Jogging with Stroller-Should be an exercise option

Thursday, April 28, 2011

I have five year old twins. We decided to keep them home from school one more year. Their birthday is at the end of July. Preschool was not an option for us since they turned five before the school year. It was kindergarten, or nothing. We decided to wait.

During the bad weather, this decision has no impact on my workouts. I use my elliptical and weight machine and the kids play. Now that the weather is getting better, I have to take them with me if I decide to jog in the morning or early afternoon. Today is one of those days. I pushed the stroller while walking and jogging. My routine is like this: walk 1/4 mile, jog one mile, walk 1/2 mile, jog one mile, walk 1/4 mile.

My times were good. My jogs were 13:45 and 14:00. My walks added up to 19:00. Keep in mind I live in a hilly area, although I avoid the bad hills by repeating my 1.5 mile route. My mile jogs on the track without the stroller average around 13:00 and walks around 18:00.

I think SparkPeople needs to add cardio options for walking or jogging with strollers. You can't convince me that I'm not burning more calories by pushing this extra eighty pounds. I also think they need to add back the option of slower "runs". Their slowest run is the 12 min mile. I count my miles, and it always counts my calories as walking calories. I'm jogging!!!! I'm a 42 year old, mother of six kids with sore knees and feet. My times are going to be slower than a 21 year old single person who doesn't creek when she walks. I just want "credit" for the work I'm doing. That's all I want.

Anyway, I feel the burn right now, and that's a good thing. Those hills pushing the stroller are great work for my bum. Trust me, I feel it!!!

Yes, I cannot see how pushing extra weight is not burning more calories. Hopefully this option will be made available some time soon emoticon

Sounds good to me. I think they should add dancing with preschoolers to the exercise too!

totally agree. Like me, having 2 kids in the stroller teasing each other and the weight is hard to manuver in a stright fashion. You're doing awesome. I hope the kids are good sports for you.

Just thinking about pushing two kids up hill makes my body ache. You are probably burning as many calories as someone running the same distance if not more.

I can't believe I forgot to mention, I'm down to 166!!!

Monday, April 25, 2011

Patrick, my second oldest, had another asthma flare-up. It wasn't horrible, but just bad enough I knew I had to take him to our family doctor to get some prednisone. That's the only place I step on the scale. This happened a week ago.

I stepped on...held my breath....

166!!!!

I'm solidly in the 160s!!! Not 169.2, barely below 170!

I updated my tracker, but forgot to tell everyone. It just dawned on me this morning. So join me in a collective happy dance!!!

and a cheer!!

I'm almost down to pre-twin weight (165). Granted, without surgery to remove the extra stretched skin, the shape is a little different. They were over 15 pounds total at birth. The 150s actually seem attainable in the next few months. I'm not in a hurry. I realize this takes a long time. I joined SparkPeople on 2/2/10, so this 34 pounds lost has taken a while. Life is happening right now, and I'm not working out as much as I'd like. With the exception of Easter Sunday, I've eaten really well over the last couple of months, and that has made a difference.

Thank you to all my Spark Friends who keep me going. I may not be able to keep as active on SparkPeople these days, but I do get on a couple times a week to check in. I also ALWAYS log my workouts. I love getting "credit" for them.

Patrick is doing well. He's rebounding faster these days. It was good he was on the prednisone this week. Holy Thursday mass had incense, and that set him off again. I'll have to remember that for the future and keep him in the back of church when there's incense.

Busy, busy, busy...

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Well, I'm still trying to workout and eat well. I'm succeeding most of the time. April and May are shaping up to be total chaos! I've even started crossing out dates on the calendar as they pass by so I don't confuse my days anymore.

I've got two kids in soccer which means practice four nights a week and games on Saturday. The three weeks they have away games, they are in different towns so I have to pawn one kid off to friends on the weekends I work since Brian still hasn't managed how to be two places at once. emoticon

My oldest is in track which means practice every day after school. This normally doesn't mean much, he walks home. He and my second oldest are both in the Middle School play, "The Seusafication of Romeo and Juliet." Mikey gets home from track, snarfs down dinner (which I always have to get done by 5pm) and races off to play practice. He's been so late getting home from track, I actually have to drive them down to the school.

We still have piano for three of the kids. Mikey isn't doing lessons during track, although he still practices. We got Stevie a guitar, so he's taking Mikey's lesson time for that. So he does piano with one teacher, then I have to drive him and Patrick down to the other teacher.

