Day 134-Four mile walk at MY pace

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

I've been good at getting Hubby outside for walks the last few days, but he really does slow me down. I was happy to be able to get out on my own today for a four mile walk. I'm still adapting to the new way of eating, so I'm not back to jogging yet. I might try to get some weights in yet today. We'll see. I'm still a little "foggy."

A couple months ago, Hubby watched a movie called, "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead." He finally convinced me to watch it. It's about a man from Australia who goes on a 60 day juice fast. He spent the first 30 days in New York, then the next traveling across the United States. His "before" picture really resembles my Hubby's physique, lots of extra padding around the gut. I think he was around 300 lbs.

During this man's journey he meets a lot of different people across the country. He's looking healthier and feeling healthier as his journey goes on. One man he meets is a trucker from Iowa. The trucker eventually calls the Australian for help since he's got over 200 lbs to lose. He also does a juice fast for 60 days.

It was really interesting watching this movie and I recommend it to everyone. The trucker in the movie stayed at a place in Okoboji that we went to a few years ago on vacation. It gave us an extra connection to the movie.

Hubby got really motivated, and I feel really bad that I didn't support him at first on this quest. We're not doing a juice fast, not yet at least. The Rebooting website recommends weaning off meat and caffeine first, weaning on plant proteins. I have to admit, I'm surprised how much protein I am getting from the veggies I'm eating. I started logging things today and my fat and calories are way down, my protein is way down (I was taking in too much before as a protein dieter) and I am almost entirely off caffeine. I need to get off the caffeine for my adrenal fatigue anyway. I have been eating two hard boiled eggs with breakfast, and we're eating beans as well to boost the protein a little. Most of what we are eating is veggies and fruit. I've been making a veggie smoothie I lovingly call "Green sludge" for a couple of years now, so the concept of "drinking" my veggies is not new to me.

I'm hoping with my help, Hubby will be able to lose that extra weight, and bring his blood pressure down. I want him around for a long time.

I completely understand about the protein emphasis. When I got pregnant for the first time 13 years ago they told me that babies were made out of protein so from that time on I started to have a huge emphasis on animal proteins in my diet. I am just now slowly trying to incorporate more meatless meals into our weekly routine and convince myself that a meal without meat is still nutritious. It's hard to re-program your brain sometimes!

Congratulations on a four mile walk at YOUR pace! We went on a family bike ride on Easter Sunday and even though I really enjoy going out as a family I want to get a real workout in as well. So when we reached the four mile mark the rest of the family turned back towards the truck and I kept going for another mile AT MY PACE and then turned around and still caught up to the family when they had about 1.5 miles left to go. It felt great to really ride at my own pace and see what I was capable of, and get in a good workout too!

I look forward to hearing your progress on your new food regimen. Thanks for the plug about the movie as well. I will be looking for it.

I can't wait to hear a follow up on how everything is going for you and hubby. I, too, need to get a walk in at my pace - Ed and Daisy really slow me down.

So glad that you were able to get in a walk at your pace, and that you get a chance to go out with hubby too!! That's what I call a win/win!!

How's it going with the reduced protein? I have a really hard time with grain and sugar based carbs (fine with fruits and veggies, but even beans are difficult for me carb-wise) and find I do much better with a protein base (even if it's nut based) -- otherwise my blood sugar tanks big time!!! I'd love to hear how it's working for you, as someone who used to have more protein!

Day 133-Down a few pounds

Monday, April 09, 2012

I had to take Mary to the doctor today for her congestion, so I stepped on the scale while I was there. Hubby and I are starting a new eating plan, and I wanted to see where I was at the beginning. I've come down a couple pounds, I'm 174.

I spent a lot of my day preparing veggies and fruits. We are consuming bunches of those, and decreasing the fat and protein quite a bit. I know I've been way over doing it with both, and that's probably a big reason I've been stuck at 178 forever.

Our workout today was walking again, hubby and I. We went down to the soccer field to pick up Stevie, and planned to walk during his practice. When we got down there, it was very cold, so we headed home to bundle up. That cut into our walking time, so we only got 20 minutes in.

Congrats on the pounds!! You'll have to keep us posted on how you feel with this new way of eating. Are you tracking your food to keep an eye on macros now, or just going by your gut on how much protein/fat is more than you want to have?

Day 132-Happy Easter

Sunday, April 08, 2012

I had a very nice Easter Sunday today. It would have been perfect, if my whole family could have been there. Mary (12) woke up with a horrible sore throat and Hubby stayed home with her today. The rest of us went off to 8am Mass. After that was the Easter egg hunt at church. The kids always love that, and my older boys helped the younger kids. It was cool this morning, though. I wore sandals and my feet were freezing!

After that we headed to Hubby's sister's (Cathy) house. They have four kids that are all my kids' ages. It's great that they are all best friends. There was a big crowd there. Cathy's husband, Paul, had all his brothers and their families there too. I had a good visit with everyone. The weather was fantastic! Sunny and 70 once it warmed up. We had another egg hunt there for the smaller kids. We also sang "Happy Birthday" to my son Patrick. He turned 14 on Thursday. I was disappointed with the Angel Food cakes I bought at Sam's. We joked that they were more like Angel Pound cakes, way too dense for Angel Food cakes. Oh well, they still got eaten.

I got home and went for a two mile walk with hubby. Yes, you heard that right, hubby went two miles. We did it in 40 minutes. That's a little slower than I usually go, but it is such a beautiful evening and I really enjoyed the time with Brian.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Easter Sunday too!

What a great way to start your week. Our family decided to take a 10 mile family bike ride and I thought it was a perfect way to spend Easter. We had a great time just hanging out together doing something fun. Have a great week!

Sounds like you had a happy Easter. I hope Mary is feeling better. Ed went with me on a walk last night, also. It, also, was slower than I normally walk, even with Daisy along, but the important note was that Ed walked too. See you this weekend. Have a good week.

Day 130

Friday, April 06, 2012

Last evening I got a doozy of a migraine! Ouch!! Coincided with worst day of TOM as well. I definitely need to take some iron now. I still managed to get up this morning, a little late, but we made it in to church today. The bulletin said that service started at 12 noon, but they started the Stations of the Cross before that. I wish they had posted that time as well.

I walked today for 34 minutes, 2 miles. You'll have to forgive me if I'm incoherent, I still have some brain fog left from the migraine.

I thought I'd list the thyroid/adrenal meds I'm taking right now since I'm getting some inquiries:

Cytomel (T3 only med) 17.5 mcg three times a day (7am, 12noon, 5pm) and 5 mcg at bedtime. I expect to increase this med in the near future.
Hydrocortisone (Cortisol) 7.5 mg 7am, 5mg 12 noon, 5mg 5pm, and 2.5mg at bedtime.
Iodoral-12.5mg at 7am daily (Iodine supplement)
B100 (B complex once daily)
Vitamin C 1000mg twice a day

Those are the important ones. I also take other vitamins, but don't want to list everything.
