Having a good day for a change

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Having a good day for a change. No chemo side effects today, but usually the day after I'm ok; it's usually the 2nd or 3rd day that I start feeling them. I slept good last night, slept in a little bit this morning, (but not so long that it should keep me awake tonight) with minimum pain. I was able to put off taking a pain pill until 11:30am. My shoulder was starting to hurt then. It wasn't bad, but my doctors are always telling me to stay on top of the pain, to take the pills before it gets too bad. I'm just bad sometimes about waiting too long because I don't like how tired they make me feel.

I've been having a craving for porcupine meatballs, (those are meatballs made with rice in them, in a tomato sauce). I bought the ingredients yesterday. Since I knew I might not have the energy later in the day, I made the meatballs this morning. Now all I have to do when I'm ready to bake them is pour the sauce on them before I stick them in the oven.

Been puttering around the house a little bit, but not doing anything too strenuous. My goal is to have some "spoons" left for Saturday.

glad you had a good day! You definitely deserve it. I have had the porcupine meatballs but have to say they aren't my favorite. Actually I don't eat any meatballs often.

You're a smart cookie, Shari - making those meatballs early, when you've still got adequate energy for the job. I'm proud of you! (If I were your mother, I'd be braggin', believe me.) I haven't ever had the pleasure of eating porcupine meatballs, but I've seen recipes for them...and they look really appealing and satisfying! Let us know how they turn out for you.

Yes, that's the difficult part of some pain meds: they make us drowsy. But I've found that the more often I keep up with taking them (and keeping up with the pain, when I have it), the more the fatigue tends to ebb away over time. That's just been my experience, anyway.

Keep storing away those spoons for Saturday! You're doing a good job :) emoticon

Glad to have my errands and appointments behind me for the week

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

I didn't do my usual Monday morning grocery shopping yesterday, I was just hurting too much when I got up, and I knew I couldn't wait that long to take a pain pill, so I stayed home. But that was ok; once that kicked in, I had a good day for the most part. Just got extra tired after dinner, couldn't stay awake for my TV shows, so at 8:30pm I put a tape in the vcr for them, and went to bed. I read til almost 9:30am then went to sleep.

Woke up a little after midnight when it started to storm. No warnings here, but there were some close by. It was a little over an hour before I could get back to sleep again. I decided then maybe it was a good thing I got tired early and went to bed earlier and got a little extra sleep before the storm hit.

I had a hard time getting up this morning for my 9:45am appointment. I saw my oncologist today and had my chemo. I thought I had my Aredia today too, but it's actually not due til next week. My mom dropped me off today, and my friend Rhonda picked me up. She even took me to the store when I was done so that I could get my groceries. I wasn't really looking forward to having to shop, but it went pretty well. I even found a check out line with no waiting in it. Now I am relieved to have it done and out of the way for this week.

Now I don't have to worry about dragging myself out if I'm not feeling up to it the rest of the week. My hemoglobin went a little lower, as I had suspected; not enough to require a transfusion but enough to make me feel tired. My goal this week is to take care of myself so I can be well enough to go to the cookout on Saturday.

Tired out today

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Yesterday was an ok day for me, just spent a quiet day at home. Worked on my hats while I watched a couple of movies on the Hallmark channel last night; for the week, I finished 8 baby hats and 5 adult hats. I have almost all the hats I need for my friend's team to sell at the Relay for Life in September.

I had a hard time getting up this morning, but started getting ready for church. A little while after breakfast though, my stomach started feeling kind of icky, so I decided that I better stay home. The feeling passed eventually, but I still feel very tired. Maybe all my activity from last week is catching up with me.

Hopefully, this week will be easier. I have grocery shopping to do tomorrow, then it's my long day at the clinic on Tuesday; besides chemo, I also see my doctor and get my Aredia infusion. I have to manage my "spoons" carefully this week so I can go to cookout on Saturday.

Thirteen hats in the space of one week?! That's amazing!! Congratulations on some pretty amazing productivity there, Shari! Here's to what will hopefully turn out to be a successful week of "spoon juggling" or "spoon arrangement" so that you'll feel good for the cookout on Saturday. And you remind me that I'd better get to the grocery store, too, tomorrow - ugh! Why is it that grocery shopping is such an energy depleting experience? I'm always "too pooped to pop," as my mom used to say, afterwards :) Here's to a restful week... emoticon

End of a busy week

Friday, July 27, 2012

I had lunch out today with my mom and a friend; we had a nice time. We went to the Wild Rose Cafe; a local place, nothing fancy, but the food and service are excellent.

I have had somewhere I had to go every day this week, since Sunday. Not complaining, just saying. It's more activity than I've been used too all in one week since I've been on chemo. I'm glad I had the strength to get through this week. I'm also glad that tomorrow, I can just stay home, and not have to set the alarm before I go to bed. Next week won't be so hectic. Church on Sunday, grocery shopping on Monday, chemo and oncologist appointment on Tuesday, and on Saturday, August 4th, a cook out at a friend's house.

