Back from Vacation

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

After two weeks of vacation, I'm back in the saddle and plan to blog soon about (1) The Tour of France, (2) my 300 mile bike ride, (3) my week in the woods with my wife, and (4) my plan for the late summer and fall. Good to be back, look forward to interacting with you all soon!

Excellent Test Ride Today--NO PAIN in the Achilles!

Thursday, July 21, 2011

The achilles has been getting better day by day so I decided to take a fairly intense ride today to see how it felt at full speed. I did hold back on the climbs because I didn't want to overstress is, and a few times when I could have put the hammer down on the flats I chose to keep my cadence around 105 instead. I really felt good out there and came in at an average speed of 18.7 mph. I still feel a bit nervous about going at 100% on the TRAM next week but I think if I ride as I did today--higher cadence, lower torque--I should be able to ride at 90% or so.

I feel so grateful to the Lord for this. I enjoy going fast but that's not the big thing to me. The big thing to me is just getting to be on the roads of Minnesota in the only hilly part of the state, enjoying the Lord and his creation and my TRAM family.

So here we go! Lord willing, I'll have a rest day tomorrow, a mellow ride Saturday, a rest and travel day Sunday, and then hit the roads of SE Minnesota on Monday! Can't wait!

Thanks so much for all of your support, advice, and encouragement. I've learned some things from this experience which I hope to share in a few weeks if I remember to write it down!

Hope you have a great day!

You're a rock. That's a very fast recovery. I think that someone up above is watching over you.

Went to the Twins Game Today--They Lost & I Lost Weight!

Monday, July 18, 2011

A friend of mine invited me to the Twins game today. They played Cleveland, it was a make up game, and by the third inning it was over. Cleveland went up 4 - 0 and it stayed that way until the ninth when Cleveland added another run and we got two for a 5 - 2 final.

The game was really boring but it was nice to see the new stadium. But much worse than the game was the heat! It was nearly 100 degrees, fairly humid, and our seats were right in the sun. We actually had to go up and find empty seats in the shade because it was too much for us, and yet I still sweat so much that my shirt looked like I had jumped in a lake! So they lost, it was hot, but I lost pounds of water weight!

It really was fun seeing the new stadium and I'm glad I went, but I must admit that I'm glad to be inside as well. Hope you have a great rest of the day!

I was more impressed with Target Field than I thought I would be. I do love the Twins and baseball in general, but yesterday it would've been tough to take the heat. When I went, a group of us got together and rented one of the "event suites". It was a fun thing to do (you can either be inside with heat/air conditioning, or sit in the outdoor seats. However, there was something missing, not having the vendors hawking their foods/beverages in the area - loses a bit of the baseball atmosphere. It was fun to try once and probably worth the extra money, but next time I go I want to sit in the "cheap seats" -- that's just more American! :)

Sounds like a good, but hot time.

Took Two More 10 Mile Rides, Achilles Still Feels Good

Saturday, July 16, 2011

Though it's still hard to walk normally, I have taken two rides of about 11 miles each and my achilles has given me little to no problems. The only things I can't do is stand up and sprint or push hard on the pedals. Well, I can and it actually doesn't hurt that bad but I know that if I do that I'll reignite the injury and I don't want to do that.

So I'm going to continue with the ibuprofen, icing, resting as much as possible, and brief, mellow rides that warm up and stretch the achilles without straining it. I think in this way I might just have a chance to ride normally the week after next.

Thanks again for all your support, my SP friends!

Glad things are working out for you. You've made a wise decision to take it easy and let your body heal. Hope your really long ride in a couple of weeks goes well.

Took a Very Brief Ride Yesterday--Achilles Felt Good on the Bike

Friday, July 15, 2011

My achilles keeps getting better day by day, although much more slowly than I'd like! So I thought I'd take a very brief test ride yesterday, only 1 mile, just to see how it feels and I had no pain whatsoever. It hurts when I walk but not when I ride. Now, I didn't push the pace, climb, or sprint so I'm sure I could make it hurt on the bike, but yesterday showed me that if nothing else I can ride the TRAM at a very slow pace and still enjoy the ride even if I can't go fast.

So I feel very grateful to the Lord for this and I'm going to continue doing all I can to heal this thing up!

Hope you have a great day!

Taking it easy and letting it heal, very wise.
