Weird Ride Today

I'm in the northern suburbs of Chicago this week for some doctoral work. I tried to get a ride in this morning and thus went to the Des Plaines River Trail only to find that its crushed lime rather than paved as a website I read said it was. Oh well, I spun around the neighborhood for about 6 miles until it occurred to me that someone might think I was stalking or something and then just went back to my room and got ready for the morning. I searched mapmyride.com to find a route in the area and, thank God, I found one so I plan to ride a bit longer tomorrow.

    enjoy! I grew up in Lincolnshire (original area) and even though a bike on 22 might not be a good idea - it's a beautiful neighborhood with a nice park and swimming pond. Not sure where you're staying but there are many pretty areas; Forest preserves galore. The one off Everett comes to mind. Have a great ride. Was just up there this past weekend.

Hangin' in Chicago area this Week

I'm in a doctoral program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School which requires me to come to the campus for four days, 2-3 times per year. This is one of those weeks. I've read 6 or 7 books and wrote a pre-course paper to prep for our time this week and then after four full days of class I'll have several months to complete a final project.

I plan to ride on a local bike trail tomorrow, don't know what it's like but we'll see how it goes!

    Hooray for you! You're in Chicago and going for a bike ride! When I go there all I want to do is EAT!! My Chicago "food roots" come raging back to life and don't you dare stand between me and a Chicago dog, and Italian Beef or a pizza. You'll lose a leg in the stampede! emoticon

Group Ride Today

After a couple of days of pushing it a bit in the saddle, I'm going to take a 35 mile ride with a group that rides a bit slower than me. This will be good for me as my legs are sore which surprises me because I've hardly been sore the whole year. Oh well, it is what it is but a nice recovery ride will help me heal right up!

Speed Day Today

Worked on developing speed today and completed the following workout:

Power Jumps: on a mostly flat course, do 3-5 sets of 5 jumps. A jump is 10-12 turns of the crank (each leg) at a high cadence. Recover for 1 minute between each effort and 5 minutes between sets.

The ride was 30 miles and I did only 3 sets as I'm still exhausted from the long string of short night's lately, but be that as it may, the ride went very well. I imagined having someone on my tail that I really wanted to lose and this helped me to find motivation and power to accelerate again and again.

This actually happened to me last year on the annual 300 mile tour I take with my wife. There was a guy from a team called "Happy Hour" who certainly enjoyed one of those the night before and was riding like a fool but I couldn't shake him--it really ticked me off. Finally, after about five miles he couldn't hang onto my wheel any longer and I dropped him. Every day after that I made a point to fly by that guy when I saw him up the road and I must admit that I enjoyed it a bit too much.

So anyway, this is the second time that I've done the "Power Jumps" exercise and both times I've imagined this guy on my tail--it helps!

Finally back on the bike today

Due to my wife leaving for India this week and a doctoral project I had to complete by this morning, I haven't been able to ride over the last couple of days. So it felt very good to be back in the saddle today. Did a quick 30 miles, nothing special, just put the miles in, but again I really enjoyed myself.
