Strength training so important

For years I have tracked biking, hiking, walking and spinning in the fitness tracker! However, strength wasn't"t as easy to track unless I did strength videos! That is all changing along with my approach to strength! Thank you Spark!

I have done strength with a trainer combined with cardio and low calorie diets, but just felt exhausted. Now I train making sure to get the balance of good carbs, protein, and watching sodium! I have changed my mind set and I am doing strength where I am truly engaged. I am not just doing the motions, but really contracting the muscles. I am using my own body weight to engage muscles such as squeezing the hamstrings as I do seated leg lifts.

While we so often work to balance calories and food items, we too often forget to balance cardio and strength and strength that you are engaged in and not just doing the motions! Let"s rock cardio too! Having had a knee replacement, I now feel more muscles in my legs and shoulders than I ever knew I had. I am convinced it is the simple contractions that refine muscles more than the exercise!

    When I went to the gym yesterday, the trainer there worked with me to devise a strength training program to lose the most body fat and regain the muscle strength in my shoulders, especially the one I recently strained. And they keep telling us, muscle burns more calories than fat so let's rock this emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Time for me

I decided today to take a year to really enjoy my family, so that means giving up being a teacher of the visually impaired. I will still teach special needs preschool as that is my primary job and I love it!

I feel like I am always trying to be perfect to please others! Well I have learned so much on this journey and now really want to enjoy this year with my son who will be a senior in high school. My daughter lives just 5 hours away now and I want to spend weekends exploring upper Michigan with her while she wants to spend time with me. I want to visit my son and my new daughter in law and not feel like I just have too much work to do! I am doing what is important to me and making it happen at this moment. Taking my own advice finally!

My husband and I love to do activities together such as hiking, biking, boating, skiing. Well as my new knee needs time to heal, I signed us up for a glass blowing class. So looking forward to laughing our way through that!

Family is so important to me and making a difference in children's lives. I just need to balance it out this year a bit better! I want to be more carefree and not try so hard to be what others expect! This is the time to really love me and let it shine onto others!

Learning to love me

I have not lost the weight I promised myself I would lose when I joined Spark n 2013! However, I believe I have been awarded more than losing a couple of pounds!

1-I learned to love who I am! I am a caring, loving person full of energy, laughter and with a much more positive attitude now! emoticon

2- I am learning to encourage myself the way I do others. I am kinder to me mentally! I am happier and it is rubbing off on others. emoticon

3- I may still have a pity party for myself now and again, but only in drastic situations like just having my knee replaced and pain meds making me anxious not restlessl! I learned from the experience and know what not to do next time! emoticon emoticon

4 - I love exercising again and miss it when I had to stay in bed. I have always loved sports, but truly enjoy the fun, the flowers and my exercise partners now! Living in the moment!

5 - I found I am carb sensitive and sugar in my family leads to diabetes. New sugar love is raspberries in plain Greek yogurt or a fresh juicy peach! Don"t get me wrong, I have a chocolate sweet tooth that I train it with a dark chocolate treat now! I love to make simple steamed meals. emoticon

6 - I have learned to inspire others, but have been so inspired by others stories! Thank you Spark Guy. emoticon

7. - I know that when stress of paperwork on the job takes over, I tune into Coach Nicole videos and Leslie Sansone and exercise the stress away. A good hot bath with bubbles and soft music helps too! emoticon

8 - I am grateful each day to have been blessed with opportunities to help others and to learn to take care of me! I am a giver, but learning to make me time too! emoticon

9 - I take pride in myself and my family! I love gardening and love to smell the roses. emoticon

10 - I learned the importance of staying hydrated! Drink way more than 8glasses a day and water in a thermos is always with me! emoticon

I am still learning on this journey of life, but now I appreciate the mountains more and learn from the valleys!

Thank to all my inspiring Spark friends! You have been there for me, and I only hope that I have brighten your days as much as you have lit up mine! I love the goodies, message boards, spark rallies, and articles, but most I love the people who share their success and struggles. Keep posting! Thank you or making streaking more important than the scale!

Ways to push past pain!

Well many of you know I had my knee replaced two weeks ago! I have found different ways to distract myself when the pain sets in and I get sick from pain meds!

Number #1-think of someone who has endured greater pain and my pain doesn't"t seem so bad! My nephew lives in pain daily and I only have it for the short term!

Number 2- Music , such as Mandisa"s stronger song, guides me through it and let's me know I am not alone! I am religious so better than an hallelujah works for me too!

Number 3- do something for someone else! I use Spark to help post and encourage others! They always encourage me too! I am so grateful for my spark friends!


This is the killer one and having ice on helps, but still I use the strategies above to help!

A good nights sleep listening to music to fall asleep!

    I didn't have that contraption, it cost too much and with no insurance it just wasn't something I wanted to spend money on. I just had to sleep with my leg elevated which was hard to do. Glad you are getting along and you will be glad you had the procedure done.

    Oh, wow....I had no idea you had to try to sleep in a contraption! One of our fellow K teachers, Karen, had knee replacement this summer too. I hope you're better soon. So glad you're off the crutches! Keep up the positive attitude!

Taking time to smell the flowers

I love to plan trips, big or small. Well we had our most expensive trip this past summer. We met our son in Germany after his 3 week exchange and did some touring. Now my husband is a on the go type guy, but I got him to enjoy the little moments more this trip. This picture was in Potsdam, Germany as part of the Sansiuce Gardens.


Dresden had a hidden piece of an Italian Garden tucked below a staircase near the Opera house. My son wad still in getting there mode, but he learns quickly.


Prague had a garden wall descending from the palace above that just brought all of us to a tranquil state. We could picture the parasols and the royalty.
. I was in gardeners heaven and I took time to enjoy each level and beauty within.


Vienna was like stepping into the life of the rich and famous with designer shops and flower stands that were masterpieces themselves in color display. Stadt Garden along with just various flowers filling space is everywhere.
Venice had flower pots hanging from windows and on the colorful island of Burano, vines snd small flowering tropical lots here and there. . The roman gardens as part of the Forum in Rome were gorgeous as wee the travattoriad. . The Italians might have quick pic pocketers who got my hubby"s phone and pictures, but they know how to use flowers to enhance the city.
Finally, Mainz, Germany, arranged huge hanging planters on various size platforms that gave them this beauty to behold.

Summer was good planning to enjoy the flowers and to embrace people watching and learning what makes us stop and be amazed!

Enjoying the journey from pt a to pt b made this trip like no other I have taken! The walled garden in Prague was one of the most spectacular gardens I have seen and the hill made the garden better!

I don"t know some of the pictured turned sideways or upside down, but did from phone and should have written from computer - sorry!
