Grumble, Grumble...It's Monday

Monday, October 18, 2010

Beep! Beep! 6:50 am rolls in way too quickly after getting to bed close to 1am. The Mondays after I put in 30 hours of work on the weekend are tough. The kitchen is a mess. The dishwasher half loaded with dirty dishes while the counter is still full of more dirty dishes. Grumble, grumble. "Mom, do you know where my shoes are?" The answer would be no, I haven't been here all weekend. Grumble, grumble.

Everyone's out the door. Maybe I can sneak a nap in while the twins play. Nope, they're fighting. Grumble, grumble. Guess I'd better get up. Maybe I can watch "Hell's Kitchen" online. Last week's episode didn't Tivo well, so we had to delete it. One computer won't pull up video, the other doesn't have sound. Grumble, grumble. How about a walk? My knee is healing, but still bothers me. I'd better do the elliptical instead. Grumble, grumble. I prefer to work out outdoors and get some sun.

You get the picture. I was in a horrible mood this morning. Then...

I got on the elliptical. Hey, my knee isn't bothering me. Maybe I can do my usual workout resistance. I'll try 30 minutes. Wow! I did it and my knee is feeling stronger. I can still tell I need to be careful with it, but I got my heart rate up for the first time in over a week! Now to the weight machine and free weights. I'll stick with upper body until the knee is better. Again, wow! I did it! I feel great! I think I'll get back on the elliptical again for 15 more minutes. WooHoo! Next, stretching, carefully of course with the knee. Oh, what the heck, let's throw in some crunches too!

Either I'm massively manic/depressive, or it's true that exercise lifts your mood. I feel great now! That was my first full workout since I fell eight days ago. I think if I stick with the elliptical for a while, my knee will get stronger, and even my sore feet will heal. So what if I can't sign up for that 5K I was planning on. We can get my daughter's slumber party done instead. This will be a great week of getting back into my workout routine. I'll be doing the workout that will get me through the winter when the streets up here aren't safe to walk or jog. I'm just starting it a little sooner than I had planned. One thing I really enjoyed about the elliptical: I didn't have to dodge all the traffic that seems to be aiming for me when I'm jogging.

Have a great week everyone! I know I will!

Loved this post! Exercise is really helping my moods, too - I've always read that, but now I'm experiencing it, too. I'm glad your day got better and that the knee is on the mend!

Knee Recovering

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

The swelling in my knee is coming down and I'm able to walk on it today. I've actually been able to put my weight on it all along, I just chose not to. I wanted to give it time to rest. It still looks a little swollen and bruised, so I am taking it easy. This is difficult since it looks to be a gorgeous week. No walk today, though, I promise.

I forgot to mention how wonderful our anniversary dinner was this weekend. Brian and I went to the Old Market in Omaha. I love having a 14 year-old who can babysit. We ate at Omaha Prime. All the food was wonderful, including the free dessert. They brought us bread pudding and cheesecake to celebrate. We also had fun trying to remember 16 years of anniversary dinners:

Cafe de Paris
French Cafe
Brother Sebastian's
Lo Solo Mio
Piccolo Pete's
Old Caniglia's
La Strada 72
Firebird Grille
Dinner Cruise in San Fransisco

We're only forgetting a few, but we may have hit a couple of these restaurants more than once. It's funny, we've lasted longer than some of these places. I know Le Cafe de Paris and Old Canglia's are gone. We also remembered our dinner at Brother Sebastian's when the waitress had trouble flambeing our baked Alaska. The rum then soaked in and I got tipsy from the dessert. It was yummy!

After dinner, we walked around the Old Market. It was a beautiful night. I married a really special guy!

Next time plan time to stop at Ted and Wally's for ice cream for dessert - yum! If you're going to do it, do it right! :)

Have you ever tried Flemings out on Regency Parkway? They have a great wine list and excellent steaks. I highly recommend it for a special occasion! I'm glad you had a great anniversary dinner.

Disc golf with the family, sounds fun doesn't it? So began our adventure yesterday, a trip to a disc golf course. The kids were having a blast, all except Bridget, who thought it should ALWAYS be her turn. We made it through 4 or 5 "holes", when I was paying more attention to the fussing than to where I was walking. The hole I stepped in twisted my right ankle enough to throw me to the ground, full force on my left knee, which to this point was the better of my two bad knees.

