I had another 1/2" to shovel at 2 pm as Ken was leaving for work and I walked to the post office. I am out of places to pile all this fluffy white snow. We finally received our newspapers today that we haven't received since last Friday. I always read the entire paper daily and it just isn't the same reading it online. I felt really bad for the delivery guy as he bagged all the papers and then just threw them all into the snow banks. mine landed in the path of our sidewalk. My elderly neighbor's was in a big snow bank and I used her broom and snow shovel to retrieve them. I won't take a chance on trying to climb up and over the snow plowed and stacked to my waist or higher.
I praise God that we have our electric and heat, including our fireplace. We did lose it for a while last Saturday but were among the very fortunate and got it back Saturday night...only out about six hours. My stepfather, youngest sister and youngest brother still are without electric. My brother's neighbor has electric and has let him run an extension cord so that the pump for his hot water heat will run and circulate their hot water so that their heat is working. My sister and stepfather are heating with kerosene heaters but said they are staying warm. Ken's oldest son lost his electricity last Friday and it was back on last night. WOOHOO!!! He has natural gas heaters so he has had heat. He was among the fortunate also...being you and healthy. Praise the Lord that all are healthy and doing fine.
Tomorrow is supposed to be cloudy and snow free. But the snow is supposed to start again on Saturday and snow showers are in the forecast for the next ten days. I hear there is a hunt on for Punxsutawney Phil as he forcasted six more weeks of winter. If you know where he lives...please keep him hidden.

Stay warm and be safe. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Let it snow...let it snow...let it snow

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

We are getting another big snow which started about 1 pm today and is supposed to continue through Wednesday evening late...anywhere from 8-10 inches but about 20 miles away to the east they are expecting anything up to 18 inches or more. We will know for sure how much we will get after the fact. UGH!!! LOL We are supposed to have snow showers and show flurries for the next ten days. I am sure our schools will be closed through the rest of this week anyway even though they will just announce one day at a time. All of our local fire departments with electric and heat are open for those without. I have offered to help them in any way possible as I live on the next street directly behind our fire department. They said they will let me know as they also donít want more volunteers than they have people needing shelter. I have been logging tons of cardio minutes with all the snow shoveling...but I am starting to get really tired. My blood sugars have been fantastic and my blood pressure has been the lowest it has been in years!!! Maybe I will have to have snow trucked in so I can keep everything in these great ranges...or not!! Praise God for the snow rather than freezing rain.
Stay warm and be safe. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Helen, you are such a kind person. My mom & I did that many years ago when we got hit with over 3 feet of sn*w in a storm...and our parish opened up the school gym, with those of us in the neighborhood providing pillows, blankets, sheets, etc. There was a supermarket a few blocks from the church. The manager called the pastor to ask if the people trapped in the sotre could stay at the school gym...and he would give each of them a bag of food to bring so that food was available. Spent many an hour cooking, serving, praying, and even sharing mom's insulin/needles for the diabetics that were there. That lasted a week - but it truly was one of the best weeks in my memory.

Good luck with all that sn*w. I'm working at home today and tomorrow as we expect its arrival soon.

Blessings.

Snow, snow and more snow...and then the electricity went out!!!

Sunday, February 07, 2010

Snow, snow and more snow...and then the electricity went out!!! With the electricity going out so did the heat. Praise God that we have our fireplace...with a few adjustments in furniture, Ken had it burning. I had already been out and cleared our sidewalks but it was time to go out and shovel some more. I cleared a path from the road to our elderly neighbors house in the event someone had to get in or out. They are in their 80's and sure don't need to be outside shoveling snow. Richelle and many other friends and families are without electricity and heat. The electric company has over 175,000 families without electricity and say that it will be back on by 11:59 pm on February 12. Praying that it will be on sooner than that especially for those who use it for heating and cooking. After shoveling, I walked around town taking pictures for my elderly neighbor who remembers the "big" snow of 1950 and doesn't have any film in her camera.
I am praying for those in need and praising God that our electric was only out for roughly 12 hours and that I can help others.
Praise the Lord for walking with me always.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Went into Walmarts and the manager told me that rhere were only 8 employees managed to get there for work!