We had more rain today, some rain and thunder this morning, and a thunderstorm that popped up around 3:30pm. Nothing severe, just a brief period of heavy rain.

Shari, you really do have a full schedule...next week included! I'm impressed continually by how much you're able to do despite some pretty demanding medical treatments - kudos! I hope all will go well on Tuesday. The day you go to the cookout, my parents would've been married 67 years. Hard to believe I'm such a geezer emoticon, although I'm "only" (ha, ha, ha) 60. Ups and downs this week

Thursday, July 26, 2012

No chemo this Tuesday, this is my "off" week, but I had to go in for lab work. Later that day, a couple of friends came over and mowed the lawn for me, and used a power washer to clean my house. I had some green crud on my siding. It looked so nice when they got done, I forgot how white my siding is when it's clean.

Yesterday wasn't such a good day. I started out feeling ok in the morning, and I went grocery shopping, but my hip and knee were really hurting by the time I got home, which was a little before 10:30am. I took my pain pill, and about an hour later I felt nauseous. I think when I took it, my stomach was too empty at the time; all I had eaten up to that point was just 2 eggs for breakfast. I took my Zofran but it took a long time for it to start working.

Then in the afternoon, I had a sinus headache start, I'm sure it was the weather because we were suppose to have a cold front coming through. It ended up turning into a migraine. I took my Imitrex and it eventually worked on the headache, but I was feeling tired and shaky, so I didn't do much the rest of the day. I laid down for a nap around 4:45pm. I didn't really sleep, but just resting helped. I got up at 7pm and was able to eat a little bit. I spent the rest of evening reading and watching tv. I did notice when I checked my barometer in the evening it had gone down since the afternoon, so it's no wonder the weather triggered a headache. My sciatic pain got worse in the evening too.

It was quiet outside until 11pm, then all of the sudden, the wind started, and I heard something hit the roof; it startled me and I nearly jumped out of my chair. I went to bed after that, but didn't go to sleep right away; I sat in bed reading, with the kitties on the bed with me, and kept the tv on to keep an eye on the weather. We had some heavy rain and some loud booms of thunder. I ended up having to take a sleeping pill, and I think it was close to 1am when I went to sleep.

I went outside right after feeding Timmy and Kallie this morning and checked the roof. There was a tree limb on it, but not a big enough one to cause any damage. I had about 7/10th's of an inch in my rain gauge.

This morning, most of my pain was in my ribs on my left side. I had to wait to take my pain pill though, I had to get Timmy to the vet before 10am for his geriatric exam. It's a special exam my vet does on pets 7 years or older, besides a physical exam he does lab work too. I dropped him off at 9:45am and was told I could pick him up at noon. It seemed like a long wait, I was still tired out from yesterday and it was hard to keep my mind off my side hurting. And even though Timmy showed no signs of illness, it's hard not to worry that something would be found on the lab work. But finally the time came to go pick him up. I didn't have to wait long after I got there. He did great! Everything was in the normal range and his weight is good. I was so glad to get him back home, and glad that I could finally take my pain pill. Feeling better now than I did this morning. Even got my laundry done.

Hey Shari, Your friends are wonderful, so good of them to help you out! Glad to hear Timmy did so well on his geriatric exam!! My cat Molly, will be 17 next month. We found out she has kidney disease last fall, she has special canned food now. She is doing fine so far, her last blood test showed some improvement. I know how you felt waiting to find out about Timmy's exam results. We love our kitties so much, we want to keep them healthy and happy! :) I am sorry you have had pain & nausea Shari. And, I know how painful headaches can be. Glad you are feeling a bit better this afternoon. Hope you have a nice evening my friend.

    emoticon emoticonGood Thursday afternoon, Shari!

So glad to hear this week brings you a break from chemo, with just the blood test to have. What wonderful friends you have, mowing the lawn and cleaning off your siding for you! Friends are that are rare treasures, but I'm sure they'd say the same of you :)

Between the sinus headache, pain and nausea, you still managed a lot. Grocery shopping can be exhausting, can't it? Many don't realize how much that demands of a person and their body when they're not feeling well :( Vet trips, too, are very tiring, but what great news that Timmy, at his age, got such a clean-as-a-whistle bill of health! After everything else - plus the tree limb - that must have been such a happy, welcome relief; it came through in your words :) Pets are family members, after all... I remember our dogs that way. We had four old trees cut down because they were close to the house and not meant to grow large or very old (Bradford pears; they don't produce fruit and get very rangy and brittle with age). It looks very sad and too sunny here now, but we'll be planting some crepe myrtles and a nice little maple soon. First, we have to get the outside of our house re-done next week (shudder)... It's always something, isn't it? Feel better... emoticon
