Happy Life Anniversary...I am still alive...Praise God for his miracles!!

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

It was thirteen months ago today that my mom died of kidney failure as a result of her refusal to do dialysis. Little did I know I was soon to follow in her footsteps. It was one year ago today that I was hospitalized and diagnosed with total acute renal failure. Simply put: my kidneys were not working at all!! These links will take you to my blogs of a couple of days during that stay in the hospital: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=1584810

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=1585607

To think I was naive enough to automatically assume that the "D" word meant dialysis...I never imagined that the doctor meant death and that they didn't expect me to live through the night. Praise God for his miracle and intervention. I am thankful that I have my health this year even with all the issues of this earthly body. But I am more thankful that I have been able to help others during the last twelve months and also most recently make and bake pumpkin pies that will be served at the church and the mission Thanksgiving dinners where I will be helping out tomorrow. I will get to enjoy the delicious smells all day and avoid the temptation to eat. It is so heartwarming to see those less fortunate enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. They are open to everyone: those who are alone during the holidays or have no where else to go, those who just want to enjoy the fellowship of others, or those who come because they are hungry. Whatever their reasons, they will be welcomed and blessed by God during this time in their lives.
I still continue to thank God for His miracle of my life yet again and I also thank my Spark friends and relatives because without them I would not have been healthy enough to have survived everything my body went through. Although I may not know what God's plans for me consist of, I know that I am willing and able to do whatever He asks as l continue to praise Him.
Blessings and a very happy Thanksgiving to all. May you find many blessings for which to be thankful for today and every day.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

BTW: I really do not like anything pumpkin so that is always a no brainer for me. lol

Do we recognize our blessings?

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

God is faithful to bless us with what we need when we need it. That doesn't mean he always blesses us with what we want when we want it. Unlike ours, God's timing is perfect, and the gifts He gives us are chosen with His divine wisdom and care.
We prefer to believe that blessings always come with "Yes" stamped on them. We struggle to understand how a blessing can be spelled "No." And yet, denial is sometimes the greatest blessing God can give us. His denial can prevent us from making disastrous mistakes in our lives, like a mother slapping away the hand of a toddler reaching for a hot pan.
How often do we "hound" God to bless us at the time of our choosing? As we stand and tap our mental foot and think, Well go ahead, Lord. I'm waiting. I need my blessing right now. Please let that check be in the mail today. We become frustrated when it doesn't come when we think it should. We lapse into doubt and worry. Then we are surprised when God's blessings arrive at the exact moment they are actually needed.
Blessings come in small and large packages, both expected and unexpected. They come through family, friends, employees, and even strangers. They come in times of joy and sadness. Sometimes we recognize them, but sometimes we don't.
Best of all, God can use us to bless others. He sends us to our sick friends with words of kindness and acts of love. He calls us to bless a stranger with a friendly smile and a helping hand. He inspires us to sing words of blessings, write words of blessings, or says words of blessings as they are needed by the dying, the lonely and the depressed.
Blessing are tiny explosions of joy detonated by God. They ripple through our hearts and shower our minds with His divine light and hope. We are truly blessed by our Father who loves us with the overflowing love of heaven. It is a legacy of joy that we can pass on to others.
If we just take the time each day to look around, we will see so many blessings. They surround us. They come in many shapes and sizes. Have you seen any blessings lately? Do we remember to thank God for them?
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Life experiences continue to show me how great my life is!!!

