Cooler weather = faster jogging

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

I was able to get up early again to get my walk/jog in today. I am so glad the weather cooled off some. I didn't know how I'd do since I haven't jogged for several days. It's hard to fit that in on my work weekend. I actually cut off a minute from my time. I'm really happy with that. Today I jogged 2 1/4 miles. Tomorrow I'll try increasing to 2.5 miles for my jogging part. I still warm up and cool down with a walk.

Work was busy and it seemed there were lots of problems all weekend. Luckily, Sunday seemed to go better than Fri and Sat. When I walked in Sunday, Willie, another pharmacist, looked at me, did a double-take, and asked, "Are you on a diet or something?"

He's the second person to ask about my weight loss. Needless-to-say, I was in a good mood the rest of the day. Yesterday, I rested. I get really tired after my work weekend, mostly from the commute, ten hour shifts, and working till 10:30 pm. I know my limits and usually take Monday off from most work and relax with the twins.

My family is still very supportive of me. Hubby and kids are helping more in the mornings before school so I can get out and jog without the stroller. I just hope with our busy schedules that I can sign up for a 5K this fall. There's one in October I have my eyes on. We'll have to see how it all works out. A couple more weeks, and I'll be up to 3 miles jogging in my neighborhood. Feels pretty good.

It is so nice when others finally notice. Keep up the good work. Still waiting for this "cold front" to inch its way to the eastern part of the state. Personally, I think it has been the summer from ####. So tired of the humidity.

C25K @ 6:15am

Thursday, August 19, 2010

I've kind of enjoyed sleeping in this summer. The kids didn't have swim team till 11:30 am. Some days they would let me sleep till 9 or 10. Of course, when I'm not up, I'm not telling them to get off the game systems, computer, or to turn off the TV. School started today for my four oldest. We decided to keep the twins home one more year. They just turned 5, and our little town doesn't allow 5 year-olds in preschool (very stupid). So this morning, I had two options. Get up early and jog at the crack of dawn by myself before the heat, or wait until after the kids go to school and jog with the twins in a stroller with the weather warming up. I chose option A. It was nice being out there as the sun came up. Even though it felt humid (my glasses fogged up repeatedly), it was cool still. The breeze was nice and I was able to jog 2 1/4 miles again. With my warm-up walk and cool-down walk, I was out there for 44 minutes, same as yesterday. Not bad for a very sleepy, achy 42 year-old mom-of-six.

With school in session now, I'm trying not to freak out. Mikey's doing football again (eighth grade) and Mary is doing volleyball again. All four older kids have piano. My work schedule gets fun too. Hubby has to come home to watch the twins when I go in. With everyone out of the house, I see the mess that was created. We definitely have the "lived-in" look going on. I'll tackle it all, one mess at a time, one room at a time. Eight people live here; there will always be some degree of "lived-in" feel to our home.

Right now, I'm enjoying the sound of the twins playing. I don't have to micro-manage the others now. They're in school with their own routines. And I'm here, happy that I followed through with my plan to get up early. I've already caught up the kitchen, started laundry, and logged my fitness & nutrition on Spark People.

Yankton, SD

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

We went on a spontaneous camping trip this weekend up to Yankton, SD. We stayed at the Chief White Crane campsite, so it was our first time camping at a state park. I loved all the space! We've only camped at KOAs and Jellystone which are both pretty squeezed in. We were very close to Yankton Lake, about 150 ft. We hauled the trailer over to the Lewis and Clark Rec. area to ride our bikes over there. I love that trail! The views are spectacular! I hope we can get into one of those campsites next time, so we can just hop on our bikes whenever we want. We did bike around our campsite and Yankton Lake, and up to Gavin's Point Dam. That ride was scenic too and we stopped at the dam observation area. I have to say that the highlight of the trip was renting a pontoon boat for a couple hours on the Lewis and Clark lake. That lake is huge and I love the beaches and cliffs. Brian let all the kids take a turn driving.

I wish we could have spent more time up there. Maybe next trip. We definitely plan on going again!

Getting closer to 5K

Thursday, August 12, 2010

For two days in a row I've jogged 2 miles, with 1/4 mile warm-up and cool-down walks for a total of 2.5 miles. I've been getting up earlier because of the heat to keep at it. This is taking some will-power on my part because I REALLY want to sleep in.

The heat is a blessing in disguise. School starts next week and I'll have to get up earlier anyway. I'm just getting used to the schedule a week ahead of time. I'm hoping as the heat goes down, my jogging distances will go up without any problem. I've switched from tracking time on C25K to tracking distance. I think I'll claim I'm at week 7 through the 2.5 mile mark. I plan to increase by 0.25 mile each week, so I'll be at week 7 for two more weeks. Then I'll be in sinc with distance increments on C25K. I still can't believe I'm jogging two miles!

Phineas and Ferb

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Last week was a little disappointing as far as exercise went. I only worked out on two days, which is better than none, but not as much as I hoped. A migraine early in the week slowed me down a bit, then it tried to come back later in the week. I also had two extra work shifts. The extra money is nice, but I feel like the house falls apart when I'm gone so much. I also lose time for exercise. On the up side, my eating has been much better. Even when I splurge a little, I haven't gone overboard.

Yesterday, I rested. I must not have slept too well. I was grumpy and felt exhausted. I laid around all day and watched TV with the kids. We watched some Phineas and Ferb. I love that show! Yes, I'm 42 and I still love cartoons. Those two characters and their friends believe that they can achieve anything; and they do it all in one summer day. We grown-ups here on Spark People need some of that self-belief. I can and I will live this healthy lifestyle and get in shape!

I guess I have some of that. I've grown to believe that I can jog a 5K. I'm working up to the first 2 miles. I jogged for 26 minutes today, which is almost 1 3/4 miles for me. Tomorrow I start week 7 of couch to 5K. I've also found a 5K to sign up for in October. This goal has been great to get my mind off the scale. I don't plan to step on one until September sometime, but I may need to do some shopping before that. My work pants look silly. I still can't believe these pants used to be tight on me. Now they almost look like clown pants. Good problem to have, isn't it?

Thank you Spark People and Spark Friends for helping me come so far and for helping me stick with it!!

Yay for clown pants!!! emoticon That is always a great problem to have! As for still liking cartoons, I'm the same way even though we haven't been watching the PBS shows since June. I love Dinosaur Train, Super Why and yes, even Sesame Street. I had a day a while ago, that I was tempted to watch it even though the boys weren't here. Sad, right?! Anyway, keep up the great work and yes, you need to go shopping. Woo Hoo!!
