Happy New Year--Finally Have Snow in Minneapolis!

Sunday, January 01, 2012

It came at the 11th hour, that's for sure. Last night it finally snowed in the Minneapolis area and though the storm wasn't massive it did dump a couple of inches. It's SO good to see the snow!

Hope you all are having a happy new year!

We only saw blowing snow. It didn't accumulate here in SE MN. I think we had more rain than snow. I'm ok with that.

So looks like I'll be coming home to some snow later this week, unless the temp does a rebound. Happy new year.

I Set an Unbeatable Record Today

Saturday, December 31, 2011

As I mentioned a couple days ago, I track lots of things with regard to cycling. One of those things is the latest ride of the year, which in the southern states would be a stupid thing to track since it's warm but which in the northern states has been fun to track since it gets so cold and snowy and icy.

But this year has been flat weird: no snow, no ice, and relatively warm temps all of which adds up to a road bike ride on December 31, 2011! It was about 38 degrees so it was a bit nippy at first but soon I warmed up and rode pretty well.

So much for that record! Well, we'll see how the weather goes tomorrow, who knows, I may end up setting another unbeatable record then as well--the earliest ride of the year!

Hope you have a great day!

Finding my Rhythm Again

Friday, December 30, 2011

Rhythm in life means a lot to me, and when it gets disrupted I struggle. Over the last few months my rhythm of exercise has been disrupted by various circumstances and though the wheels haven't come off the bus has certainly slowed down! I want it to speed back up.

Next week the new year begins which also means the end of a very busy season for me, as I'm a Pastor. I love this season, oh the Lord knows how much I love this season, but it does present challenges as far as keeping the diet and exercise life in line. I have put on a few winter pounds but now that things will return to a more normal rhythm I'll take those off in no time. I always do.

So, as it has been in past years, the basic plan is to do cardio six days per week and strength training three days per week. I'll write more about the details in the coming days.

For now, God bless you, hope you have a great day!

Hanging in there and keeping persistent is always the answer.

Good on you for staying true to yourself and staying on Spark.

I understand totally. With not being able to run and ending my gym membership, I've slowed down considerably. It's time to kick it into gear and up the ante. I'm looking forward to a good 2012! Good luck!

Took the Road Bike for a Spin Today--In Minnesota!

Thursday, December 29, 2011

Hard to believe, but I was able to ride outside today, on a road bike, in Minnesota. I keep track of all kinds of things with regard to my cycling one of which is the latest date I was able to ride outside. Well, this year I think I'll set a record that will never be beaten for it's slated to be over 40 degrees on December 31! No snow, high temps--am I really living in Minnesota?

I will say that it's sure hard to produce speed and sustain it in 35 degree temps. The legs just can't seem to warm up and stay warm enough to produce the kind of power necessary. But compared to my first ride outside last year, which was in mid-February during a particularly warm week, I averaged 0.4 mph faster so I don't feel too bad about it. Just used to going quite a bit faster so it was frustrating to literally be unable to do so.

Well, the cycling season officially begins for me this Sunday when I commence my training plan leading to my main cycling event every year: The Ride Across Minnesota which takes place the last full week of July. I'm excited and can't wait to get back out on the road Saturday and see if I can beat my time from today!

Hope you have a good day.

I had no idea such a ride existed - I'll have to look that up!

So far, I have not braved a Minnesota winter riding my bike - this year I am solely dedicated to Cyclequest spinning in Eden Prairie until the Ironman Bike Ride in April.

Great - glad you were able to get it in. With that temp it still takes real motivation

That is amazing! I can't imagine such balmy winter weather right now.

I have read that the "states" are all having a very warm, snow free winter. That must be because all the snow is falling here before the weather heads south!
We have 40+inches of snow on the ground and 6 degree temperatures today... to cold for me to go outdoors and ride anything!

Enjoy your non-winter and your road bike rides while it lasts. emoticon

Our Daughter was Accepted at the University of Minnesota!

Saturday, December 17, 2011

My wife and i are so proud of our baby--well, she's a big baby now! Earlier today we received the letter of notification that she has been accepted at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. For the moment, she's in the Liberal Arts program but will soon explore more specific possibilities.

Many of you have already been where I'm at but this is my first, and last, time and I'm SO proud! And more so, I'm thankful to the Lord Jesus who's been so gracious to us over the years and provided for us in many ways and endowed our child with a passion for learning and an ability to do so.

Glory to God and...YEAH!
