Meg's Updates

Update 5/17
Posted approx. 11 pm

It has been a long but productive week in rehab. Meg continues to use the RTI FES bike to stimulate her arms & legs. Her hands & feet are attached to the pedals of this motorized machine and then her muscles are electrically stimulated. The bike is used to promote muscle growth and stimulate her peripheral nerves. And it is working! On Wednesday, Meg was able to complete several inclined squat thrusts all under her own power.

She is now able to withstand the diaphragmatic pacer 24 hours a day. This is key to her becoming ventilator independent. Also, Meg had an x-ray of her neck to see how the healing of the C1 & C2 vertebrae are coming along. They came back perfect! So, she remains on schedule to have the halo taken off in 10 days or so. She cannot wait!

She continues to receive a lot of cards and letters from everyone and is very humbled by everyone's thoughtful gestures & prayers. We all are. We also want to let you know that we do read the CarePages every night. It makes us feel closer to home, even though we are so far away. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Looks like another beautiful day in Atlanta! One of this week's highlight: Meg does leg presses from squatting to standing on the leg press table. Kind of impressive ;). Welcoming visitors today for the weekend: with Lydia Goodwin Glass and Andrew MacArthur.

Went completely out of our boxes today: wheelchair football w/ John, Lydia, and Andrew. Meg played center for both teams. What a challenge but so much fun! The triceps will be burning tomorrow! Great way to start the weekend :)

These were posted by Meg's mother and I have to say WAY TO GO, Meg!!! You are showing the world how big your God is!!!

No matter what troubles I have, I think of Meg and know that my problems are nothing compared to hers and what her family is going through right now. However, they all still remain strong and positive on what has to be the hardest journey they have ever traveled. Their faith is unshakable!!! Praise the Lord for that.
Thank God for the miracles He is performing in Meg's life.
Count your blessings today and have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

Happy Mothers Day!
Posted May 13, 2012 3:26pm

Happy Mothers Day from Atlanta!

Meg had an extraordinary week of rehab and ended the week with a visit from her friends Shane Loveday, Reily Mc Andrews & Jenna McCracken. Pat & Janine McAndrews & Syd Loveday accompanied the kids down to Atlanta. We were all able to take a few trips out of her room. We visited the outdoor garden, the coffee shop and family lounge. We had a pizza party in the family lounge. It was great to get a break from the standard routine here at Shepherd.

Meg continues to grow stronger. She can now make a good fist with her right hand, and left fingers are getting stronger too. The nerve pain in her arms and upper back started this week and is intensifying. This is very painful for her, but it is usually a good sign of things to come. She has been amazing to watch fight through and endure the pain. She continues to amaze her family as well as the staff at Shepherd, and you would think they have seen everything. Through it all, her spirits remain very high and her wit remains sharper than ever. She is able to find humor in a self-deprecating manner, which makes it easier for all of us to remain positive and optimistic about our future. We expect another big week coming up in physical and occupational therapy.

Again, have a great Mothers Day!

This was posted by Meg's mother and I saw it tonight and wanted to share this great news with everyone.     I'm sorry she's in pain because it isn't a pleasant thing to endure--but that she actually FEELS it? PERFECT! It really IS a wonderful sign that swelling is reducing and nerve function is regenerating... my sis had a brain injury due to a viral infection/inflammation of the brain lining. She went through a similar process... it's an amazing and humbling journey, and yes--humor is a DEFINITE requirement!

I am SO pleased Meg is making such progress, and I hope it continues!

And how about YOUR progress, m'dear? As I recall, you have a few 'little issues' you've been dealing with as well...

Out of the mouths of babes and dining out for Mother's Day

Sunday, May 13, 2012

While at piano lessons Wednesday, McKenzie was doing such a good job that her teacher said, "McKenzie, why don't you play the left hand and I will play the right and see how it sounds? Okay?" This is something they do all the time when McKenzie does an exceptional job on a piece of music. Today, McKenzie looked at Miss C and said, "Sure. I don't know if you can do it or not but we can try." Miss C looked at her and calmly and seriously said, "Well, it does look pretty difficult but I will try if you will."
They did a great job together. But I have not laughed so hard in a long time. You just never know what children will say next. ROTFLMBO!!!

Ken and I will be leaving in the morning to go to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia. He has an appointment Monday for his annual mammogram and then will see his surgeon who performed his mastectomy.

