Nothing to Blog about Blog

Sunday, September 26, 2010

I'm sure I could think of something worthwhile to blog about but it's Sunday afternoon after worship and lunch, I'm tired, and I don't feel like going through the effort! However, I want my three points and thus the "nothing to blog about blog."

Good one! Wish I'd've thought of that! We do seem to get addicted to those points, don't we?

Getting Close to my Goal

Saturday, September 25, 2010

This year I decided to try to get 2500 miles in on the bicycle which proved to be even more challenging then I expected. First of all, one can only ride outside in Minnesota for about 8 months (unless you're one of those crazy winter riders which I'm not), and second, I ended up having to leave the country for six weeks, four of which were right in the heart of cycling season.

So it's been challenging but I'm getting close. After my "wild ride" yesterday--21.2 miles straight into a 25-30 mph wind with gusts over 40 and then 21.2 miles with the wind at my back--my odometer is at 2237 miles, which leaves me 55 miles short of my record miles for one year and 263 miles short of my goal.

I plan to get another 50-100 miles in before the end of September and then hopefully the weather will cooperate in October and I'll be able to meet, or even exceed, my goal.

It sure feels good when we set our minds to something and accomplish it despite significant obstacles, doesn't it? I hope to experience that feeling soon!

You can do it! You are too close not to reach your goal. emoticon

Update on Yesterday, Wild Ride Today

Friday, September 24, 2010

Well, I was going to try to do a "cadence ladder" workout on the road yesterday (see yesterday's blog for details) but it was cold and raining and so I didn't do it. Rather, I set the bike up on the indoor trainer and completed the workout, along with another one, inside. As I said, this particular workout is hard to do on the road but I was really looking forward to trying. Oh well, another day!

As for today, I'm set to put in my one longer ride of the week, about 43 miles. It's an east-then-west out and back which is interesting as there's a 20+ mph west-north-west wind blowing right now. So the ride out will be very difficult, brutal in fact, but the ride back will be amazing! When there's a heavy wind like this I prefer to get the hard work over with, so the conditions are just fine with me.

Anyway, hope you all have a great day!

Cadence Ladder Workout Today

Thursday, September 23, 2010

Some cadence workouts are best done on the trainer because it's very hard to peg your cadence at a particular rpm and hold it on the road, unless you live in a particularly flat area. However, if you live in an area where the roads undulate, your cadence tends to dip or surge with every change and thus it's hard to maintain a particular number.

Having said that, I'm going to try a workout today that I've never done on the road. It's called "The Cadence Ladder" and it goes like this: After a 5 minute warm up at 80 rpm, increase cadence by 5 rpm every minute until you reach 120. Then decrease by 5 rpm every minute until you reach 85. Recover for 5 minutes at 80 rpm and then repeat.

This workout takes about 45 minutes and is designed to improve one's spinning technique and cardio-vascular endurance. I blog tomorrow, Lord willing, about how it went.

Hope you have a blessed day!

Riding my Bike to Work Today

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

My daughter recently got her driver's license and since she doesn't have her own car, she and I have been sharing. Today I've decided to let her take the car which leaves me only with my bicycle. I have never taken my bike to work before but I'm looking forward to it. It will be different as I won't be able to ride as fast as normal because I can't get all sweaty! But I suppose it is an easy way to get some miles in.

I ride my bike to work, only 3 miles one way, but add another 12 to it before I go in. Do enjoy it, just have to watch traffic espically in afternoons....have fun and God Bless

What a glorious day to bike to work! I'm off today, I am not the kind of biker you are, but I enjoy 10-15 mile rides. I will be taking on today. emoticon
