Happy Mothers Day!
Posted May 13, 2012 3:26pm
Happy Mothers Day from Atlanta!
Meg had an extraordinary week of rehab and ended the week with a visit from her friends Shane Loveday, Reily Mc Andrews & Jenna McCracken. Pat & Janine McAndrews & Syd Loveday accompanied the kids down to Atlanta. We were all able to take a few trips out of her room. We visited the outdoor garden, the coffee shop and family lounge. We had a pizza party in the family lounge. It was great to get a break from the standard routine here at Shepherd.
Meg continues to grow stronger. She can now make a good fist with her right hand, and left fingers are getting stronger too. The nerve pain in her arms and upper back started this week and is intensifying. This is very painful for her, but it is usually a good sign of things to come. She has been amazing to watch fight through and endure the pain. She continues to amaze her family as well as the staff at Shepherd, and you would think they have seen everything. Through it all, her spirits remain very high and her wit remains sharper than ever. She is able to find humor in a self-deprecating manner, which makes it easier for all of us to remain positive and optimistic about our future. We expect another big week coming up in physical and occupational therapy.
Again, have a great Mothers Day!
This was posted by Meg's mother and I saw it tonight and wanted to share this great news with everyone. No matter what troubles I have, I think of Meg and realize that my problems are nothing compared to hers and what her family is going through right now. However, they all still remain strong and positive on what has to be the hardest journey they have ever traveled. Their faith is unshakable!!! Praise the Lord for that.
Thank God for the miracles He is performing in Meg's life.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

While at piano lessons Wednesday, McKenzie was doing such a good job that her teacher said, "McKenzie, why don't you play the left hand and I will play the right and see how it sounds? Okay?" This is something they do all the time when McKenzie does an exceptional job on a piece of music. Today, McKenzie looked at Miss C and said, "Sure. I don't know if you can do it or not but we can try." Miss C looked at her and calmly and seriously said, "Well, it does look pretty difficult but I will try if you will."
They did a great job together. But I have not laughed so hard in a long time. You just never know what children will say next. ROTFLMBO!!!
Ken and I will be leaving in the morning to go to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia. He has an appointment Monday for his annual mammogram and then will see his surgeon who performed his mastectomy.
Since we aren't going to be home tomorrow, Richelle asked me what I would like to do for Mother's Day. I told her I would love to go to Rinky Dinks, a place I haven't been to in years. It isn't much on atmosphere but then, who eats atmosphere?!!! The steaks there are out of this world and to die for. The dinner salads are a delicious mixture of lettuces, etc. Joe had never been there before and I thought he would enjoy it. LOL!!! This roadhouse/restaurant is just a little country roadhouse along the side of a country road. They have live bands if you want to stay past ten o'clock. Not me, I just wanted a trip down memory lane and a good steak! We were home by eight.

I also received a miniature yellow rose bush and a miniature red one in a lovely copper holder. They are blooming and are beautiful!!! (too dark to get a picture tonight)
Remember to do things you enjoy with those you love. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you are with those you love. Since we never know that each day will bring, be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Have a wonderful week and continue to make the best choices you can as you travel your healthy lifestyle journey.
Blessings, love and hugs to all,
Helen

Meg had a big day in physical therapy today. Meg was placed into a standing position with the help of five physical therapists for the first time since the accident. She was able to support partial weight with her right leg! She did get a little light headed, but that was to be expected. The halo still restricts some of her therapy, but they feel she is making great progress considering the limitations. Luckily, two weeks from Friday the halo will be coming off so then rehab can continue to move forward!
Meg's progress is nothing short of amazing!!! I know that God must have big plans for such a strong, beautiful, hard working, compassionate and motivating person like her!!! She definitely inspires me and all who are facing difficult challenges in life!!! While walking the track at Relay For Life over the weekend, they were playing Miley Cyrus' song, "The Climb" and we were talking of how the song reminded us of Meg. Just couldn't get it and Meg out of my mind.
No matter what troubles I have, I think of Meg and realize that my problems are nothing compared to hers and what her family is going through right now. However, they all still remain strong and positive on what has to be the hardest journey they have ever traveled.

Over the past few days Meg has continued to improve. On Monday at therapy, the therapists put her on the RTI FES bike, which moves her legs for her as if riding a bike, but also allows her to apply resistance to the bike on her own. Next week the therapists plan to put her on the same machine that can also move her arms.
At the Shepherd Center, they have service dogs and one yellow Lab, Frosty, has paid several visits to Meg. He is able to crawl on her lap and visit with her. Later, her nurse plans on putting him in bed so he can lay next to her. Meg enjoys this very much as she misses her own two Labs and Shih Tzu at home, Gunner, Quinn, and Cole.
Meg has continued to enjoy all of her cards and pictures that now decorate her room. Her dance pictures also came in the mail and they now cover her room. All of the staff has commented on how beautiful Meg and all of her dance friends are. Thank you again for all of the continued thoughts and prayers!
Thank you so very much for all your positive thoughts and prayers for Meg. I don't have time right now to stop by each page to say thank you so I hope this will do for the moment.
I am, however, still asking for prayers and positive thoughts for Meg and her family. It is amazing to see how far Meg has come since that terrible fall on April 13th. She continues to have a terrific and positive outlook. Praise God for his continued blessings and for taking such good care of His precious child..
Have a wonderful week doing at least one thing just for you and share your smiles with many.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen
