Riding in the Rain

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

I just put everything together so that I can go for my daily bike ride. It's been threatening to rain all day but hasn't. And--you guessed--now that I'm 5 minutes from taking off it's starting to rain. Oh well, I'm a Baptist, so what do I care!

So I guess I'm off for my "baptism"!

I Think I Have to Exercise More

Monday, June 15, 2009

I've been stalled in my weight loss for the last couple of weeks.

Last January I weighed 242 lbs and realized that something had to happen. My dad died of his second heart attack at 51 years old, just 9 years older than I am now, and I did not want to follow in his foot steps. So I began riding my bike again (on the indoor trainer) and xc skiing. My intensity level was pretty low but at least I was doing something! In addition, I told myself, "Eat whatever you want but just make sure to get your fruits and veggies each day." In this way I lost 7 lbs between mid-January and mid-March.

I did start noticing a difference in my overall feeling of health, but I was still sluggish and I knew what I was doing was not enough for the long-term so through a variety of circumstances I decided to get more serious about my weight loss, and more importantly, about my health gain.

I shared this with my wife who then introduced me to SP. I decided that I would submit myself to SP totally and do everything they told me to do, even if I thought it was stupid or not for me. I decided to approach this as though I did not know anything, even if I did in fact know some things. And it has worked!

Since March 21, 2009, I have lost another 17 lbs, my fitness level has increased drastically (for instance, I've never ridden my bike as fast as I'm riding right now), and overall I feel healthy. But as I said in my opening sentence, I've been stuck in the high 210s for the last couple of weeks and I'm not sure what to do.

So, I read several SP articles this morning and it seems to me that the only thing I can do is bump up and mix up my exercise program. I'm not sure exactly what that's going to look like, as I haven't had much time to think about it, but I do think I'll give that a try.

Any ideas? Any words of advice?

Ah Yes, a Day Off

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Last week was insane--I worked 15+ hours per day for seven straight days! And boy am I tired! So tomorrow is my one day off each week and am I ever glad it's here. I'm laying down even now at 7:00 p.m. and I probably won't get out of bed, except when I must, for the next 36 hours! Thanks be to God.

Motivational Quote of the Day

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Today on the SP front page, Sir James M. Barrie is quoted as asking, "Shall we make a new rule of life from tonight: always try to be a little kinder than necessary?"

In a word, "Yes!"

Whew--I'm Finally Done

Friday, June 12, 2009

I've been working on a project for my doctoral degree this week which was due today--in fact, if I didn't get it in I would have flunked my current course. I way underestimated the work I had to do for the project and thus have put in about 50 hours this week to get it done. It had to be post-marked "June 12" or earlier and so there I was at the local USPS at...4:30! After so many hours of work I literally made the deadline by only 30 minutes. That was way too close for comfort!