Add to all of this my thirty hours of work every other weekend. I was also insane enough to pick up a couple of extra shifts this month. I'll have to remember not to do that next April. We've also had dentist appointments (four have cavities!) and orthodontist appointments.

I've slacked off a little with weight training. I just can't fit it in. I have started using the track for my jogs. I drop off the one kid who has soccer practice, then take the other(s) to come watch the twins while I jog two total miles and walk one total mile. There are usually other walkers down there, not too many joggers. I manage to get in at least one weight training session a week.

So, all of this is why I'm not on Sparkpeople too much. I'm logging my fitness, not my food. I'll get login points when I'm here and may jump around quick to see how everyone is doing. I haven't weighed at the doctor's office for a while, but I'll have to make an appointment for the twins for Kindergarten and I'll jump on then. The doctor I see for my thyroid has a weak floor scale, not a doctor's scale and I don't trust it. I have no idea what's up with that.

Just wanted to post a little update. Keep Sparking everyone!!!

Whew...I'm tired just looking at all of your running emoticon It sounds like you are still finding chances to exercise and that's what counts. On days I'm short of ST I will do lunges, squats, calf raises, standing torso twists and standing crunches while cooking or laundering. I know it looks downright goofy, but it is something! Take care and spark when you can! emoticon

Too busy. I should have my hubby read this blog. I just thought of what my hubby tells me when I grip too much for needing a break. He tells me, "soon the kids will be in school and you can have time to yourself then." Your blog proves to him that he is full of bull. It's all good. It's great that your kids are active in many things. I believe that doing activities like your kids and not sitting around playing games or facebooking, will make them excell more. You, Kelly and I all have kids starting kindergarten, how fun. Hang in there. I've been focusing more on cardio and slacking on strength training, but I try to fit in little exercises like squats and leg lifts from every angle while brushing teeth or getting meals ready, or just throwing myself on a few stairs for pushups and tricep dips. You're doing awesome with the jog and walk. Soon things will slow down and then you will have to dedicate a little more time to you.

Kids say the funniest things...

Thursday, March 31, 2011

I've been really busy the last couple of weeks and haven't been on Sparkpeople much. Yesterday was another day running errands with my five-year-old twins, Sean and Bridget. I had the radio turned up, listening to the country song, "Rain is a good thing."

Bridget asks, "Why does that guy in the song like the rain?"

Quoting a line from the song, Sean answers, "Because it makes his baby frisky."

emoticon emoticon emoticon

I think I'll be changing to classical music.

Two Nights, Two Concerts

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Yet another busy week around our household. Last night, Patrick, my second oldest, had his Western Iowa Conference Middle School Honors Band concert. He plays percussion and loves the variety of instruments available to him. Hubby was able to get off work and we drove out to Audubon to see the show. I was enjoying the time with hubby so much, we missed the turn for Audubon. I forgot it was by Atlantic and made it almost to Adair. Way too many "A" towns to keep track.
emoticon

We still made it on time and the show was fantastic. It was fun to see a larger band than we normally see at our school.

Tonight, I get to travel to Treynor for Mikey's WIC Middle School Honors Choir. He's my oldest. He went last year, so I should remember the way there and I know I need to get there early. Last year's concert was so amazing, I was almost in tears at the end. Four hundred kids singing beautiful classic music and finishing with a patriotic medley. I get so tired of our elem school here in town always singing pop songs. I am really impressed with our Middle/High school music teacher. She is wonderful!

Hopefully, today, I'll find the energy and time to work out. Yesterday I was wiped out from TOM, but also had to sit around for a delivery that needed my signature. Today, I'm free until the road trip. I just need to shake this mild headache. I also need to get back to eating right. Sunday, the kids talked me into a Mexican grill we love. No, I didn't get the salad. Yesterday, Patrick found a Chinese restaurant in Atlantic, and we were celebrating his big night. I missed the salad bar which was tucked back in a corner. I NEED to be good the rest of the week. I've made progress recently, but have also had the set-back of being sick too. I want to stay in the 160's.

Have a great week everyone! Mine gets a little easier after today.

I always loved the Honor Choirs and Honor Bands. One thing that us "band teachers" would say was how this group is unique and would never play or sing together again (which is true!). I will say that those groups were the best part of teaching that I kind of miss. Enjoy tonight's concert!
