Busyness--The Bane of my Exercise Plans!

I was scheduled to workout today, full body deal I wrote about a couple days ago, but I went to work at 7:30 a.m. and got home at 8:30 p.m. I would love to make up for it tomorrow but again my day starts early--even earlier in fact--and ends late--even later in fact.

Oh well, I suppose the trick is to never give up even though circumstances sometimes make it hard to follow through with our plans.

    I have no doubt you will get it figured out. My husband thinks I am insane. I go to bed at 8:30, get up to go to the gym at 4:30, work from seven fifteen to 6pm...and repeat. Nasty weather drives me nuts and all my riding has been at the gym for the past two weeks. emoticon emoticon

My Favorite Breakfast

I try to vary my meals a bit from day to day so that I don't get bored of certain things but I must admit that I am flat out addicted to my homemade breakfast burrito. Even writing the words is making my mouth water! Here are the details:

In a pan over medium heat, I cook...
1-2 cups of spinach
Bell peppers
1 oz of Velveeta cheese
Pace Hot Salsa
1 egg

I actually cook the egg separately because I think it tastes better that way, and when everything's done I pour it over a 110 calorie MIssion flour tortilla and enjoy! Top it all off with one cup of fat free milk and you have an amazingly tasty and healthy breakfast for under 400 cals! Oh, it's SO yummy, I can't wait to go make one now!

    I stick with a bowl of Cheerios M-F in order to get out the door on time. Weekends, oh yeah, I'm so making breakfast and I'm with you, breakfast burritos are amazing. Mine are very close, I skip the cheese and I'll have to try adding spinach (one of my favorites). I'll chop and throw in leftover veggies with the fresh onions, red peppers and sliced cherry tomatoes, maybe some shredded chicken breast, whatever's in the fridge. That's the beauty of a burrito, you can add just about anything.

My Full Body Workout Regimen

At this time of year I do a full body workout three times per week, as well as cardio-only three other times per week. The idea is to prepare my body for the rigors of more specific and intense training a little later in the year (my "year" goes from Sept to Aug). The basic idea of this workout is that I do cardio followed by a strength training circuit during which I move quickly from one exercise to another in order to keep my heart rate up. Then I finish it off with another round of cardio, and go home to give my body some recovery fuel!

So with that, here's what I do for a couple of months, the particulars of which are determined, in part, by what's available at my gym. I do complete the exercises in this particular order.

Elliptical Machine 30 minutes

Incline bench sit ups (15 reps)
Reverse forearm curls (15 reps)
Forearm curls (15 reps)
Shoulder shrugs (15 reps)
Side bends (15 reps)
Crunch machine (15 reps)
Preacher curl (15 reps)
Tricep dips (15 reps)
Pull ups on machine with help! (15 reps)
Back extension machine (15 reps)
Tricep extension (15 reps)
Leg curl (15 reps)
Leg extension (15 reps)
Hip adduction (15 reps)
Hip abduction (15 reps)
Leg press (15 reps)
Calf extension (15 reps)
Fly machine (15 reps)
Reverse fly machine (15 reps)
Overhead press (15 reps)
Chest press (15 reps)
Row machine (15 reps)
Lat pulls (15 reps)
Free back extensions (15 reps)
Free side extensions (15 reps)
Free hanging reverse crunches (15 reps)
Lunges (15 reps)
Squats (15 reps)
Step ups (15 reps)
Plank (30-60 seconds)

Treadmill 30 minutes

And that's that! This workout takes me 1.5 hours, I do it three times per week, and over time it has a great effect on my body. Give it a try for a few weeks and see how it works for you.

Good Work Out Yesterday and Today

Over the last few weeks I've been re-establishing my workout routine and so yesterday I did 30 minutes of cardio followed by a 45 minute circuit strength training workout. It felt great. I lifted more weight than I did at this time last year which was very encouraging as I ended up getting in the best shape in the last 20 years, so the initial signs are encouraging right now. Then today it was back for more cardio, and If I have some time this evening I'll do another 30 minutes or so. It feels so good to be back on track!
