Had my first bike wreck yesterday

Friday, June 26, 2009

Yesterday I took a long bike ride. It rained early in the morning so the roads and bike paths were wet. I went through one particularly shaded part of a trail which was mossier than expected and in a heart beat--BOOM--I was down. I was only going 12 or 13 mph and the asphault was pretty smooth so it wasn't that bad. I go a little road rash but nothing severe.

Oh well, I guess after 10 years of riding it was about time for my first crash!

I rode my bike for 115.5 miles today!

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Well, my theory worked! I carb-loaded for two days, fueled well on the bike all day, and ended up riding 115.5 miles on my bike today, feeling strong the whole way.

The plan was to ride from my house in the northwest subs of Mpls to downtown Saint Paul and back. It ended up being 57.2 miles from my driveway to downtown, and then with a couple adjustments on the way back the total ride was 115.5.

It was a glorious day. Clear as a bell, a little warm but not overbearing, and little to no wind. It's so green here this time of year and there are so many picturesque lakes that I found this ride simply amazing.

And, I beat my previous record of 103.7 so I'm one happy camper this evening! Thanks to all of you who wrote to encourage me! I really appreciate your partnership.

    Congratulations! WOW! emoticon emoticon

Glad to hear that the weather was only warm--it was 95 here yesterday, and while I was riding my indoor bike (in the air conditioning), I thought of you in the MN heat. But it wasn't so hot after all--GREAT!

We've been keeping track of your 100+ bike ride over on the "Biking Challenge--June" message board.

Have a great day and take great joy in your accomplishment!

Eat Well Today, Ride Strong Tomorrow

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Tomorrow I plan to ride my bike for 110 miles, about 6 miles farther than I've ever gone on a bike. I've been riding for a decade now, but I must admit that I'm a bit intimidated by this distance as I've only ever eclipsed the 100 mile mark once before. But mostly, I'm excited to attempt something unusual and challenging for me.

Today, in order to get my body ready I plan to continue carb-loading. I'll eat to the top of my allotted cals for the day, eating well but eating lots of carbs. Hopefully this will serve me well tomorrow as my body will have plenty of quick burning fuel to burn, keeping me strong all the way to the end.

And as for eating tomorrow, I eat and drink every 15 minutes on the bike so that I consume 16 oz of gatorade (my preferred sports drink) and 1 energy bar (usually a Clif bar) per hour. I will also stop for lunch which will include plenty of carbs, but generally healthy.

So bottom line: I hope that eating well today will prepare me to ride strong tomorrow because I don't just want to finish--I want to finish strong!

We'll See if Carb Loading is a Good Idea!

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

This Thursday I plan to ride my bike for 110 miles--a record for me. To prepare my body for this, I ate lots of carbs today and plan to do so tomorrow as well. I'm not eating junk, just lots of carbs which also put my cals today at the max. The idea here is that the body needs to store carbs to use as fuel for long rides, so I'm trying to give it what it needs.

One way or the other, 110 miles is a long way to ride and I'm going to be very tired. But I'm hoping that I won't "bonk," which is a cyclists way of saying "totally run out of gas to the point where you literally can't push the pedals anymore" ("bonk" is a much more efficient way of saying this). I would love not just to finish, but to finish strong.

We shall see!

Getting Ready to Ride for 110 Miles

Monday, June 22, 2009

This Thursday I plan to take a day off of work and ride my bike for 110 miles. The farthest I've ever gone in one day is 104 miles, and I want to break my record. So I'm resting today and going to begin "carb loading" tomorrow because our bodies need lots of carbs in order to endure such a grueling feat.

I'm excited, I'm slightly intimidated!
