I've belonged to several gyms in the past--Family Fitness (we used to call it "Family Fatness"), Nautilus, UC Berkeley's student/faculty gym, and the YMCA are the ones that come to mind. This time around I decided not to join a gym but rather to do my strength training at home, however, I've come to the point in my quest for fitness where I need more strength training "tools" than I now have.
As I thought through my options, I came to think that joining a gym might actually be the best option because (1) I've already built the habit of exercising 6 days per week and so I'm eager to strength train, in other words, I won't struggle with actually going to the gym, (2) at $12 per month it's actually the financially sensible decision, and (3) I really don't want to take up an entire room in my house to fit a weight training system.
So, I joined the gym last week and I've worked out there twice so far. Today I meet with the trainer for my one free session. I look forward to this because, although I've worked out with machines for many years, I've never used free weights much which is what the trainer is going to guide me through. We'll see how it goes!
