Well, I survived! It was my oldest daughter's second annual slumber party and it went really well. I only let her invite seven friends, so it was much more manageable than last year (14). The girls are all 10 or 11, and it was Mary's 11th birthday celebration. There was occasional drama, as is always the case with this age group, but they all remembered they were friends and everyone left happy. The funny thing is that there were two other slumber parties planned for the weekend. Another one on Friday night which didn't seem to cross over too much with the girls Mary invited, and one on Saturday night which included most of the girls from Mary's party. She had quite the weekend, and also got invited to another sleep over this next week. She's funny though. I was saying that she was so popular, meaning it in a good way. She didn't like that. My kids use "popular" as kind of a bad thing, meaning the popular kids who are so full of themselves. Mary wants me to say that she is just a good friend. That is more accurate for her. She's just a nice girl in a class full of nice girls. We are really blessed that way. She will have stability and friends for life from this class. We live in a small town, so her class is not too large, about 90 kids. I grew up in the Air Force and moved around a lot. I graduated from a class of 360.
So, last week was full of prep time for the party and cleaning the house. The basement is much cleaner now. I still have more stuff to go through, but it's much more organized. The kids even came through and helped quite a bit. All the cleaning and shopping did cut into my exercise time. I only got two sessions in last week, but I was able to keep going when I was shopping and cleaning. I did crash yesterday after mass. I'm glad Sunday is a day of rest!
Now off to get back on that elliptical!

I was able to elliptical again without pain in my knee. I'm really excited by this. I had become so obsessed with jogging, that I forgot how much easier on my joints the elliptical is.
Today I decided to try an interval type of workout:
Elliptical 16 min (there are 16 time divisions on my screen)
One round of tricep weight exercises (I have five exercises in this group)
Elliptical 16 min
Second round of tricep weights
Elliptical 18 min (to make an even 50-yes I'm a little OC)
Third round of tricep weights
10 min of stretching
Crunches alternating with twist crunches.
This routine felt great! The shorter times on the elliptical are easier to get through. The one downfall is that I have three "first five minutes" on the elliptical, the first five are always hard for me. I still find it easier than one marathon session.
During my time on the elliptical, I've come up with a master plan for cleaning and organizing the basement rec-room. It's a huge room, I think about 32 feet by 28 feet. Most of the kids toys are down there, along with a lot of junk at this point. My daughter is having a slumber party on Friday, so I have a reason to want to clean it myself. I always have to have a party to get ready for in order to clean my house. That's pretty pathetic. Anyway, I'd better go and get started. The kids have no idea the work that will be waiting for them when they come home from school. I'll turn into "Commander Mom" and bark out orders for this or that to be done, expecting the "Yes, Mom!" reply so I know they heard me.
Wish me luck!

Beep! Beep! 6:50 am rolls in way too quickly after getting to bed close to 1am. The Mondays after I put in 30 hours of work on the weekend are tough. The kitchen is a mess. The dishwasher half loaded with dirty dishes while the counter is still full of more dirty dishes. Grumble, grumble. "Mom, do you know where my shoes are?" The answer would be no, I haven't been here all weekend. Grumble, grumble.
Everyone's out the door. Maybe I can sneak a nap in while the twins play. Nope, they're fighting. Grumble, grumble. Guess I'd better get up. Maybe I can watch "Hell's Kitchen" online. Last week's episode didn't Tivo well, so we had to delete it. One computer won't pull up video, the other doesn't have sound. Grumble, grumble. How about a walk? My knee is healing, but still bothers me. I'd better do the elliptical instead. Grumble, grumble. I prefer to work out outdoors and get some sun.
You get the picture. I was in a horrible mood this morning. Then...
I got on the elliptical. Hey, my knee isn't bothering me. Maybe I can do my usual workout resistance. I'll try 30 minutes. Wow! I did it and my knee is feeling stronger. I can still tell I need to be careful with it, but I got my heart rate up for the first time in over a week! Now to the weight machine and free weights. I'll stick with upper body until the knee is better. Again, wow! I did it! I feel great! I think I'll get back on the elliptical again for 15 more minutes. WooHoo! Next, stretching, carefully of course with the knee. Oh, what the heck, let's throw in some crunches too!
Either I'm massively manic/depressive, or it's true that exercise lifts your mood. I feel great now! That was my first full workout since I fell eight days ago. I think if I stick with the elliptical for a while, my knee will get stronger, and even my sore feet will heal. So what if I can't sign up for that 5K I was planning on. We can get my daughter's slumber party done instead. This will be a great week of getting back into my workout routine. I'll be doing the workout that will get me through the winter when the streets up here aren't safe to walk or jog. I'm just starting it a little sooner than I had planned. One thing I really enjoyed about the elliptical: I didn't have to dodge all the traffic that seems to be aiming for me when I'm jogging.
Have a great week everyone! I know I will!

The swelling in my knee is coming down and I'm able to walk on it today. I've actually been able to put my weight on it all along, I just chose not to. I wanted to give it time to rest. It still looks a little swollen and bruised, so I am taking it easy. This is difficult since it looks to be a gorgeous week. No walk today, though, I promise.
I forgot to mention how wonderful our anniversary dinner was this weekend. Brian and I went to the Old Market in Omaha. I love having a 14 year-old who can babysit. We ate at Omaha Prime. All the food was wonderful, including the free dessert. They brought us bread pudding and cheesecake to celebrate. We also had fun trying to remember 16 years of anniversary dinners:
Cafe de Paris
Lo Solo Mio
La Strada 72
Dinner Cruise in San Fransisco
We're only forgetting a few, but we may have hit a couple of these restaurants more than once. It's funny, we've lasted longer than some of these places. I know Le Cafe de Paris and Old Canglia's are gone. We also remembered our dinner at Brother Sebastian's when the waitress had trouble flambeing our baked Alaska. The rum then soaked in and I got tipsy from the dessert. It was yummy!
After dinner, we walked around the Old Market. It was a beautiful night. I married a really special guy!

Disc golf with the family, sounds fun doesn't it? So began our adventure yesterday, a trip to a disc golf course. The kids were having a blast, all except Bridget, who thought it should ALWAYS be her turn. We made it through 4 or 5 "holes", when I was paying more attention to the fussing than to where I was walking. The hole I stepped in twisted my right ankle enough to throw me to the ground, full force on my left knee, which to this point was the better of my two bad knees.
There I was, on my back, looking up at my whole family and thinking, "Now what?" They managed to hoist me up. Mikey, my oldest, and hubby helped me hobble at first. Both are quite taller than me so I fired them. They were too hard on my arms. Mary and Patrick are about the same size, and just a few inches shorter than me. They worked much better as crutches to get me to the car. All the kids pulled together and have helped since last night to keep me off my feet. My knee is swollen, but I can put weight on it. I'm resting all day today and icing my knee periodically throughout the day. I guess these things happen, but I'm mom and wish it didn't happen to me. I'm the one who takes care of everyone and everything around here. I don't have time to be laid up.
So, I'm in a rest and see pattern right now. Hubby is determined to keep me eating right, which is quite a blessing. And, he's joining me in eating right. He knows he needs to get himself healthier, so he can take care of me when things like this happen. I jogged on Saturday, and walked yesterday (until I fell), so I have been active. If I get laid up for a while, hubby will help me do upper body weights at least. I just don't want to lose all the progress I've made. I'm also bummed because I may not be able to jog the 5K I wanted to. It's in less than two weeks. Good thing I've procrastinated in signing up.
I'll keep you all updated.
