January in Iowa-And I went for a Jog!!!

Friday, January 28, 2011

What a gorgeous day here in Western Iowa! The predicted high is 42 and the sun is shining bright. I did something today I have never done before. I went for a winter jog. One of my older kids was home with a cold, so I had him babysit the twins for me. Really not a hard job for him. They play together so well and I had already made their lunches.

The roads were wet, filled with gravel on the sides, and icy in spots, so I went slowly. I also didn't want to overdo it since I've only done the elliptical lately. I was still able to jog 3 miles (with a quarter mile warmup walk, and a quarter mile cool down walk). I guess I'm still in pretty good cardio shape. It felt great being outside. This is just the boost I needed!

I never would have tried jogging, let alone jogging in the winter, if it weren't for Spark People and all my Spark Friends. Thanks everyone for helping to keep me motivated!

wish I had taken the time to try, for I'm in Eastern Nebraska. Our streets were pretty flooded with running water off the snow. I live on a hill, so I can't avoid it. LOL!
Glad it went well & U enjoyed it.

emoticon It was beautiful here too in Eastern Iowa, but I have yet to take a winter jog. I see 1-3 people jogging EVERY school morning when I drop my kindergartner off at school, and I would so love to join them. A few more years and my youngest will be in full time school, and I can give it a try myself. In the meantime, I'm sticking with indoor cardio!

Kid's say the darndest things...

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

My oldest son, 14 years old, last week said the funniest thing. We were shopping at Costco, in the canned tuna and chicken isle. He said, "Look mom, Albuquerque Tuna." I replied, "Look again, it's albacore tuna."

Maybe we need to get him new glasses.

Hit a Valley last week

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Last week was pretty frustrating to say the least. I was only able to get one workout in, and that was on Monday. Tuesday I went to the doctor. The scale there was a cheap floor scale, not what I'm used to at the doctor's office. I expected it to be high. I felt extremely bloated from PMS and constipated on top of that. December was hard. I ate way too many Christmas cookies. I didn't expect the scale to read 7 pounds higher than my last measurement. Ouch!!! That's been a blow to my motivation. The next two days I spent recovering from an upset stomach, and then I worked Friday through Sunday. Definitely a downer of a week.

It's a new week now and I have more resolve to stick with it. Frustrated, though I am, I am still plugging through. I got in a full workout yesterday, and will head downstairs after blogging to get today's workout in. I'm also going to be more careful about treats, be it popcorn or the occasional adult beverage to try to relax. I'm also making more of an effort to drink more water and less coffee. I'm hoping that some of that weight was water weight. I can see the expansion in my gut area. I bloated out in a short period of time. The timing of my doctor's appointment was the absolute worst time of the month for me to step on a scale. I realize this and that my actual weight gain is probably half of the seven.

Anyway, because of Spark People, I'm picking myself up and getting back at it. I bet these winter months are hard on a lot of people in the colder climates. I can't wait to get new running shoes and get back outside again. Until then, elliptical, here I come!!!

Ug- the dreaded 7lbs on the holidays. I got hit with it too. And I've been slow to recover. You'll get there! Just put one foot in front of the other- baby steps! I should practice what I preach! =)

I'm glad that you're feeling better!

Winter is hard, though winter activities like snow shoing, ice skating and sledding all eat lots of calories. But it's hard to walk quickly, let alone jog or run, in ice and snow--too much risk of injury. And hot cocoa is all too tempting!

I've had experences like yours, when life, health etc. disrupt my plans and for some reason I seem to put on 7 pounds over night (usually water weight--caused by inflammation, salt, or hormones--is the culprit) and it can be so discouraging! But stick with it and you'll be fine. Set backs are normal, unfortunately; what's important is that you don't give up.

good news is, the next time U go to the Dr, the loss will be even bigger!
I was sick last wk, so my exercise was lacking too. Seems like just when I get in2 the swing of things, SOMETHING ALWAYS comes up & messes with the system.
I too had a bad wk last wk, the scale was going down .5#s/day, then suddenly I popped back up 3.5#s!!! I THOUGHT I had it figured out, twice, but neither has allowed me to go back down now. More times than not, I think it's hormones!

Keep up the awesome job!
hugs

Omaha in the winter isn't an easy place to exercise if you like to do so outside. I've done mall walking in the early morning. I suppose though as a mother of SIX you can't get away in the mornings. How old are your kids? I hope that your Christmas cookies are all gone. I know you made many!

Sledding is listed as an exercise option!

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

One of my favorite things to do with the kids is go sledding. Well, with six plus inches of new snow on the ground, and decent temps yesterday, we did it. I usually drive the couple blocks to the school so we don't have to walk back up the hill to our house. The roads were horrible, so all six kids and I walked down, sleds in hand.

We had a blast!!!!!

I only regret that my husband couldn't come. Brian finally got his plantars wart worked on yesterday. It's been keeping him from doing any cardio since walking is painful. He rested his foot while we went out.

Did you know that sledding is a listed exercise on Spark People? I didn't until yesterday. I guess I burned a lot of calories while out there. I figured as much. Climbing back up the hill, through the thick snow, over and over really wore me out. I'm extra proud of myself since I also ate well too. When I needed carbs, I ate peanuts in limited amounts. I also fixed myself a healthy dinner, taco salad-no shell-lots of veggies, when everyone else had french fries and fish sticks. I was too worn out to fix everyone a healthy meal, and most of mine was a left-over, just had to fix the salad part.

Have a great week everyone!

Wow! A New Year!

Thursday, January 06, 2011

I can't believe how fast time passes. I started on Spark People almost a year ago. Last year had both ups and downs, but through it all, I am down at least 25 lbs from where I started. I don't weight myself often, and only at the doctor's office. My last visit was before all the Christmas cookies. YIKES!!

My next appointment is on the 18th. I've been extremely good this week with both eating and getting back on the exercise track. I'm still doing the elliptical and weight machine. With my bad knees, I can't take a chance falling on the ice outside (or even the sand and gravel left behind on the streets). Monday through Thursday, I've done complete workouts. I hope to squeeze in some elliptical time Friday and Saturday before work. We'll see how it goes. I haven't been sleeping well and I work ten hour shifts.

My plan for 2011:
1. Continue with low-carb eating. It works best for my metabolism. I also feel best that way.
2. Continue with the elliptical, weights, crunches and stretching until the roads improve.
3. Get new running shoes from a running store.
4. Get back to jogging 3 miles when the roads improve and I have better shoes.
5. Enter a 5k race (couldn't do that in October due to fall).
6. Try to be at 150 by my birthday in June. I will be happy with being in the 160s.
7. Keep hubby inspired to join me. He's doing great so far, but we're only in the first week of 2011.

Well, that's my plan in a nutshell. Pretty much the same as last year, but I'm still at it. Thank you Spark Friends for keeping me going!