Since we aren't going to be home tomorrow, Richelle asked me what I would like to do for Mother's Day. I told her I would love to go to Rinky Dinks, a place I haven't been to in years. It isn't much on atmosphere but then, who eats atmosphere?!!! The steaks there are out of this world and to die for. The dinner salads are a delicious mixture of lettuces, etc. Joe had never been there before and I thought he would enjoy it. LOL!!! This roadhouse/restaurant is just a little country roadhouse along the side of a country road. They have live bands if you want to stay past ten o'clock. Not me, I just wanted a trip down memory lane and a good steak! We were home by eight.

Rinky Dinks sign

Front of restaurant

This tractor sits on the front porch at the far end of the restaurant

One mode of transportation

I also received a miniature yellow rose bush and a miniature red one in a lovely copper holder. They are blooming and are beautiful!!! (too dark to get a picture tonight)

Remember to do things you enjoy with those you love. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you are with those you love. Since we never know that each day will bring, be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Have a wonderful week and continue to make the best choices you can as you travel your healthy lifestyle journey.
Blessings, love and hugs to all,
Helen

Meg was standing today!!! Praise God for his blessings and miracles!!!

Posted about 10:30

Meg had a big day in physical therapy today. Meg was placed into a standing position with the help of five physical therapists for the first time since the accident. She was able to support partial weight with her right leg! She did get a little light headed, but that was to be expected. The halo still restricts some of her therapy, but they feel she is making great progress considering the limitations. Luckily, two weeks from Friday the halo will be coming off so then rehab can continue to move forward!

Meg's progress is nothing short of amazing!!! I know that God must have big plans for such a strong, beautiful, hard working, compassionate and motivating person like her!!! She definitely inspires me and all who are facing difficult challenges in life!!! While walking the track at Relay For Life over the weekend, they were playing Miley Cyrus' song, "The Climb" and we were talking of how the song reminded us of Meg. Just couldn't get it and Meg out of my mind.

No matter what troubles I have, I think of Meg and realize that my problems are nothing compared to hers and what her family is going through right now. However, they all still remain strong and positive on what has to be the hardest journey they have ever traveled.
Thank God for the miracles He is performing in Meg's life.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

I love the saying on the plaque at the end. You know, God doesn't want whole, well, happy, well adjusted people to come to Him (well He does but they can come in a happy joyous way) ... it's the broken and lame and beaten down and crushed that He calls forth to be healed. We can only be healed if we let HIM take us apart and put us together again... HIS way.

May 8th Update on Meg

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012
Posted about 5 pm

Over the past few days Meg has continued to improve. On Monday at therapy, the therapists put her on the RTI FES bike, which moves her legs for her as if riding a bike, but also allows her to apply resistance to the bike on her own. Next week the therapists plan to put her on the same machine that can also move her arms.

At the Shepherd Center, they have service dogs and one yellow Lab, Frosty, has paid several visits to Meg. He is able to crawl on her lap and visit with her. Later, her nurse plans on putting him in bed so he can lay next to her. Meg enjoys this very much as she misses her own two Labs and Shih Tzu at home, Gunner, Quinn, and Cole.

Meg has continued to enjoy all of her cards and pictures that now decorate her room. Her dance pictures also came in the mail and they now cover her room. All of the staff has commented on how beautiful Meg and all of her dance friends are. Thank you again for all of the continued thoughts and prayers!

Thank you so very much for all your positive thoughts and prayers for Meg. I don't have time right now to stop by each page to say thank you so I hope this will do for the moment.

I am, however, still asking for prayers and positive thoughts for Meg and her family. It is amazing to see how far Meg has come since that terrible fall on April 13th. She continues to have a terrific and positive outlook. Praise God for his continued blessings and for taking such good care of His precious child..
Have a wonderful week doing at least one thing just for you and share your smiles with many.
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

Glad that meg is progressing well. I think it is marvellous that dogs are used in the therapy process. How forward thinking, there is nothing like the unconditional love of an animal, they just give so much love and comfort. Will pray for Meg and her continued recovery.

So much progression, this bike sounds wonderful. Love that she is getting to see a dog. There is really nothing like them, they are super companions.
Love that photo. Words truly do not need to be said. Our minds are a wonderful thing. Wishing I could share my mobility with Meg, for I truly understand the precious thing she is fighting so hard for. Wishing with all my heart and soul she continues to get better and better..
