Pushing a Power Mower

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Well I took the brave step of pushing the power mower UPhill today. It was actually a pretty cool workout and made mowing the lawn more fruitful for my overall health plan. Hmmm, what shall I try next, adding weight to the mower?

Exercise Helps me to "Digest" Ideas

Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Today I've been researching a paper for a doctoral course which I then have to outline this evening. But the problem I'm having is that my brain is on "overload" and I can't think straight. My brain is full of substance but so full that I can hardly move, so to speak.

So I thought, "Why don't I go for a ride and see if that will help clear my mind," which caused me to think: "Hey, exercise is actually a means by which my brain digests information and then disseminates it to wherever it goes so that I can think straight again." I don't know, I may just be so tired that I'm delusional but this makes sense to me!

So, I'm going for a ride!

Learning to Eat Slowly

Monday, June 08, 2009

I read an interesting article in Healthy Lifestyle => Nutrition today about the benefits of eating slowly. I was surprised to see how much is really involved in this simple habit and I did feel encouraged, even excited, about slowing down a little, smelling the roses, and enjoying all the benefits thereof. The suggestion at the end of the article to give 20-30 minutes to eating each meal, plus prep, is idealistic and will never happen for me, but the point is still well taken: some things are worth spending time on and eating well, and slowly, is one of them!

What do you think?

Think Soberly, not Highly, of Self

Sunday, June 07, 2009

On today's front page SP has the following quote: "Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your own estimate." I do understand the general logic of this quote but there's a more important referent to which we ought to compare ourselves and to which, one day, we will answer for our lives--Almighty God.

Thus, I will stick with his advice to my soul: "For by the grace given to me [the Apostle Paul] I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned" (Rom 12:3).

"Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1Pe 5:5-7).