There I was, on my back, looking up at my whole family and thinking, "Now what?" They managed to hoist me up. Mikey, my oldest, and hubby helped me hobble at first. Both are quite taller than me so I fired them. They were too hard on my arms. Mary and Patrick are about the same size, and just a few inches shorter than me. They worked much better as crutches to get me to the car. All the kids pulled together and have helped since last night to keep me off my feet. My knee is swollen, but I can put weight on it. I'm resting all day today and icing my knee periodically throughout the day. I guess these things happen, but I'm mom and wish it didn't happen to me. I'm the one who takes care of everyone and everything around here. I don't have time to be laid up.

So, I'm in a rest and see pattern right now. Hubby is determined to keep me eating right, which is quite a blessing. And, he's joining me in eating right. He knows he needs to get himself healthier, so he can take care of me when things like this happen. I jogged on Saturday, and walked yesterday (until I fell), so I have been active. If I get laid up for a while, hubby will help me do upper body weights at least. I just don't want to lose all the progress I've made. I'm also bummed because I may not be able to jog the 5K I wanted to. It's in less than two weeks. Good thing I've procrastinated in signing up.

I'll keep you all updated.

Take care of yourself so that you can continue your journey. Don't push before it is time and cause more permanent damamge. Great attitude about not letting this setback get in your way. Keep going. You can do it. Hope you feel better soon. emoticon

I've made some improvements

Thursday, October 07, 2010

Last week I set out to get back on track and exercise more and eat better. I've stopped splurging and have kept my carbs in check. It was an amazing week for working out! I logged in 21.5 miles on foot, both jogging and walking. Some days I had the stroller with the twins, and my arms are really showing that!

I also did a lot of stretching, crunches and weights last week to complete my workouts. The weather has been beautiful, which makes me get outside to walk or jog. I'm doing better now at alternating jogging days with walking days to give my body a break.

This week has been going well too. I've been out everyday for a walk or a jog. Today is the first day I've had time to add the other components of my workout, stretching, crunches and weights.

My son's football team logged its second win in a row on Tuesday. Had to travel to Avoca for that one, but it was worth it! He got more playing time too, mostly defensive line. I think I got a sunburn, it was so warm that afternoon. Last year, we froze during the games. It seems to be a rule that in Iowa, all football fields are on the edge of a corn field. Always breezy, and if the temps drop just a bit, brrrr. His last game is next week and I hope they can finish the season with a win. That would put them at 3-2 and might encourage him to play freshman ball next year.

Friday marks 16 years of wedded bliss for me and my hubby. We'll probably go out Saturday to celebrate. He's still trying to figure out the restaurant. I'll have to figure out what clothes look best on me. Most are baggy now, a good problem to have. I haven't had the money or the chance to shop too much to get new ones. I'm looking forward to our date. We haven't had a night to ourselves in a while.

Midweek Update

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

This has been an absolutely gorgeous week outside! I cannot believe the beautiful weather we are having here in Western Iowa. I wish it would be like this all year, but this is Iowa, not Hawaii. I'm an Air Force brat and lived in Hawaii as a kid. I loved getting a bike for Christmas and being able to actually use it on Christmas Day.

I've gotten outside for my exercise which really boosts my moods. I jogged on Monday and Tuesday (3 mile jogs with 0.5 mile walks). I have to go out later since the sun is so late coming up. That means I'm also pushing my five-year-old twins in the stroller. Yes, my arms are getting some definition! I decided to take it easy today. I walked with the stroller at a good pace for 4.5 miles. I think I would have over heated had I jogged. Today looks like the hottest day of the week.

Hubby is really trying to get started. We went for a walk last evening. He made it a mile. I really enjoy our walks together!

More good news yesterday: My son's football team got their first win! I guess it's the first win for the eighth grade team in four years. It was exciting to watch, but I wish Mikey got more of a chance to play. He missed a tackle in the first half, and was on the sidelines the rest of the game. He had a great attitude and still cheered his team on, very loudly I might add!

So, it's been a good week. It's always busy here with football, homework, volleyball, piano, and all the kids running around. It's a good kind of busy. Well, I'd better go and do some more "mom" stuff.

I wish the weather was like this year round. I love being outside to exercise. My hubby joked when we were in Orlando for our vacation and mentioned,"if we lived here or in California, we would be fit from being outside all the time."
