Not much sleep last night; I always have a hard time sleeping after a chemo. Had to take a pain pill this morning too, so that's made me a bit sleepy all day.

I was going to finish up the cat shelter today; I had borrowed caulk from my dad, and a caulk gun, but I could not get the caulk out. I don't know if the caulk was too old and hard, or if I just don't have enough strength in my arms for the caulk gun. I needed the caulk to fill in the gaps in between the pieces of styrofoam I put in for insulation. I will get some caulk next time I am in the store, the kind that comes in a tube that you can squeeze out and not have to use a caulk gun.

I got a few more Christmas cards addressed this afternoon too.

We went from being under tornado watches, to being under a winter weather advisory which starts at 6pm tonight. I'm sure the storm system moving though is what made my pain worse today. We are supposed to snow that will change over to rain.

A big change in the weather; winter is here

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Gotta love the 4 seasons of Michigan, sometimes we even get to experience them all in one day, lol! Yesterday morning, when I opened my door to pick my newspaper up off my porch, it was warm and balmy, for November anyway; 50°F at that time. It got up to 60°F yesterday. This morning, it was only 30°F. Yesterday, at different times, we had fog, rain, sunshine, thundershowers, and we were even under a tornado watch for a few hours last night. It started getting windy in the evening yesterday, but stayed warm until the wee hours, when the cold front went through and the temperatures dropped sharply. It's very windy today. We've even had some snow in the air.

I looked out around lunch time and Neighbor Cat was out on my porch, it just broke my heart! I wish I had her house finished, but I just glued in the last piece of styrofoam this morning for the insulation, then tomorrow I have to caulk in a few spots where there are gaps between the pieces of styrofoam. I am hoping I can put it outside on Thursday; but maybe if the caulk dries fast enough, I can put it out tomorrow.

My chemo wasn't until 3:30pm, so I was able get some laundry done today. Had to take a pain pill, which made me sleepy, but overall it wasn't a bad day. I kept busy enough so that the day went by fast. I'm also feeling sleepy from the nausea meds I get with the chemo, so I am going to get into pajamas and relax for the rest of the night.

Gastric emptying study today

Monday, November 22, 2010

I went to bed a little after 8pm last night. It was still hard to get up at 6am, and I hit the snooze alarm a couple of times, but I was able to get ready without having to rush. Since I could not eat or drink anything before the test, that saved a little bit of time. My mom picked me up a little after 7am and we were on our way to the hospital, about an hours drive.

The gastric emptying study started a little before 9am. I had a breakfast of egg whites, (which contained the radioactive stuff for the pictures) on an English muffin; it was plain, but I was given salt and pepper to add to it. At that point I was so hungry, I was glad to eat anything! Also had a cup of water. Then I went into a room that had a couple of chairs; my mom came in there too. I had to climb up on the table and lay down and the machine took the first picture. Then every 15 minutes, got back up on the table for another picture for about a couple of hours. The reason for the radioactive food is so that they can track how slow or fast the food moves through the stomach.

I had my book with me so the time went pretty quickly. I had a headache which started before we even got to the hospital, probably from not eating, but after the test I took an Excedrin and thankfully got rid of it.

We were talking with the tech who was doing the tests; he use to live in my hometown, and his family still lives here, so were talking about the town and people that we knew.

We had a nice warm day for traveling; even at 7am it was 50°F, and it got up into the low 60's today. When we left the hospital, it was raining, and by the time we got back on the freeway it raining hard and there was some thunder and lightning.

We stopped about halfway home and had lunch at a Big Boy; by then, it was starting to clear up, and by the time we got home, the sun was shining.

I felt pretty good today, not as tired as I thought I would be, and my pain level was lower today also. Normally sitting in a car for so long aggravates my sciatica, but it didn't bother much today. My shoulder didn't start hurting til late in the day.

We got back home around 1pm. Since it was so nice and warm outside, and I was having a day when I was feeling good, I went out and got all my bird feeders filled up.

My MRI is scheduled for Friday. Unless my doctors find something else they need to check, that is the last test I have scheduled for now except for the lab work I have done every week for my oncologist.

It started raining again about an hour ago, and we have snow coming for tomorrow, so I expect my aches and pains will probably be getting worse again while the weather changes.

    Hi,
I know exactly what you're going through. I had my gastric emptying study last week and got my results of being positive for gastroparesis yesterday.
Typical reccomendation is a low fiber diet- but I have a complication of also just being diagnosed with IBS-C (which is a high fiber diet) and at the same time diagnosed w/ Crohn's disease. I have a colonoscopy Monday to see the extent of Crohn's and then hopefully some sort of plan for what I can do for treatment.
Out of all of it, right now the gastroparesis seems to be the worst- for the last 3 days (off & on since August steady / off & on over the last 8 years) my stomach has been bloated up 7"....