Wow, that's some snow there! Is this PA? If your family and friends don't get power back on soon, it sounds like it's time for a sleep-over. Glad you're safe.

WOW! What beautiful photos! I'm surprised the camera didn't freeze up. Trying to wrap my mind around what it is like to have that much snow. I moved to San Diego millions of years ago and had snow during my teen years, but it's really a dim memory. Stay warm and very glad you have that fireplace.

Oh Helen YOU are such a blessing to me and so many others. How awesome that God is using you to be his hands and feet to the elderly in your community.

I can't imagine all that snow being from California. Last week as you know I was at the beach and I came home with a suntan. I am glad to hear you didn't have to go without power for very long.

Stay warm by that nice fire Ken got started and may God continue to bless you in all that you do.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics. My DH and I are going to Yosemite area in two weeks. It'll be the first time I will see snow up close in probably 25 years or so.
Love and hugs!

Beautiful! We got the mini version of that here in Ohio, only about 9 inches. But just enough to make it white all over the place! Awesome about the fireplace, we've had ours going all weekend! I'm happy your electricity is back on, that's always a bonus :)

Take care!

The snow keeps falling...

Friday, February 05, 2010

The snow keeps falling...we currently have at least 6" of fresh snow. All the schools in our county sent the kids home 2 hours early. There has been no traffic on our street and everything is so white and beautiful. I went out and shoveled the sidewalks and a path through the yard to get to our satellite dish. The snow had piled so high on it that we lost our signal. Ken isn't feeling well today, didn't go to work and just wanted to kick back and watch a little tv...falling asleep almost instantly. So I played Ms. Nice Guy and went and fixed it for him. By the time I shoveled to the satellite, cleaned the snow off and started walking back to the house, my path was already covered in snow...and it keeps falling. Shoveling snow is great cardio and that much has been moved out of the way. It is great snow for making snow balls or building snowmen. WOOHOO!!
I went to the dermatologist the other day. Although he did more "bore holes"...aka biopsies...I still have no idea what is going on. I return in two weeks and, hopefully, he will have some news. At this point, any news is good news. He gave me two prescriptions to "try"...he says they should help the itching somewhat. So far, no good. But tomorrow is a new day to give it another chance.
Praise the Lord for walking with me always.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

As far as the dermatology stuff, ouch. I have been there, too, and sometimes wonder what I'm doing, but...

For the snow, I know what you mean. I came back from skiing yesterday and had more snow in my yard and my neighborhood that we did in the mountains! Shoveling is definitely great exercise!! and what a nice thing you did for your husband emoticon

Shoveling snow is good cardio but also hard work. Be careful not to overdo it.

I pray you get your itching cleared up very soon. That can be miserable.

I love and appreciate your positives including your attitude. God bless you dear friend.

Hugs, Shirley

    Hello Helen,
Please be careful when you are shoveling snow. I'm having to do the same over here at my place. We are not as young as we used to be and have be a lot more careful. Good luck on these biopsies you are having done. I've had several myself. Best thing to do is to take 1 day at a time and do not plan too far ahead. My Mom used to tell me do not plan for tomorrow, b/c tomorrow may never come. I never did understand what she meant, but I do take the 1 day at a time though. Talk to you soon, have a good evening, and take care. Always, ERNA emoticon

That's the attitude....shoveling snow burns lots of calories! At least that's the only way I can put a positive spin on all the snow that falls in the winter! lol

Helen, be safe in that sn*w. Even your beautiful blog about it can't convince me there's anything about sn*w to make me like it...nope...nothing.

Sometim
es it takes a week or so for that med to kick in...Hoping the itching is somewhat relieved for you...The blessing is that at least there are ointments/medications to try to help, right?

Have a lovely Saturday! Remember to laugh today! Blessings!

Oh, Helen, if only I could send you some sun & you could send me some snow! Being from Miami originally, I still love the snow, even though I lived in Chicago for 6 years. I never had a really good snow while I was there, though - I'd love to see a 6" or more just once! I love it when it's nice & white & fresh, & even though it's so darn unsafe, I love to see the ice on the trees, etc.

Praying for good news from the Dermatologist - be blessed!

Love,

Keroly