Monday, November 23, 2009

Life experiences continue to show me how great my life is!! McKenzie wanted to go to Burger King Friday after school to play on their inside playground and she had no homework...something we do when it's rainy or simply colder outside. We got our water and salads and went to the back room to the playground. Greene ARC was there having a birthday party and they were put in the room with the playground as the main dining room isn't very large or set up to handle all the wheelchairs, etc. McKenzie was a bit confused and concerned when she saw them because they were “old like Nanny" and couldn’t play on the slide but also because they were too big to play and climb up and through the tunnels, cars, etc. (I am always telling her I can't play on it because I am to old and to big...it has an age and weight limit on it. The sign on the playground area says it is for children under twelve only.) Of the 35 plus people in the group, six of them were in wheelchairs, three of them had down’s syndrome, and the others had various stages of disabilities or handicaps. One gentleman, TIm, could not eat anything but pureed foods. His helper whipped out a blender, tore his whopper into pieces and put it in the blender along with his French fries, added a little water and pureed his entire meal into one entrée. He really seemed to enjoy eating it. When McKenzie asked why she did that, she explained that it prevents him from choking. McKenzie said "ok, do you want me to help him?" to which his helper thanked her and said it was her job. When McKenzie asked her who was going to say the blessing, the lady in charge overheard her and said that McKenzie could say it...and she did.
McKenzie helped them carry the presents and put them on a table by the birthday "girl." McKenzie and I talked with them and she had them laughing and smiling as she danced, sang happy birthday and some Thanksgiving songs, did backbends, splits, etc. One of the helpers thanked us for treating them like real people. McKenzie looked at me, then back to her and said, "They are real people. They are just like me." Honesty...out of the mouths of babes. I was so very proud of her!! I thought my heart would burst!!! Praise the Lord!!!
It is too often that we are judged by what is seen on the outside and not who we really are. McKenzie's mom told me that she prayed for them before she went to bed that she could go back to Burger King and play with them again; and maybe next time Tim could eat his sandwich like she does.
After her phone call, all I could do was count my blessings...for they are many.
Remember to treat others as you want to be treated and smile because your smile might be the only one they see.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Consistent effort

Sunday, November 22, 2009

As I was typing this in response to a blog that touched me deeply today, I thought maybe others would benefit by reading it also.
If you make more progress than you thought you would, don't compensate by slowing down. You're doing great, so raise your expectations even higher and keep going strong. If you fail to make as much progress as you had planned, don't get discouraged. Remind yourself of why you're making the effort, and re-commit to getting it done. Consistent, purposeful effort will reliably bring the results you seek. On some days you'll move faster than on other days, yet every day you'll keep going forward.
Never forget that there is great power in small actions that are repeated again and again. Though the path may be long and winding and uneven, by continuing to put one foot in front of the other, you'll reach your destination. Celebrate the small victories and learn from the small defeats. Then, keep on moving steadily toward the goal you've chosen.
Put the power of consistent effort to work. And each day, you'll bring new value to life. -- Ralph Marston
Praise God for this is true. Remember to thank Him for all the victories and defeats as we strive to reach our goals.
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

The only thing I need to take personally is my person.

Friday, November 20, 2009

To each of us, our own self is the most important person in the world. I am the only person who can get what I want; you are the only person who can make you happy or unhappy. This doesn't mean the world revolves around us though.
When we were infants and young children, we believed it did. We valued things according to how they affected us. A rainstorm was good if it meant we didn't have to visit relatives who bored us, but it was bad if it spoiled a picnic. We took everything personally.
It's not easy to give up being the center of the universe. Some of us cling to that notion long after we've given up bottles and diapers. But once we acknowledge the impersonality of most events, we can stop taking responsibility for the weather, foreign policy, and the outcome of labor negotiations. We can even stop taking other peoples actions personally. Other people don't really get sick of us,succeed or fail for our benefit, or live or die because of us. It's wonderful to take the pressure off and only be responsible for me!!!
Praise God for this is so true!!
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

I am also glad I am only responsible for me, that's enough to take care of, that doesn't mean I don't still care about things, I do, I am just not responsible for everything that happens in the world, sometimes it takes a lot of time to learn this lesson. Have a great weekend.

Hugs,
Shirl

I LOVE THIS BLOG HELEN! I TRY TO TELL MY CALLERS ON THE PSYCHIATRIC LINE THAT THEY CAN ONLY BE THERE FOR THEIR CHILDREN IF THEY ARE THERE FOR THEMSELVES FIRST. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST DO NOT GET THIS CONCEPT. I SEE SO MANY PARENTS WHO ARE IN TURMOIL BECAUSE THEY GET CAUGHT UP IN THEIR KID'S DRAMA AND ALLOW THEIR CHILDREN TO TAKE CHARGE. THE PARENTS LEAVE THEMSELVES POWERLESS AND FEAR SETS IN. IT WOULD DO THEM WELL TO READ YOUR BLOG!
