Day 41

Sunday, January 08, 2012

Taking a little break at work to post a quick blog. It's been a busy weekend here, but I'm making myself take breaks. I just took a long walk to the exit door to the employee parking lot (opposite side of the facility than where I work). I was good and returned to work, but I also took a short trip up the stairs. I made it up 5 flights before coming down three to where I work. I might have been able to do a little more, but was worried about getting all sweaty at work.

My official exercise for the day is 20 minutes on the elliptical. I started off slow, but was able to increase the pace to my normal.

I forgot to mention another goal I'm working on. At home, I have the tendency to ask the kids to go get things for me, especially items from the basement. We have an extra refrigerator down there, and shelves full of food from Sam's/Costco. I've made it a goal to go get things myself, thus increasing the number of stairs I do in a day. Most days it works well. The day after I jogged last week, stairs were tough, but I did them anyway to try to work out all that lactic acid in my muscles.

I'm looking forward to another great week of workouts and eating veggies!!!

I've noticed lately that I have the same habit of asking the kids to fetch things, so I've been making an effort to stop that as well... It really helps me get my steps in! Great minds think alike!

Nice way to add some activity AND get away from the desk for short periods of time.

Day 40 (and 38 and 39)

Saturday, January 07, 2012

Wow! Today is day 40 of my streak!! Here's a breakdown of my workouts the last few days:

Thursday (Day 38)- I walked a total of 2.2 miles, jogged 2 miles (times per mile 13:28, 13:10 second mile faster than first). Then I did weights, crunches, and stretching. Awesome day!!

Friday (Day 39)- I was sore from Thursday (thighs aching all day) so I swam for 30 min including various kick holding onto the kickbar and 1000 backstrokes.

Sat (Day 40)- Much better, thighs just slightly sore, the good kind of sore telling me I'm doing good workouts. Another work day so only time to swim for 30 min. Same routine as Friday.

Positives this past week:

1. I'm eating tons of veggies!!! I'm also doing great with low carb.
2. 379 fitness minutes for this week! Most days I have a little soreness, but the good kind telling me that I've worked out. Only one day (Friday) did I have some trouble moving. I wouldn't trade it though. Over 60 degrees on Thursday, no way I was staying in the house!
3. My streak is going strong, and I know I'll get my 10 in tomorrow even though I have an extremely busy day. I'll just get it in, on the elliptical, after breakfast but before church.

Thank you all my Sparkfriends for all the support!! Every little bit helps me to keep going!!

Day 37

Wednesday, January 04, 2012

Well, I've been exhausted today. I didn't sleep well. Politics always bothers me, and last night was our caucus night. I know I need to get involved, I just have to stop obsessing over it. I stayed up way too late to see the results, and that really hurt my sleep. I did get an extra nap in after everyone left for school and work. That helped a lot, so I got my workout in, a decent workout:

30 min elliptical
weights (triceps, glutes)
non crunch ab routine
stretching

It adds up to over an hour of working out. I can feel my muscles, so I know I'm progressing. I'm also eating much better now than over Christmas break. My veggie intake has sky rocketed!!

So now that the caucus is over, I'm hoping to sleep better and concentrate on my little world for a while. Have a great day!

Way to go on the workout! My eating has improved since coming home from visiting my parents. I'm even still allowing myself some chocolate and I'm well in calorie range! Keep up the great work!

I agree - politics does add to our stress. I was definitely ready for the t.v. ads to be off.

Glad you were able to get a nap in so you are more rested. Great job on the variety of exercise!!

Day 36 + Refections on 2011 and Goals for 2012

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

I continued my streak of 10 min/day of exercise. Inspired by my reports I looked at last night and the goals I'll mention in a bit, I increased my time on the elliptical to 60 total minutes (three sets of 20). I also did my weight set one (biceps, delts, quads), crunches (regular, bicycle, reverse), and stretching. I worked out for two hours today (that did include some potty breaks from all the water I was chugging).

I reviewed my fitness minutes for Dec 2010 and Dec 2011 and I was right! The 10 minute per day challenge increased my fitness minutes for the month.
Dec 2010 - 573
Dec 2011 - 1035 (that's 462 more minutes)

Happy with these numbers, I decided to look at 2010 and compare to 2011, the entire year. I think I discovered part of the reason I didn't really lose any in 2011. Although December 2011 was better than Dec 2010, the rest of the year was not.

2010 fitness minutes - 13229
2011 fitness minutes - 9546

I realize there are some factors attributing to this decrease. In 2011, I set the goal and reached the goal of transferring my pharmacy license to Iowa. That took time for paperwork and studying. I also picked up a second part time job and trained a lot in the summer. I may have also been better at charting my fitness minutes in 2010, something I've improved on in the end of 2011.

Goals for 2012:

Nutrition: I have got to get my eating in control. Low carb works best for my body, so I have to return to that and stick with it more, no matter how many cookies are in the house. This month I'm trying to focus on eating veggies.

Fitness: I'm continuing the 10 min/day of exercise challenge as long as is reasonable. I realize an illness or injury could end the streak. If that happens, I will just start the streak over again. I also would like to get 1000 fitness minutes/month, with longer routines on days I can, but still working out on days where there's not much time. Just keep moving!!

I want to get back into my size 16 clothes I bought last spring, and get down into the 160's again for my weight. I haven't weighed recently, but think I'm around 175-178. My clothes fit like I'm in that range.

Here's to a successful and fun 2012!!!

Day 35

Monday, January 02, 2012

Today I felt a lot better. I spent most of the day in the kitchen. I wanted to finally finish my Christmas cookies. There were two batches of dough in the refrigerator since before Christmas. My grand total of cookies was: 551. I managed to finish making five double batches: chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter chip, cocoa pecan kiss cookies (like a chocolate pecan sandy with a kiss in the middle and covered with powdered sugar), oatmeal scotchies, and white chocolate peppermint cookies (my favorite). Cookies are fun to bake, but they ruin my good eating.

On a positive cooking note: I made my veggie drink for the week and I also made split pea and ham soup. Both are full of fiber and veggies. To go with the soup, I made homemade artisan bread.

I continued my exercise streak by swimming for 20 minutes. I was exhausted at that point, so I couldn't do 30. Guess those cookies are having an effect on me. Tomorrow I'll get back to eating right and will continue my exercise streak. I also want to look up December 2010 and compare the exercise minutes to 2011. I think there's a big difference since I took the 10 minute per day challenge.

Let us know what the comparison ended up being! I'm exhausted just reading about baking all those cookies. I didn't do any holiday baking this year, but my downfall was the Holiday M&M's and Candy Cane Kisses (don't ask why I even buy them - I can't help it!). We can get back on track and put the holiday eating behind us. Have a great Tuesday!

I bet you did a great job this past year. It will be interesting to see the comparison.

The cookies kind of speak for themselves - I've done a good job of going with one or two and letting everyone else have at 'em. You've been doing good with staying active with your exercise so that's a big positive.

See you at work next weekend - keep SPARKING!!

I am glad the holiday season is over with. I really struggled with my eating this year. All those cookies sound SO good - it would be hard for me to resist.

Good job on increasing your exercising!