Praying for the best of results for you & if you ever need anyone to talk to who knows what you're going through, email me anytime.

Lots of love & hugs (and prayers) to you!
Amy

    Hi Shari,

I'm glad that today went okay, now hopefully the results are good, and the same goes for your MRI. It would also have been a relief not to have as much pain for a change. Take good care of yourself tomorrow with the colder weather - I am sure the birds will all be thanking you for filling up their feeders - you are a real treasure!

Hugs, Nattacia

Another sleepy Sunday

Sunday, November 21, 2010

I had a hard time sleeping last night; I was sleepy enough, just one of those night I could not "turn off my brain" and keep from thinking about things. When I did sleep, I had some very strange dreams.

I didn't get up as early as I had planned, but still early for a Sunday, a little before 8am. I didn't really feel like shopping, but I had to get my groceries today; it was the only day of the week that would work out for that. I did have my dad drive me though, since I was afraid of getting light headed again.

He picked up around 8:30am. I went to Menard's first. I finally got the styrofoam I needed to finish the shelter for Neighbor Cat. I also bought a couple of Christmas gifts while I was there. I went to Meijer for my groceries and also picked up a few more little gifts in there. It was still fairly quiet in the store then, and even though there were not many checkouts open, I only had to wait behind one person in line, and they were almost done when I got there. I was glad when I came home to have my dad's help carrying everything inside.

I thought I was going to finish the cat shelter today, but I found I had to use clamps and weights on the styrofoam to get the glue to stick to the plastic tote, so I can only do one side at a time, and wait til the glue is dry before I can put the next piece in. It's not hard to do, just time consuming. I am using my dumb bells for weight to hold the styrofoam down; since I can't work out with them because of the shoulder pain right now, it's good to know they are useful for something, lol! I have been taking pictures of my project as I go along, and when I get it done, I will share them in a blog.

Not feeling the greatest today; I'm sure mostly due to not enough sleep. My neck and shoulder are achy today, and the weather is making me feel headachy. My stomach feels "acidy" too, even though I am taking my meds for it. I also got a little nauseous so I took my Compezine. It's making me feel sleepy, but it's working on the nausea.

It will be an early bedtime for me tonight; I have to be up at 6am tomorrow to get ready to go out of town to the hospital where I am getting my gastric emptying study done. It's not going to be fun trip; at least an hour riding in the car, and I can't eat or drink 8 hours before the test. I am also prone to car sickness so I am praying I won't feel ill on the way down.

    Hi Shari,

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope all goes well for you tomorrow, and that you will be feeling much better after the procedure is behind you. Perhaps feeling sleepy is good (gives your brain a rest hopefully, I know how annoying it can be when you can't switch your mind off when trying to sleep) - anyway, I hope you have a restful night and that the trip in the car is problem free for you.

Best wishes, Nattacia

Saturday, so far so good

Saturday, November 20, 2010

I was so tired last night; I was watching the Fashion Police on E and turned the tv off around 10:55pm; I could not even stay awake to watch the last few minutes of the program, so I did not get too see who was the best dressed and who was the worst this week, lol!
Of course, after I turned off the light and tried to relax, the hot flashes started, but eventually I did fall asleep, and got up at 8:30am this morning.

Feeling some pain in my hip, knee, arm and shoulder today, but so far have not taken a pain pill. Needed to get a few things done today and wanted to do them while I was fully awake.

I ordered some prints of some photos from Kodak.com, pictures I want to include in some of my Christmas cards.
Also added a few new songs to my MP3 player from my CDs. Updated my Caring Bridge page.
I got started on my Christmas cards also; I usually send out around 50 cards, so I start them early so I don't have to spend hours trying to get them all done in one day. I am just addressing the envelopes right now, I won't be mailing them out for at least a couple more weeks. Got 15 done so far. They aren't so bad just doing a few a day.

I also decided that because of my appointments on Monday and Tuesday, and Thanksgiving on Thursday, to get my groceries early tomorrow morning, before the stores get crowded with people shopping for their holiday dinners. I got that list ready earlier today.

This has been the most productive Saturday I have had in a few weeks. Aside from the pain issues, feeling a little bit better today than I have for awhile.
I'm not sure if the steroid injection I had for my shoulder is going to work or not; it's too early to tell right now, but I am disappointed that it is not feeling better.

    Hi Shari,

Good to hear you had a good sleep - that probably helped you get so much done - good for you! You did well to keep going without any pain medication. I try to do the same as often as possible, though some days when it is too painful to do anything I end up giving in. I have my fingers crossed for you that your shoulder improves.

Have a great day Sunday, Nattacia

I got over alot of the hot flashes because I supplemented with magnesium-just a thought-it really worked for me! Normandy emoticon
