Day 269

Friday, August 24, 2012

I jogged two miles straight today, and tried to go a little faster to compensate for less time exercising. Here's my breakdown:

0.25 mile walked
2 miles jogged (13:35, 13:16)
0.25 mile walked

Walking time was 9 minutes total, total workout time was about 36 minutes. I also stretched for six minutes afterward.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Day 268 Three straight miles jogged today!

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Wow! It feels good to post that again. I jogged three straight miles today. I kept telling myself, "Just go slow and you can do it." I've also added more walking time at the end. I think that helps my recovery. I'm not so stiff. Here's my breakdown:

0.25 mile walk
3 mile jog
0.75 mile walk

Jogging time: 3 miles in 43 minutes
Walking time: 1 mile in 18 minutes

I try also to pump my arms when I'm walking. I wanted to lift a few weights today, just biceps and triceps, but our adjustable dumb bells are stuck. I did stretch before and after. I'm also happy since I got out early today. I was up late working last night and wanted to go back to bed after the kids were off to school. I stayed up, had a cup of coffee and got moving. I always feel better about myself when I do that.

Day 267-Thanks for all the comments yesterday

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

I appreciate all the comments yesterday on my shoe question. I have gone to a running shoes. It was when I got the asics that are now wearing out. I've been thinking of trying on the kayano style to see how it compares to the cumulus style. I think I'll stick with asics for running, and maybe trying Keen for walking. Canfield's in Omaha has a lot of Keen shoes to try on.

Today I jogged for 1.5 miles in 20 minutes, and walked 0.7 mile in 13 minutes. I got out around noon, so it was already hot out there. My muscles and joints love the heat, my head, not so much. Drinking lots of water as I blog right now, actually my home made sports drink. I also stretched afterward for seven minutes.

My eating is totally back on track now. I slowly reintroduced the veggies into my diet after my GI attack a few weeks ago. Yesterday I made my "green sludge" that I drink every morning (spinach, V8, lemon juice, celery, cucumber, avocado blended up). I also have had some salads and fruits pretty regularly.

Feels good to be back on track.

WooHoo! Good to hear about the running/walking again today. I had big plans but had TV problems (digital TV problems, that is) and spent too much time on the phone with COX. Oh well! Keep up the great work.

Day 266 & What is your favorite brand/style of running/walking shoes?

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Today I set two goals for my workout: 1. To jog for 2.5 miles straight and 2. To do cardio for one hour. I met both goals. Here's what I did:

0.25 mile walk
2.5 mile jog
1.25 mile walk

My jogging pace was a 14 minute mile and my walking pace was a 17 minute mile. Both are good times. My jogging pace slows down as I add distance and my walking pace was faster, which was what I was aiming for. I also stretched afterward, another goal of mine. I still feel inflexible, but I'll make progress quickly if I stretch daily.

All this walking and jogging has pretty much worn out my shoes. It's time for me to get new walking and jogging shoes. Right now I have New Balance for my walking shoes, and Asics Gel Culumlus for my running shoes. I have trouble with foot and heel pain and these shoes seem to help.

What brand and style of running and walking shoes do my fellow Sparkers recommend? Just curious.

Awesome job on the running, Chris. It looks like you're coming right along again. I love Asics running shoes (my favorite is the Gel Kayano 18) because I get the cushioned support but you are getting great advise on going to a running store and getting an actual fitting by an expert. I plan on doing that eventually but not quite ready to fit it into my budget.

I wear New Balance and I do recommend going to a running store and getting an assessment. They can give you all kinds of invaluable information about what kind of shoes you need and if you need customized inserts for a better fit or not. My ankles used to roll easily so I got New Balance with special rollbar technology to prevent that from happening. I also used to wear out the outside of my shoes more than the inside and these shoes have helped that as well.

I wear New Balance and I like them. Although I have never been professionally fitted. I've thought about it, just never have done it.

    emoticon job!

I don't pick by brand so much. I go to a running store and get fitted. Previously I had Saucony and now I have Brooks. I have to admit I like the fit of the latter, but the custom insoles from the running store (an added expense) really make a bigger difference.

Well, I run and the best piece of advice I can give is go to a true running store. They will be able to tell you if you turn in or have a wide foot or pronate, etc.. Run outside on the sidewalk and be sure to go in the evening. This will help a lot. Expect to pay about a 100$ and replace them in 6 months. I am cheap, cheap. But you can;t replace your feet! emoticonGood luck

    Cheap! LOL!

I'm actually interested to see the replies here, because at long last I am planning to invest in some professionally-fitted shoes. I used to have good luck with Reebok Classics, but lately they just don't cut it - even brand new ones. Not sure what changed but something surely did!

Hey, look at you! Only 99 days until a full year of blogging under your belt!

Day 265 of 10 min of exercise per day

Monday, August 20, 2012

I was able to jog again today, which is my fourth jog in five days. The last two jogs have been short, one mile jogs, so I wanted to go longer today. Here's what I did:

0.25 mile walk
1 mile jog
0.5 mile walk
1 mile jog
0.25 mile walk

My total time was about 46 minutes, my jogging miles were about 14 minutes each. I decided before I started that I wanted to go slower so I could add the distance. I also didn't get out until after noon today, so it had already warmed up. It was beautiful though, and I love being outside on a sunny day like today. I also had time to stretch today, something I haven't done in months. Ooooo! I can tell I need to stretch. I've lost a lot of flexibility.

I blogged over the last couple of months about wanting to change up my plan. I've gotten so busy over that time, and had a trip to the hospital (possible gall bladder) during that time too. I've really slowed my routine down a lot. I have not jogged as much as I like, and my walks have been slow by my standards. I've gone out walking a lot with hubby or the kids, and that slows me down. Now that school has started, I've decided to get back to my basics: jogging (gradually increasing my distances and challenging my faster times on shorter jogs), walking fast during my walking intervals, stretching routinely, and I will re-introduce my weight lifting routine (also mixing that up with some of Spark people's routines). I think I'll wait another week for the weights. I want to get confident again on jogging and stretching first.

Wish me luck!

I'm so glad you are back to a good routine. I hope your body cooperates. It is so hard to have the drive and motivation and then have health problems slow you down. I am holding off on the strength trianing for now as well. I am trying to build up my jogging on the elliptical to 3.5 miles in 60 minutes and I don't want to fatigue my muscles more with strength training right now. I do want to add it back in though. I know it is important! Congratulations on keeping your streak alive through your illness and being a mother to six beautiful children! You are AMAZING! Simply INSPIRATIONAL!
